DDVVMC MANAGEMENT TEAM 2009-2010By President

Kevin McGrath

WE DID IT — you, I and every member who contributed or attended! Yes, the 40th celebrations were magnificent. A brilliant autumn Saturday. A great crowd to watch the car events. Those two maniacs, Michael and Mike (with others) were responsible. I can still hear there fiendish laughter at us. BLINDFOLD driving was the most confronting and confusing thing to experience. One loses all points of reference. We drivers had a blindfold, but I think our navigators were also blind, according to our results.I still have hysterics thinking of one lady navigator, half out of the car, giving furious visual hand signals to the blindfolded driver. Thankfully they are still talking to each other as I spotted them together on the rally in their faithful old R...This has to be a COMPULSORY event in the future. And the cars — a paddock full of golden oldies, all spit and polish, a joy to behold. And lots competed in blindfold, circle, figure-of-eight driving and a motorised version of medieval jousting. All great fun.To have 114 sit down to such a great dinner, thanks to QCWA Kingsthorpe branch, and our ladies, good food, good company, good speeches (reminisces), a really great night. Since I had 6 or 7 speakers for the night, I hinted a month ago that 3 minutes would be good as I didn’t want anyone getting bored, so such speeches ranged from 4 minutes to 21 minutes — and we could have listened twice as long! Those Camera/Video nuts, namely Keith, Graham, Mitch and Jeff were snap-happy all weekend and no doubt will cooperate to produce a wonderful feature film for the club and I’m confident they will have something for us to enjoy after the AGM in August. We did get a serious CALL TO ARMS. Jeff and Ann sprung a little surprise on us that revealed our members to be predominately over 65 years. This club will die if we don’t modify our views and get younger people as members. Encouraging to see 5 younger prospective members at last meeting. Perhaps we could use our feature film (to come) and with a focused ad campaign in The Chronicle, to put on a film/education/information night as do the travel agencies. This would create awareness and bring new members. We don’t want to, and can’t afford to lose existing members. I am hearing increasing noises that our membership fee of $75 is excessive. I supported its introduction but now have serious doubts about it. It is causing disharmony in the club. A number of club members are pensioners or self funded retirees, some with modest reserves. We have all taken a hit with the Global Downturn and SF Retirees took the worst with a 30 to 60% writeoff. Your urgent consideration please to a definite reduction in membership fees and a start to using the 4 categories of membership. Both need serious discussion at the AGM. Talking of the AGM, I’d like to see every position contested by at least two members as this would ensure that we have a vibrant, progressive, confident and considerate club. There was a great club spirit at the celebrations, so let’s carry that on so it becomes a habit. With 114 for Dinner, 80, yes 80 for breakfast and even more for Sunday lunch, with up to 30 cars in the rally, with our club ladies providing more food and presenting it, together with the men cooking up a storm on the BBQ it seemed that every 10 minutes we were eating and telling tall stories of the past and future. Of course this didn’t happen by accident, but by the dedicated action of so many people whom I won’t even try to name, except to name Ann COX.Ann organised, cajoled, coerced and led so cheerfully. Her team were magnificent and we salute you all. But the best of all the weekend was seeing the young families with babies from a few weeks old to the toddlers to the 5 and 6 year olds [who had a ball] to the teenagers and young adults all present and enjoying it. These are our hope and future of our club, let’s nurture and encourage them. Also lovely to see the enjoyment of the ‘stand in’ Grandmums and Grandads as they nursed and interacted with the young.Jacki and I will be away until late June and V.P. Brad has agreed to chair both meetings in my absence. My Thanks. KEVIN

Bob’s Body Restoration TipsDrying the AirAs your compressor is running, the air passing through is heated, thus changing the moisture in the air into steam. This steam will not be trapped in the water trap, and pass on to the paint work or air tools. Therefore the need to cool the air (steam) back to solid water. One sure way is by means of a refrigerated air dryer. If you are having trouble convincing the better half of spending $5000 to cool the air on your $500 compressor, then there are other less expensive ways to cool the air.One way that I use (with reasonable success) — take a couple of coils of ½ inch copper tubing connected between the compressor tank and the water trap on your regulator. Place the tubing in a bucket of water. It will cool the air as it passes through. Make sure to constantly check and empty the water trap as you will collect more water than previously.

