By President Jeff BrownResurrection Sunday ... for carsEaster is approaching as I write this – when Christians rejoice over the risen Jesus Christ and the new life He has made available through that event. It’s a miracle for us who cannot see the ‘behind the scenes’ work that He’s done.Shining the headlights of that onto cars (if I may) causes us also to ‘come back to basics’ – looking at what we do as a club and how we go about it. We’ve done a bit of talking about it recently. As most of you will know, I’m trying to get the Cadillac finished for the National Cadillac Rally held here in Toowoomba early next year. Will I make it? Probably not, when you consider how much there is to do, how fast I’m getting it done, and what things I have yet to pay for – chroming, paint, tyres, glass etc.It keeps me very busy in the shed most of the weekends, with a short Sunday diversion to church and whatever else Pam lures me away to. I shouldn’t say ‘lures’ as it gives the wrong impression. She continually reminds me I have a life outside of the Wreck-in-the-Shed, and if she doesn’t remind me, I have the rest of the extended family pulling at me. This isn’t really a problem as life goes on as the years fly by and the restoration is just one part of it. And when the car is finally finished it won’t herald the end-of-my-life-as-I-know-it and the beginning of another (though it will seem like if for a while).I have plans for making full use of the car when finished, and see Pamela and me off on long jaunts around the country – we both love travelling.Anyway, I’ve digressed. One of the basic tenets of the club is restoring cars so they can be used. There’s precious little point in them gathering rat droppings in a remote corner of the shed. They’ve got to see the sunlight on the open road. The Open Road! I’m starting to sound ratty like Toad.I’ve always enjoyed restoring but it’s frustrating how slowly it goes. But it’s somewhat encouraging to know, on any given weekend, there’s plenty of restoration work going on around the city on cars being brought back to the light. Resurrected, as it were, from a rusty, ignoble death.I’m also encouraged in that, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Hence the slow restoration process. In many ways I feel like I’m bringing something of value back to life. At this moment, many people pass it by in the shed. It’s just an unrecognisable heap of metal in the corner. Only I and my fellow restorers can ‘see’ the end result before it happens. It’s what keeps us going. But one day everyone will see it in all its glory and, like all finished vintage cars, it will be a glittering wonder to behold. It’s just like a miracle. It’s a bit like the Christian story really. So come on all you merry restorers – let’s get cracking and get those cars finished and out and about. There’s a world awaiting.

ASK THE PROFESSOR

Q: I have a part which I need to measure the radius. How can I accurately do this?

A: Measure the width and the height of the part.

if we imagine it is part of the full circle, you can see that you should go halfway along the width to measure the height.

Every point on the circle is the same distance from the centre.

This means that we can eventually get a right-angled triangle with all three sides related or measurable.

So now we can apply Pythagoras’ formula to the three sides.

Voila! We have a way of calculating the radius just from the width and the height.

In my case if I have a brake pad with a width of 30 cm and a height of 3 cm, then the radius is 39 cm

What about if it is more than half a circle, I hear you ask?

As it turns out it is exactly the same formula. The only difference is the little triangle has side h-r rather than r-h. (One is the negative of the other.) However when you square it they become the same.

Isn’t maths grand?

MARCH SOCIAL RUNWe got a very good attendance on this run with some new vehicles as well. I took a long time to finally bite the bullet and set a rally route but once the decision was made, Lynne and I had no difficulty especially as the roads we decided to use proved to be better than we thought. We travelled through Gowrie Junction to Meringandan and then on to Loveday Cove at Cooby Dam for morning tea. I can remember using this spot over ten years ago just after a large grove of pine trees was cut. The place was barren. We visited it another time during the drought when the water had receded but I was really surprised to see that the once very small shrubs had grown substantially and the great attraction, a full dam, really made the place a very attractive destination. It was so peaceful with the odd sailing boat on the dam, that most people were very happy to spend over an hour there. We then retraced our steps back to Meringandan and continued through the Kelvinhaugh district to our lunch destination at Rotary Park in Oakey. The run home used the 4AK road, an extremely good stretch of bitumen. Alan Geldard who lives at Jondaryan uses this road a lot and recommended its inclusion in a club rally.

