===============================================================================[3] INTRODUCTION [S003]===============================================================================Pokemon is a franchise that has spanned several 'generations', currently upto

four. The whole franchise started with the Red and Green versions in Japanback

    6/351

in 1996 and since then the game has evolved into a franchise that spansmanydifferent features including games, toys, an anime, trading cards and afairbit more.

In 1998, Red & Green were released as Red & Blue in the United States, whichfeatured graphics from Japan's own Pokemon Blue which was a game similar toRed and Green but with extra features such as Jynx in Seafoam Islands andDittoin Rock Tunnel. The anime had actually been aired in the US beforehand butthegames quickly became a huge hit. The same happened in Europe with thePokemongames' release in 1999, ten years ago from now. Later on, a third versionwasreleased to compliment Red and Blue, specifically Pokemon Yellow. Therelease

of a third version with additional features came to be a reoccuring trendinthe franchise. Yellow brought some new ideas to the table and is the onlygameto date to have a Pokemon following a trainer within the game (specificallyPikachu.) Pokemon Yellow also changed Wild Pokemon, gave Gym Leaders newteamsand even added a surfing Pikachu minigame. Spin-off titles were alsoreleasedto compliment these games, including Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Stadium ontheNintendo 64 and Pokemon Pinball on the Gameboy Colour.

Come late 1999 for Japan and late 2000 for the United States and probablyearly2001 for Europe, Pokemon Gold and Silver were released. These started the2ndgeneration of Pokemon, adding 100 new Pokemon. Some were actuallyevolutions ofthose who had lived in the Kanto region where the first generation was set, such as Kingdra and Blissey but the majority were entirely new species.Thissecond generation was received very well, also receiving spin-off titlessuchas Pokemon Stadium 2. The third game in the series turned out to be PokemonCrystal, which focused on Suicune as a main legendary. It was also uniqueinthat it was the first Pokemon game to allow the player to be a female - inallof the other games previously you had to be male. This generation was alsothefirst one who use a real-time clock to determine whether it was Morning,Dayor Night and the Wild Pokemon changed depending on this clock.

2002-03 saw the release of the next generation in Pokemon, namely PokemonRubyand Pokemon Sapphire. Adding another 135 new Pokemon, the region of Hoennwastotally new and many new features were introduced such as full-colour

    graphics,

proper growing berry trees, double battles and new HMs. These gamesfeaturedon the Gameboy Advance and played the same as their ancestors at theircore. The third generation was the one who have the highest number of games todate,

as in the following years many games were released, including Colosseum, thefirst 3D Pokemon RPG, (though differing incredibly from the normal formula, instead pursuring 'Shadow Pokemon') remakes of the original Red and Greenversions entitled Pokemon Fire Red & Leaf Green which supported many of thenew features of Ruby/Sapphire and eventually Pokemon Emerald, the thirdgamein the series which introduced many new features to the games and focusingonRayquaza as the main legendary. Emerald was the first to introduce specialability effects, the Battle Frontier, cinematic cutscenes and a fairlychangedstory. It also featured an entirely different font from the Ruby/Sapphire

duo.Pokemon XD was also released as a sequel to Pokemon Colosseum on theGamecube, following the same quest of Shadow Pokemon and the eradication of Cipher. There was also the release of games such as Pokemon Trozei, Pokemon RangerandPokemon Mystery Dungeon.