Visitors... In the shed...

Cameron, driving his restored 1967 HR Holden, missed out on collecting his trophy for Best 6 Cyl in last month’s Fuel Economy Run, so it was presented on the May General meeting night.

As the Cox’s 1940 Chev is nearly ready to paint, Ann shows she is prepared to roll up her sleeves and lend a hand. Having been inspired by the Hoffmann’s ‘painting the car in the driveway’ story in last month’s Rag, she’s picked out a decent sized brush. Jeff however is worried she’ll ‘miss a bit’ due to her jerky arm action, even though his left ear is still thobbing and red — which disproves his theory about her lack of accuracy. Ted Taylor just keeps out of broom distance, wondering how he got roped into this silly idea. But it’s given him ideas about painting his 27 Chev.

Visitor Michael Salvestro enjoyed the May general meeting night (plenty of cake and coffee - thanks girls). Michael has just finished getting a 1978 Holden Sandman panelvan back on the road. Thanks Michael for saving one.

Other visitors included, from left, Peter Saines who has a 1970 280S Mercedes, Peter Pauli who still owns a locally-sold 1924 Essex 6 (first of the sixes) in original condition though cut into a ute, and Paul Keightley with his son Harrison (11).

Hi all... the 40th has come and all too soon has gone. It was a full-on weekend for everybody and I think it wore down most people with the members we have spoken to after the weekend going home for a bit of a NANNA nap on the Sunday afternoon. It was a great turn out of cars and members. The car park challange set up by Mike Richards was a real crowd pleaser. Watching others go through the course inspired other to have a go and in the end all the spots were taken up.The other games set up in the park also kept people busy, and were forerunners for the July run events, so get ready for that. The run set by Pat Murphy on Sunday was very well done and took in the spots of the early days of the club that most people were not aware of. Although it was the first day of Sunday trading it didn’t seem to really worry us too much.I know I say this each time but thank you very much to everybody who helped over the weekend.

Hey Everybody, It’s Mitch here again... and I’ve decided to write another article about the last month’s adventures. As you all know the club celebrated its fortieth anniversary over the 15th and 16th of last month. It was huge; in one of my photos I counted almost 30 vehicles, most of them being veteran/vintage. I was introduced to many members who I had never met before and I think they deserve a little encouragement to get themselves and their cars out on our rallies more often. Some of these cars are absolutely beautiful and in my opinion should get out a little more often than just once a year. The driving course that had been set up in the clubs car park was loads of fun. I have just sorted out how to change gears without the grating and now you all have me driving blindfolded. I am wondering as to what will come next. It’s a very different experience driving blind under a navigator’s direction. I’m sure it would have been just as hard for dad letting me drive his car blind. Darren and Amee did a really good job in their Chandler with one wheel remaining outside the lines at all times which proved to be the best strategy because you only lost a point for every time a wheel crossed the line. The Chandler has very heavy steering at low speed making it almost impossible to weave tightly around corners — so congratulations to Darren and Amee. I also had the hilarious experience of navigating my dad and Joe around this course. Thank you to all who made this event possible.

Dinner and presentations at the clubhouse that night made a good night out for those who attended. There were many speeches done by founding members and other long-time members of the club. I got many laughs out of these speeches — mainly from the one read by Jeff Cox. The prizes handed out throughout the night were nice, with handy tools or car-related products. What really took the night away were the two beautiful anniversary cakes. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that much cake. I am really proud to say that I was there and in the moment to see the cakes get cut and witnessing the club’s fortieth come-to-pass. It’s great to see the club still together and how much it has grown.I was one of the fortunate ones to be up bright and early back into the club for breakfast the next day. It was a very interesting rally around town and I learnt a lot about the club’s history and how it began. I still quite often get to visit the Water Street clubhouse being a part of the FX/FJ Holden Club. I thought it would be a good idea to take a few videos on this rally which I’m sure I’ll either stick on a disk or whether someone will be doing up a disk to stick them on, either way would be good. I did see a lot of couples swapping over drivers which is good to see. Getting the ladies in on the driving act is a great experience for them. Dad and I will take turns between who drives on a rally and I can’t wait to get my own car restored which will be a while down the track yet. Thanks to all who made this weekend possible and so good.Hope you all had a great fortieth anniversary.