PRESIDENT’S RUN 17th AprilJeff will be organising a gymkhana at the clubhouse. There will be a competition for the President’s Shield. We’ll be starting at 9.30am Sunday April 17, Further details will be given at the General Meeting.Bring you own lunch and morning tea to share, and come prepared for a fun day.

TAREE VISIT Wed 4th to Fri 6th MayI have met representatives of the Taree club and they have invited us to rally with them to places like the Jondaryan Woolshed and the Bunyas. At the last meeting, we agreed to put on a barbeque for them. They didn’t want a free barbeque so we will charge a $5 fee per head and all club members are invited to attend. The date is Friday 6th at about 6 pm.Members are asked to drive their old cars on the night of the barbeque and it’s probably best if old cars park in the carpark and moderns park on the street. There will be a sheet passed around at the April meeting for those who wish to attend or you can phone or email me.

DALBY 7/8 MayThe Dalby club always organise a great weekend and this year the event will begin in our area with a visit to White Mischief at Mt Tyson and the Aviation Museum at Oakey before continuing to Dalby for an evening meal. Sunday’s

RALLY ROUNDUP destination appears to be Lake Broadwater. The entry fee is only $20 and $65 per person will pay for all of your meals. I have entry forms.

THE ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MEET is at our club on 13 to 17th May. They have invited us to join them on Sunday 15th for a rally.

PETROL CONSUMPTION RALLYWas 22nd May now moved to 21st AugustThis event has been postponed to the 21st August as it clashed with the Gatton swap. We may drive our vehicles to the Gatton swap as our monthly run for May.

LAMA SWAP 22nd MayWe may drive our old vehicles to this swap at Gatton as that is the day the QHMC would like to see a lot of old cars out and about.

RACQ HMC RALLY 11,12,13th JuneOur club is hosting this rally and we are planning on approximately 150 participants. We hope to get lots of support from club members firstly by entering the rally and if unable to do so, helping with baking, parking duties etc. Entry forms are again in this magazine, on the Queensland Historic Motor Council website www.qhmc.org.au or from myself. We anticipate that many enthusiasts from other areas will come to Toowoomba for the event. We need to ask members to make a commitment to this event. Help is required on each of the days and there are jobs to do beforehand such as cleaning up the gardens, making the building pristine, assembling rally bags, food preparation (baking) etc.

SATURDAY:Help with morning tea and lunch, parking in the park next door, parking at the Empire in the afternoon and at the Golf Club in the evening. Some help may also be needed to place decorations on tables at the Golf Club.

SUNDAY:Help with parking in the park next door and at Pittsworth. We will need people to man check points on the run to Pittsworth. Help with table decorations at the Golf Club.

MONDAY:Help with breakfast preparation and clean up at the club house. Help with parking at the Cobb and Co Museum and help with the car display and lunch. If every member who wasn’t able to enter the rally did something, we would have more than adequate help. If you are able to help, please contact us or Ann and Jeff Cox.Some members have been a little concerned at the costs. The $45 entry fee covers a rally badge, morning tea and lunch as well as a series of ongoing things. All of the other fees cover food costs. Fees have been kept as low as possible.

Hope to see you on a run soonPat and Lynne

QHMC NEWS

The March meeting involved discussion of the action points from the February meeting plus items raised on the night.

Main item of discussion was the seat belt issue. As you know the Qld regs have virtually banned anyone under 16 riding in a vehicle without seat belts. The Council is pursuing this matter as SA has a blanket exemption for all vehicles over 30 years old.Qld transport bureaucrats seem to be concerned on the safety of those who may travel in the ‘muscle cars’ of the late sixties so the Council is going to press for relaxing the rules for those vehicles manufactured before 1960.On this issue, I spoke of the actions of a Restored Cars reader, Alex, who had contacted me. After a couple of emails we settled on an approach whereby he visited his local state member, with his Vintage, and discussed the issue. He mentioned the affect this rule has on families trying to enjoy their vintage and on the engineering reasons why seat belts are not fitted to earlier vehicles. The member in question did not even consider the affect on Heritage vehicle owners and now says he would have voted against the change and will contact the Minister on the issue. Alex also mentioned that QHMC was trying to work with Qld Transport but that it is a two way relationship and these issues should have been raised with the Council before being put into practice. The state member was in agreement.