Then in 2006-07, the fourth generation of Pokemon was released on theNintendoDS. Entitled Diamond & Pearl, these two games were the first portable gamesto use psuedo-3D graphics, as well as add yet another 107 Pokemon to themix. Many of these new Pokemon were in reality evolutions of older Pokemon suchasElectabuzz, Magmar, Roselia, etcetera or pre-evolutions of Pokemon such asChansey and Roselia but there were also new Pokemon such as the starters,Starly, Kricketune, etcetera. Taking place in the Sinnoh region, these twogames featured the biggest Pokemon RPG to date. Introducing things such asuseof the touch screen, the Underground and the biggest battle change in thePhysical/Special split - attacks were now classified according to how theywork rather than what their type was. This changed some Pokemon massively, giving some like Sneasel (who evolved into Weavile in DP) a huge advantagewhile causing some Pokemon who used physical Hidden Power types somehardshipsfor now Hidden Power was always special, regardless of type. Diamond andPearlalso received complimentary games, including Pokemon Mystery DungeonExplorersof Time and Darkness, Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and the 3D battlerofthe generation, Pokemon Battle Revolution. Come September 13th 2008 inJapan, the third version of Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, was released, centeringon Giratina and introducing one of the best Pokemon adventures to grace theseries so far (in my opinion, anyway.)

Nowadays, there are 493 Pokemon total and every Pokemon you catch consistsof

HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed stats. Theyall

have one of twenty-five 'natures', and also have an 'ability' to call theirown that can help them in battle and depending on the ability, help thetraineroutside the battlefield as well. Some Pokemon can even get one of twodifferentabilities. Despite Pokemon being of the same species, it cannot be denied

thateach member of the species has a lot of variation in them. While eachmember ofthe species will turn out similar (unlike the Fire Emblem series where theRNGcan cause a unit to be good in one playthrough and absolutely awful in thenext)there will be some difference. But the thing that gives Pokemon the replayvalueis that you only have a team of six but many choices; it's worth playingagainto try out some other Pokemon that you may not have used on your first goof

the game. Now I'm on a tangent, blah. This should summarize the franchise, anyhow.

===============================================================================[4] DIFFERENCES BETWEEN D/P AND PLATINUM [S004]===============================================================================Of course, being the third version, there are going to be differences, prettymuch all of them adding to the gameplay at hand. A list of all of thechangesis below.

    1. The Sinnoh Dex has been revamped. While previously holding only 151Pokemonit now goes up to 210. The new 59 Pokemon consist of all of the new SinnohPokemon that were originally only available when getting the National Dex(such as Electivire, Gallade) etc as well as their pre-evolutions (such asRalts, Magmar, Yanma) and a few other welcome additions such as HoundourandSwablu. All Sinnoh Dex Pokemon except for Manaphy, Phione, Dialga andPalkiaare available before you get the National Dex. The only new Sinnoh Pokemonthatare not in the Sinnoh Dex are the legendaries such as Heatran, Cresseliaetc.

    2. The ability to rebattle Gym Leaders has been restored, in a new area intheSurvival Area called the Top Trainer Cafe. The Elite Four now have a secondround ala Fire Red and Leaf Green where the Elite Four's Pokemon areseverallevels higher, as well.

    3. The gym order has been swapped around; though still displaying as thefifthbadge, the Hearthome Gym is now the third gym, the Veilstone fourth and thePastoria Gym fifth respectively.

    4. Amity Square has had a revamp. Some of the gyms have also had a revamp, including the Eterna Gym, Veilstone Gym and especially the Hearthome Gym.

    9/351

    5. There is some 'snow' in the area around Twinleaf Town. It has littleimpacton the game, however.

    6. The male and female characters (Dawn & Lucas) as well as the rival all

havenew costumes, most notably being longer sleeved.

    7. Nearly every Pokemon in the Sinnoh Dex has been given a new sprite, aswellas those legendaries introduced in Diamond and Pearl. This does not applytoany others except for a few oddities such as Ninetales.

    8. Some of the TMs & HMs around Sinnoh have been located; most notably,HM05and HM04 are no longer in the Great Marsh or the Safari Zone, instead lyingin

different areas. A few of the items have also appeared in new areas, mostnotably the items required to evolve into the new Sinnoh Pokemon such astheElectrizer, Magmarizer and the Dubious Disc (as well as the Up-grade).

    9. Wild Pokemon on the whole have had some edits. For example, you cancatchGligar and Nosepass on Route 206, Ralts on Route 208, Houndour on Route 214etcetera.