Mitch McKeiver.

Alan Geldard circuits the pole in the 1929 Chev ute, managing to only pull it over half a dozen times.

John McPhail checks the engine is still in his 1926 Chev.

What a splendid lineup... enough to make any club proud.

Lyle Handley edges his 1930 Model A Sport Coupe into the first part of the course, guided by Alan Waite. So far so good.

Jeff Cox stops neatly in the ‘garage’ (note the appropriate hand signal). He didn’t do too badly though some would say he normally drives ‘blind’, relying on Ann’s directives from the passenger seat, so perhaps had an unfair advantage. Still, it just wasn’t good enough for a prize on the night.

Right: Bill Fischer gets a wheel over the line in the same spot as nearly everyone else, though was quite accurate none-the-less.

Trevor Hoffmann about to get blindfolded in his 1926 Dodge, with Kay Burgess as navigator.

It was great to see Tom and Marlene Harrington out in their 1928 Chev tourer — be nice to see them more often.

And it was just as good to see Joe Ciantar’s Model A in the thick of things, in spite of it’s hood bow problems.

Club stalwart James Meara doesn’t do too badly keeping between the lines in the 1928 Essex (initially) with nephew Michael Baker as co-pilot.

Arthur Gillam turned up to display his 1955 Vauxhall ute, bought new locally by his father.

Rick looks nervously over his shoulder as Nerida backs the ‘55 Plymouth Belevedere up. “Ha”, she thinks, keeping her cool, “if only he knew I drive it like this all the time”.

Michael Wells gets to whack a few balls in the Classic Joust.

Young Hayley proves even the girls can joust with the best.

Joe Ciantar’s Model A Ford in the club lineup.

Dressed for the occasion and period are Cherryl and Brad McKeiver, enjoying themselves at the Saturday night dinner.

Bad to the bone — though it’s hard to tell who’s leading who astray — Hayley or mother Amanda Sallaway.

James looks like he’s resigned to the fact that daughter Eliza is plotting to take over their vintage car empire.

New member David Grant is graced by wife Karen’s company at the dinner.

Lyle and Betty Handley ham it up at the 40th Dinner.

Many hands make light work: the fellas get the BBQ hot, ‘chew the fat’ and keep the starving hordes satisfied with real meat. It’s called ‘multi-tasking’, girls... ‘meat’ the experts!

Jeff & Ann Cox honour Col Baker, our oldest member at 81.

“Child,” says Colleen Richardson. She’s right... have you seen Len’s ‘big boys toys’ collection? Nice 30s outfits.

Enjoying the day just as much as the vintage-driving adults were Joshua Ciesiolka and friends Anna and Grace Vievers.

Mike Richards did much of the organising over the weekend for the car events, but had to put up with Rick at Dinner.

Moving ‘ford’: Len Richardson, Les Richter, Graham Allum. Their Falcons grace our back cover.

Tim and Wendy Murphy, with baby Zac.

The three founding members who have been with the club for the intervening forty years: Col Baker (at 81, our oldest member), Mal Cochrane (who was accompanied by wife Gail), and Col and Wyn’s son Clyde — all get to cut the 40th Anniversary cake, complete with sparklers and a little veteran car.

DDVVMC 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WEEKEND

Page 10

Len and Colleen Richardson’s loudest toy on the day caused quite a stir among the red-blooded males.

Bill and Del Fischer’s faithful Model A Ford Tudor passing Laurel Bank Park, shortly before burning off Noel’s 1912 Cadillac.

