Remembering the Ladies: Our Founding Mothers 11:15 – 12:15PM | CourSe fee $25

Instructor: Roberta Matz, Teacher and Community Organizer. M.A., Univ. of WisconsinWe all know that women in history are often relegated to second-class status – usually dependent on the status of their spouse. That practice does us the disservice of failing to teach us about many fascinating women. Join this class to hear about the earliest women of America – those pioneers, fighters, writers, business-women, inventors, and advocates, whose contributions helped birth this nation.

A History of U.S. Health Care from the Late 1800s to the Present Time 10:00 – 11:00aM | CourSe fee $25

Instructor: Dr. Sanford Barth, Educator and Consultant on Health CareCan we really call health care in the USA a “system”? This course will trace and analyze the development of health care in the United States from the end of the Civil War to the 2000’s. Emphasis is placed on the sociologic, economic, political and philosophic forces that shaped health care organization, structure and financing. We examine how and why we are different from virtually everyone else in the world when it comes to health care and with what results. Finally, in the context of what we have learned from the past, we will examine what challenges we face as the political season unfolds and ideas like “health care reform” and “is health care a right?” are debated.

4 WEEkS JaNuaRy 7-28

Comedy on Trial 11:15 – 12:15PM | CourSe fee $33

Instructor: Sheldon Seligsohn, JD Temple Law SchoolWhen you need a lawyer, it’s no laughing matter. But there is plenty of humor in and about the legal system. Jokes about lawyers, judges and juries have been around for years. Our discussions will focus on censorship and other important free speech and first amendment issues eg. how much “fun” can you poke at the President or anybody else without getting into legal jeopardy. In order to demonstrate the legal effect of humor in trials, clips from several movies: My Cousin Vinny, Chicago, Legally Blonde, Bananas and others will be shown and discussed.
