8/14/2019 Polar Therm Trial a Kenya - August 2008 PL

Report on a trial conducted on the Polar Therm LD7 Insulated Cover fromKenya to the UK
7th/8th August 2008
Introduction
The trial was conducted by Omnia Management on behalf of Polar Thermal ProductsLimited, part of the Aerotrim Group. The trial was intended to assess theeffectiveness of the insulated cover as a passive means of controlling temperaturesof fresh vegetables during air freight from Kenya to the UK. In order to provide amore severe test of the system the route selected was on an Emirates flight viaDubai. This necessitated a flight change in Dubai and, therefore, exposed the palletto the high ambient temperatures that prevail in Dubai in August.
The Products
Product was supplied by Everest Enterprises Limited, Nairobi and the productsloaded were as follows:
1. Whole fine beans loose and pre-packed2. Extra-fine beans pre-packed3. Cut fine beans bulk packed4. Sliced runner beans pre-packed and bulk packed5. Hand-shelled peas pre-packed and bulk packed.6. Mange Tout pre-packed
All the products were packed into closed cardboard boxes and five temperaturerecorders were placed at various positions throughout the pallet as it was loaded(see below).
Packing in Kenya
The pallet was loaded in Nairobi in the afternoon of Thursday 7th August anddeparted the packhouse at 18.40 for the 3 mile journey to the airport. The palletwas transferred to the airport on an open dolly pulled by a tractor unit.
Despatch temperatures at the point of loading the temperature recorders were asfollows:
Temperature Logger Number E14 Bottom Left Hand Corner of Pallet - 3.1 to3.6C
Temperature Logger Number E12 Middle Centre of Pallet - 3.2 to 3.8C
Temperature Logger Number E15 Middle Corner of Pallet - 2.4 to 2.7CTemperature Logger Number E10 Top Centre of Pallet - 2.6 to3.0C
Temperature Logger Number E13 Top Corner of Pallet - 3.9 to4.3C
Details of the temperatures recorded at 30 minute intervals are given in Appendix1.

Flight
The pallet was booked on Emirates flight EK722 which left Nairobi at 23.35 onThursday 7th August. This flight landed in Dubai at 05.34 on Friday 8th August andthe pallet was transferred onto flight EK015 which left Dubai at 08.24 on Friday 8th
August. Due to the short time between EK722 landing and EK015 departing therewas insufficient time for the pallet to be placed in a cold room.
Ambient temperature in Dubai at that time of the morning on 8th August was 34C.
UK Arrival
Flight EK015 arrived at London Gatwick Airport at approximately 12.45 on Friday 8th
August. It was cleared for collection at 15.30 and arrived at Morgan Air CargosLondon Heathrow facility at 17.30 the same day. Ambient temperature in the UK atthe time of arrival at Gatwick was 20C.
The pallet was broken down almost immediately on arrival at Morgan Air Cargo.Location of the boxes containing the temperature recorders was determined andthese were collected and the time of collection noted on the labels attached to eachrecorder.
Product temperatures were taken manually as the pallet was unloaded and therange was found to be 7.6C to 11.9C.
Product was held in Morgan Airs cold stores until despatch to Exotic Farm Producelater that evening.
Arrival at Exotic Farm Produce (EFP)
The product from this trial arrived at EFPs packhouse at 06.00 on Saturday 9th
August. Quality Assurance checks were made on samples of all the different typesof product and all were recorded as being 100% acceptable. Temperatures taken atintake were in the range 8.6C to 12.8C.
Appendices
The temperatures recorded by the temperature loggers are shown in Appendix 1.
Photographs showing the building of the pallet in Nairobi are shown in Appendix 2.
Photographs showing the breaking down of the pallet at Morgan Air Cargos coldstore are shown in Appendix 3.

Conclusion
Overall the trial went exceptionally well with only marginal temperature movementthrough the transit time from Nairobi to London Heathrow via Dubai and LondonGatwick Airports. The temperature loggers showed a consistent range of
temperatures with only a very gradual increase over the 30+ hours from palletloading in Kenya to unloading in the UK. The system was further tested by transitingvia Dubai and it can be seen that there was no noticeable increase in temperaturesas a result of being exposed to these high temperatures.
There were also no issues with build up of condensation in any of the packsresulting from inadequate air circulation or breathability of the Polartherm cover. All the products were assessed at Intake by the customer Exotic Farm Produce andwere found to be 100% acceptable.
The increases in temperature recorded were a direct result of the natural respirationof the products, proving that provided there is adequate post-harvest cooling and
products are loaded at the correct temperature then the Polar Therm cover is a veryacceptable means of passive control of temperature during air freight andmaintaining the cold chain to the satisfaction of the final customer.