View from Noel Cox’s 1912 Cadillac as he follows Bernie Forster’s 1911 Maxwell out onto busy James Street.

Clyde Baker explains what happens when occasionly the engine stops in his 1944 Ford Jeep: “It fails to proceed”. All the classic car owners listening knew exactly what he meant.

The Murphy’s love affair with antique automobiles is nurtured early. The ‘lellow car’ is apparantly Max’s favourite, as he sits with grandma Lynne in the 1928 Chev roadster. A real Wiggles car!

Ted and Merle Taylor’s immaculate 1927 Chevrolet tourer gets another outing. It’s always good to see it at club events. Can’t wait to see the 1927 Chevrolet roadster finished!

Perry and Judi Pascoe cruise up behind the veteran Cadillac in their 1958 Customline, as they pass by Queens Park.

Alan Hoffmann’s 1938 Packard graced the park — one of the enduring sights on most club outings.

Lance and Annika Peters get cosy in their 1929 Whippet, before embarking on their longish journey home.

Bernie Forster was happily accompanied on the Sunday run by his sister Margaret, up for a few days from Brisbane.

Trent Pascoe took charge of the ‘blue Falcon’ over the weekend.

Rosemary Kennedy skillfully pilots the 1961 Renault 4CV and reaquaints herself with the wonders of double-declutching.

Who remembers this? The kitchen in the little clubhouse in Water Street. The 40th celebrations have been a good time to reflect on where the club has come from, and where it’s placed to go in the future, thanks to many, many club members who’ve worked tirelessly and mostly anonymously in the background over four decades.

WARNINGDo not IMPORT a vehicle into Australia before obtaining a Vehicle Import Approval. It seems the government has, without advance warning or consultation, changed the motor vehicle importation rules. The new rules are effective immediately and will affect vehicles already in transit.See Richard Egglesfield’s letter below.May 12, 2010Re: Vehicle Import Rules Changed in AprilPlease ask your members to check the new rules before importing a vehicle. The Department of Infrastructure has recently, without any form of consultation or advance warning, begun rejecting

import approval applications for the importation of modified pre-1989 vehicles which are not original. The new approach is if the vehicle has been modified then the date of manufacture is the date the modifications were completed. It seems modifications can be anything other than original specifications (other than paint). The department has belatedly placed an Alert Notice on their website, and have issued a new version of the Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB) that relates to importation. The Import Alert can be viewed at: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/general/prI have asked our AHMF delegates to approach the AHMF to have them approach the government with a view to relaxing the rules for vehicles on the water.RegardsRichard EgglesfieldSecretary QHMC

Continued: THE SAGA OF “JOE ROCCO” AND THE COG WHICH IS BROKE (sent in by Joe Ciantar)

Hi Jeff,I have attached a photo taken at Clifton. Peter McGovern and myself left for Clifton at 7am on Sunday morning (May 2) and enjoyed a lovely drive via Wryeema, Cambooya, Nobby and finally arrived at Clifton at 8am on the dot. This allowed us time for a quick cuppa and for me to stow away the side curtains and lower the rag hood in readiness to drive Bishop William Morris around the block and up the main street to be delivered to the front of St James’ and St John’s Church to celebrate Jubilee Mass. Peter had the pleasure of three grand ladies in his 27 Essex coach. We caught up with a lot of people who we haven’t seen for years. Its amazing how some people don’t seem to have changed much at all and others you don’t recognize at first sight. Anyhow we left just before midday, arrived back in Toowoomba an hour later and I continued on to the airport to the David Hack display only to be met by lots of cars already leaving the event!!!!

Cheers James.

Had we forseen such an unusual happening we would have asked you to let us know the serial number of the engine. This will be found stamped into the flange of the crankcase under the carburettor. A smooth spot on the flange will indicate the exact position, and if indistinct first clean the spot with a rag and rub it over with chalk. Then after wiping off the surplus chalk, the number will stand out clearly.Again regretting the delay and awaiting the favour of your reply.Yours faithfully,Bestrac Ltd, J. Smith.(Spare Parts & Service Manager)