    10. Gym Leaders and Elite Four members have new teams as well as newlevels. On the whole, they are harder than before. New teams incorporate the newlyadded Sinnoh Dex Pokemon - some of the Gym Leaders even have new 'main'Pokemon. For example, Volkner's main Pokemon is no longer a Luxray.

    11. The 'secret' part of the Wayward Cave is now accessible anytime. Therockthat originally barred entry unless you had Strength has now been removed, meaning that cave can be explored to the end of the secret passage. Thismeansyou can catch Gible and pick up TM26 Earthquake much earlier than before.

    12. Elite Four members now have a completely unique battle background, eachone of them having a main colour theme of whatever their type is (exceptCynthia, of course, who has a purple/white mix). They look amazing.

    13. Some of the Swarm Pokemon have been changed. For example, Pidgey is nowa normal Wild Pokemon on Route 229, but a swarm is needed to find Pinsirthere.

    14. Move tutors have been added to Sinnoh; there are three each teaching aselection of moves infinite times. You have to pay them in shards.

    15. One of the previously secret Poketch applications in DP can now begottennormally in Platinum (the Luvdisc one, specifically.)

    16. The Veilstone Department Centre now has a basement containing a varietyof

berries and Poffins, which is helpful if you want to evolve Feebas without

    10/351

going through all of the trouble of making good Poffins or something. Youcanalso buy Lava Cookies in this basement.

    17. Some new areas have been added, the most major of which are theDistortion

World which plays a large role in the storyline and the Battle Frontier, whichis similar to the frontier in Emerald.

    18. A new Key Item called the Battle Recorder features. This allows you torecord either a Battle Frontier match or a Wi-Fi battle.

    19. The Global Trade Station (GTS) in Jubilife has expanded to includeextrafeatures such as allowing you to upload or download Battle Recorder videos. There are also features allowing you to see other people's box designs orPokemon Super Contest decorations. There are two rooms dealing with BattleRecorder videos - one allows you to view the most popular, while the other

lets you upload videos and find specific videos using a code.

    20. The Pokemon which cannot be obtained within the game have changed.Howeversome Pokemon that could not be obtained in DP such as Tangela and Tropiusarenow available within Platinum.

    21. Platinum gives new forms, or as Nintendo spells it 'formes', to a totalofthree Pokemon - Rotom (who gets five new forms), Giratina and Shaymin.

    22. There are some new items such as the Gracidea Flower which allowsShayminto change into its Sky Forme or the Griseous Orb that lets Giratina changeinto its Origin Forme when equipped.

    23. The Wi-Fi room has been changed. It is now a room similar to the UnionRoomin the GBA games but you can still ask to trade, battle etcetera. Enteringfriend codes is also much easier. Instead of using the menu with lettersandetc to enter it with it being locked to numbers, there is a new window withthe 10 possible numbers that you can hit very easily with your stylus onthetouchscreen to enter the friend code.

    24. The Old Chateau event with Rotom is now available as soon as you finishthe Galactic Hideout in Eterna City.

    25. Key Items to get specific events such as the Secret Key for Rotom ortheMember's Card for Darkrai are now distributed on Wi-Fi by Nintendo, howeverit is for limited times so you will not always be able to get itunfortunately.

    26. You must now see all 210 Pokemon to get the National Dex, instead of150.Yes, this includes Manaphy. Thankfully you can see it. Phione is not in theSinnoh Dex so that does not need to be seen.

  • 7/28/2019 Pokemon Platinum FAQ

    11/351

    27. Some of the levels of event Pokemon have been changed. Drifloon is now15,Giratina is 47, Dialga & Palkia are 70, Regigigas is 1 (yes, level one)Heatranis 50 and Darkrai is 50.

    28. The Spear Pillar quest has changed quite a bit with the addition of theTorn World. The Galactic Headquarters has also been revamped very slightly.