Rod Graydon is developing a standard dating form for SIVS registration as it seems that some Qld Transport are being confused by different clubs presenting different forms.Once this is issued each club will be required to add their club logo to the form, and that will be the only difference between forms.Later this year all rules will come under review as they plan on introducing a National Code of Practice. The new proposals can be viewed at –http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/standards/index.aspx

A number of delegates asked that the council investigate the new 45 & 90 permit scheme recently introduced in Victoria. Their scheme gives more usage for less cost, particularly compared to the Qld scheme. The Vic scheme is based on the SA scheme but seems to be not quite so strict in some areas. The SA scheme allows only for authentic vehicles and that has been the sticking point as it depends on just how pedantic the examiner is.The Council has asked for all clubs to consider the Vic scheme and give their opinion next general meeting, held in May.I have put to the President that we go for a broader approach. Ask for a no restriction 45 or 90 day scheme. This to be offered on standard registration and priced at the per diem rate of standard registration, plus a small fee for the permit book. The pages of the book would be of thermal paper and the pages be numbered 1 to 45 or 90, with the renewal date and rego number also on the page. When you are going out you would simply take out a page and attach it to the windscreen. By days end the print will have faded and you would use a new one on the next day. This would be offered to everyone as there are other hobby vehicles, including campers who would benefit from this.It would be easy, no filling in of forms or log books, and cheap, and you could use your hobby vehicle any day you choose. Think of the number of days you actually use your

hobby vehicle. It is the simplest scheme I could think of. The President has asked that I write it out and send it in as a submission.

The Vintage Motoring Club was accepted as a member of the Council.

If you have any questions on this or issues you want raised please contact me.

Graham Allum

The National Highway Safety Council has done extensive testing on a newly Designed seat belt. Results show that accidents can be reduced by as much as 95% when the belt is properly installed.Correct installation is illustrated above.

I don’t think that this is the seat belt law the QHMC has been discussing, though...

While my wife Karen & I were in Europe last September, we happened across the Tour du Leman in Geneva.

FOREIGN RALLIES - TOUR DU LEMAN

The first “horseless carriage” race took place in Switzerland in 1898. What was initially a leisurely drive around Lake Léman gradually became a genuine speed race that made its mark on the country’s automobile history. By inviting classic car collectors to participate in this prestigious annual event, the organisers bring back to life the early days of automobiles in the Léman region. There were 23 cars in the 2010 event. The ones that drove past us seemed to all date well before 1910, so it was a surprise to see them in peak hour traffic.

GRAHAM’S OLD VEHICLE QUIZ

Brush at 2009 David Hack Classic

Hi David,As promised here is my news update from overseas.

Arrived into London at 5am on Thursday morning to rain and 5 degrees. Oh to be in England now that Spring is here. Today is sunny and 10 degrees.

The first couple of days here we went looking for a car. I set my mind on a Saab convertible with automatic.

The first one we looked at we were told that it had only done 70,000 miles. This was a twelve year old car and through a dealer. There were no service records with it and on inspection I found:• The electric hood didn’t work properly.• There was no coolant in the radiator.• The engine oil smelt as if it had been there for years.• The hood leaked.• The seats where badly worn.On asking the dealer if it was genuine mileage he said he thought so. But I am pretty sure that the genuine mileage would have been either 170,000 or 270,000 miles.Needless to say he had no sale!

Rang up about another couple but they had been sold and saw one other which was not suitable. The wrong colour. Of course I was looking for a yellow one.

Eventually found a good one. Ruby red in colour with a full service history in very good condition which I have purchased and pick up in a couple of days. Will send photos of it next time.

