The way police officers are
often portrayed in movies and
television can make it look like
a pretty exciting job. Though it
can be, especially if you work
in a major city or one of its
suburbs, many officers have
gone through their entire
careers without ever having to
unholster their weapon.
But there's no way to know forsure what your experience will
be. You can be bored stiff one
minute, and be facing a
moment of sheer terror the
next, but you must be
prepared for both.

THE LAW ENFORCEMENT CODE OF
ETHICS
As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental
duty is to serve humankind; to safeguard lives
and property; to protect the innocent against
deception, the weak against oppression or
intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or
disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of
all people to liberty, equality, and justice.
I will never engage in acts of corruption or bribery,
nor will I condone such acts by other police
officers. I will cooperate with all legally-authorized
agencies and their representatives in the pursuit
of justice. I know that I alone am responsible formy own standard of professional performance
and will take every reasonable opportunity to
enhance and improve my level of knowledge and
competence.
I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of
public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be
held so long as I am true to the ethics of the
police service. I will constantly strive to achieve
these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself
before God to my chosen profession - Law
Enforcement.

Review each part of the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
Decide which part you think would be the most difficult to uphold over the course of a career
in law enforcement.
Why do you think this aspect of the Code is important to a police officer?
1. Where do most new recruits begin working?
2. Are there essential tasks performed by an officer?
3. Name three things an officer looks for while on patrol.
4. Discuss the difference between police officers on television and those on the streets.
5. Name 2 requirements to become an officer.