    29. You are able to get your own house in the Resort Area. You can furnishitand occasionally get visitors.

    30. Partners such as Cheryl, Mira and Riley can now be battled against intheSurvival Area's Top Trainer Cafe.

    31. Both Dialga and Palkia can now both be caught, like Groudon and Kyogrecould be in Emerald. It is now possible to catch Regirock, Regice and

Registeelin Platinum as well with specific conditions. Lastly, Articuno, Zapdos andMoltres are also available, which seems random to me but it's useful.

    32. The rival can be battled outside the Top Trainer Cafe every weekend. Itispossible for his level to rise and at the end his Pokemon team willactuallyhave higher levels than Red's team in GSC did, all of his team reaching79+.

    33. The partners you travel with also have new levels, being about fivelevelshigher than they were in DP.

    34. Stark Mountain and Route 227 have been revamped. Route 227 now featuresafew lava pools near the mountain and Stark Mountain itself has a lava-likehueinside. The actual layout of the places remain the same. The Great Marshhashad a complete graphical revamp also, now containing more navy blue huesthanthe previous muddy brown.35. There is now a Wi-Fi Plaza that allows you to play mini-games with yourfriends. It seems quite fun.

    36. Foreign Dex Entries can now be obtained for any of the 493 Pokemon, ratherthan jut a select few.

    37. A lot of trainers around Sinnoh have different Pokemon, many teamshavingnew Sinnoh Dex Pokemon to allow you to complete your PokeDex.

    38. Some of the PokeRadar Pokemon have changed, for example there is nolongerany specific PokeRadar Pokemon on Route 218.

    39. The mansion Pokemon have also changed slightly. Porygon is no longerthere

but now Ditto is only obtainable from there, for example.

    40. There are some more gift Pokemon to get other than the Riolu egg thatRileygives you in D/P. While this egg still stays, you can now get a Togepi eggin

Eterna City, an Eevee from Bebe in Hearthome City (same place as D/P butnowyou can get it anytime) and a Porygon from a house in Veilstone City.

    41. Battles as a whole are speedier than D/P.

    42. Some specific trainers have animations when they first enter battle -namely, the rival, Gym Leaders, Elite Four members and partners likeCheryl.

    43. HP Bars are now a sleek black instead of the usual white.

    44. Surf speed is now equal to that of the ADV games, rather than D/P.

    45. Special battles such as Gym Leaders and Elite Four members will have aspecial VS. animation before the battle starts.

    46. The Poketch has had a slight graphical remake and now the up/downbuttonsactually go the proper directions rather than both going forward.

    47. One or two moves such as Hidden Power and Razor Leaf have newanimations.

    48. Platinum possesses an entirely new game intro movie.

    49. The cutscene at Spear Pillar is totally different.

    50. Area signs when you enter an area are stylized according to the type ofarea, ie the Lake Verity one has a lake background.

POKEMON is the name of the creature, TYPE are the types of the Pokemon.EVO.METHOD is what must be done to get this Pokemon to evolve - if it is level,it will say level and also list the level it evolves at. Otherwise it couldsay Happiness, [Element] Stone, Beauty, Time, Item etcetera. There are afairfew possibilites. RAR is short for rarity and it will be listed with thepercentage of how often you find it. This would be like taking it from a

sampleof 100 wild Pokemon - obviously you could get lucky and find a 2% Pokemonmanytimes or never find a 60% Pokemon but on the whole it will show how rare itis.LVLs FOUND is short for levels found and will list the possible levels forthePokemon to be at. Finally, the find method is how the Pokemon is found.Thisfield can include any of the following:

so pick as to your preferences. Get through Rowan's monotonous speeches(holddown A to make it go faster) until you reach the end of it and are actuallyin your house.

Before you get to start, you will be shown a TV Report about something

whichI currently cannot tell you, but it has a picture of Rowan's lab. You'll beable to press A after a few seconds.