Hope to get out to a couple of vintage car meets over the next couple of weeks . If I do I will send photos.Regards to everyone.David Liffen

RACQ QHMC RALLY

BackgroundThe Queensland Historic Motoring Council (formerly known as Combined Council) conducts a rally each year. This year it is Toowoomba’s turn to host the rally, and the DDVVMC has been tasked with the organisation.Your QHMC representatives (Jeff Cox & Graham Allum) as well as Ann Cox and rally directors Pat & Lynne Murphy have been busy with planning the event. Now we need your help to make this rally a huge success.

Help by entering the rallyThe entry form is attached, so make sure that you complete it and return it before the end of April

Help during the rallyThere will be a lot of work to do. Like at the swap, if every member does a little bit extra, then every club member can still enjoy the rally and no-one will be saddled with too much work.

Sunday, the main rally day, we will need help with parking at the Pittsworth Museum. We are hoping that the Pittsworth locals Robert & Peter Jarvis and John Sutton might help out with that task on the day.

Here are the main tasks where we need volunteers:

Before rally Set up and fill rally bags. Cooking biscuits, cakes, slices, scones & pikelets Knit/crochet coat hangersSaturday: Registration & serve morning teaSaturday Lunch: Cook sausage sizzle and serveSaturday at Empire: Direct parking & securitySunday: Rally route directors Parking at Pittsworth Museum (Pittsworth members & others?)Monday: Cook and serve breakfast Parking at Cobb & Co. Help to serve lunch at Cobb & Co.

Ladies: Lots of food required for Saturday morning tea and hopefully enough to serve with Monday lunch.

SundayAssemble from 8.00 am for an 8.45 am departure to travel to Pittsworth via a stress free circuitous route. We will be visiting the Pittsworth Pioneer Village where you will be supplied with morning tea, then allowed to explore the Pioneer Village. Lunch will be served and you can stay a while as there will be Queensland Day activities and craft displays at the Village or you can explore Pittsworth itself. Then you can meander back to Toowoomba, via a different route. There will also be places of interest on the return route.Presentation dinner will be starting from 6.30 pm again at the City Golf Club.

MondayBreakfast will be available at the DDVVMC club rooms from 7:00 am with a 9:00 am departure to the TAFE Car park, located in the heart of Toowoomba. We will present a stunning car show in the car park and you will be able to investigate Cobb & Co Museum or stroll through Queens Park. The museum has recently upgraded exhibits as well as extended display areas. Lunch will be Pizza in the Park and available from 11.30 am.Entrants can then return home at their leisure.

Entrants are encouraged to wear period costume applicable to the era of their vehicle, particularly at the Presentation Dinner. Don’t forget to pack chairs for the various stops during the rally.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORTed Godfrey has written a few times about some of his early memories of Toowoomba vehicles.

I have since found out that he and Brian Timms were old school chums and partners in mishaps, as the following story from Del shows:

When Brian was 13 and a boy from the west, his father wanted to send him to boarding school in Toowoomba for his high schooling. Brian wanted no part of it so he came to live with his Uncle and Aunt and cousins in Campbell St, to attend Harristown High School. Ted’s family lived a block away in Taylor St., so Brian and Ted met on the first day of high school and have been great mates ever since.

One of their favorite stories that I always get a smile out of is where they were heading off on their push bikes, to some car thing of course! On the Taylor & Mort St intersection one rider thought they were turning the other thought they were going straight ahead! The result of course two lads & two bikes in a heap and wouldn’t you know it, a policeman right on the spot! Memories.

Ted has also contributed this story to Unique Cars magazine, Issue 322, page 107

DO YOU WANT YOUR CAR PAINTED?

Lately a number of our members have used a spray painter named Mick to paint their vehicles using the facilities at the workshop. If you want your vehicle painted and try some of the local paint shops, you may find they are either not interested or will only work on your project when they don’t have any other work.Mick has done work for Alan Hoffmann, Ted Taylor and Keith Hoffmann. Each of these clubmembers worked along with Mick to complete their jobs. He seems to be able to complete a job in two to three weeks depending on the condition of the vehicle and the amount of work the club member does himself. If you are interested, Alan Hoffmann has Mick’s phone number.