As soon as you start, press X and go down to options (three down from thetop)and press right on the first one (Text) to set it to fast. This makes itmuchmore bearable if you read at a good speed. The other two are incrediblyslow.

The rest of the options are to your choosing. Battle Style, changed to Set,can make it so you aren't able to switch when the opponent switches like in

the Battle Frontier, which can make the game a slight bit more of achallenge.Battle scene can turn the attack animations on and off. Button mode canstopyour A button wearing away as fast, perhaps. Frame is always fun tocustomize. You should note that Platinum has new frames from D/P, including a classicGSC frame (#18). Make sure to exit with the bottom option to save thesettingsyou chose, then save your game. Note that if you wanted to start a New Gamethen you would have to do B + Select + Up at the Giratina intro screen thendelete your file before you could save a new one.

When you start, move one square in any direction and your rival will comeupthe stairs and start talking to you. Once he stops, go downstairs and yourmother, Johanna, will also come talk to you. She tells you that your rivalasked you to go to his house, so do so. But not before she stops you at thedoor and tells you to beware of Pokemon. Pretty typical mother there.

Attempt to enter the rival's house and he will come out and bump into you.Hestarts heading to the lake then stops and goes back inside again. Sillyboy~

Follow him inside the house to end up talking to him again and watch himleaveand threaten you with a ten million fine, then follow him. Again. Thistime, head out of Twinleaf north to meet up with him. Ugh.

STRATEGYo-----------------------------------------------------------------------------oWith no elemental attacks, this battle is a simple brawl. Just keepattackingwith your main attacking move and use the secondary move if neccessary. Itcan be somewhat luck if the rival attacks a lot since you have no way togetyour Pokemon's HP to recover. Don't worry if you lose! Piplup usersparticuarlymight have a problem because of Turtwig's tendency to Withdraw about sixtimes,so you might have to pray for a Critical Hit. Using Growl six times toreduceTurtwig's attack power might be worth it, for this will reduce Turtwig toabout1 or a rare 2 damage per attack, as will you be because of Turtwig's

    Withdraws.

In any case it does not have Wing Attack soTurtwigcan battle against it but you'll pretty much have to use Tackle. Onceyou'vebeaten Starly, he will send his starter out.

For Piplup users, having a Starly will make this stage of the battleeasier.Starly's Wing Attack can pretty sustainably 2HKO it. Chimchar and Pipluparefairly frail, so you can take them down with ease no matter your starter.Bewary that they DO have the elemental attacks now, meaning they can score aSuper-Effective hit on your own starter. Otherwise it is pretty much anormalbattle. Finish it, claim your money and the rival will run off.

so and it will be unlocked in all of the towns you went to previously(exceptTwinleaf because it doesn't have a Pokemon Center). If you do go downstairsyou will get your Pal Pad which allows you to record friend codes andactuallydo something with Wi-Fi. You will be referring to it a lot if you like touseWi-Fi. Simply enter the Wi-Fi room once to get your Friend Code.

If you wish to get an Abra, catch a Machop in Route 207 south (which youcanfind north of Oreburgh) and talk to the young girl in the house in thenorth

of the city next to the Pokemart. The level will equal the Machop you tradeto her and it will always be Mild, I think.

The Pokemart equipment will get better later on - it improves as we getbadges. It will probably be improved slightly once we get our first badge~ Also, notethe large building north of the Pokemon Center. This is where you canrevivefossils that you might pick up in the underground - called the OreburghMiningMuseum. If you go inside and talk to the man at the counter with a fossilinyour inventory you will be able to revive it into a L20 Pokemon, dependingonthe fossil.

There's little else to do in Oreburgh, so head down to the mining part. Ifyouhead south then go left past the gap in the barrier and north again you canpick up two items. In addition, if you go to the south-east corner and talkto the builder there, you will get a Super Potion. I believe the slag heapnear there also contains a Heart Scale and a Pearl.

    Afterwards, head into the mine.
