Phew... now that the swap is behind us for another year, we can get back to club stuff.That’s not meant as any disrespect to either the event itself or the monumental effort put in by so many people.

I’m just looking forward to participating in some simple rallies and casual club functions, even going to the workshop a bit more. Which reminds me... I’ve got the President’s Rally coming up in April and I need some help. HELP!

One thing I really like about the club is that when you get through all the management stuff, there’s a big group of old car nuts (loose nuts mostly) who just want to play around with their toys... I feel this sentence is starting to get away from me so I’d better stop it there.

What I’m saying is; enjoying tinkering with and driving old cars is what it’s all about. Just about everything else we do is to ‘oil the machinery’ of the hobby so it’ll keep going and growing. The reality is that most of that is for the benefit of the wider movement, not really for ourselves.

If there was no swap, no clubhouse or workshop, those who are current members would still get together and do what they love to do... tinker with and drive their old cars. If membership didn’t exist, we’d probably still be doing exactly what we’re doing now with our cars, but could even be circulating among a wider group of friends. There’s nothing like enforcing club policies and rules to put rifts between good mates.

The hobby is about enjoying old cars. Collecting, restoring, repairing, hot rodding, modifying and maintaining is usually all aimed at one conclusion... driving. But not alone. Driving with like-minded friends to a common destination. Somewhere where the cars will be appreciated plus the work put into them to get them there.

Which reminds me of a quirky story. Mike Alabaster of Sydney, who recently restored a fabulous 1930 Cadillac V16 dual cowl phaeton, was telling me about one of his first trips out in it. He runs a small white goods repair business and usually drives a van. This day he’s out with a mate in the Cadillac. He pulls up at a corner store and his mate runs in for something. A beautiful young thing walks past and ogles the car. ‘Wow’, she goes, and raves about the car. Chuckling, Mike offers her a ride. Before he can blink she’s in beside him. Surprised, but delighted, he takes her for a cruise around the block. She’s ecstatic and thanks him for the opportunity. As he and his mate drive away, 16 cylinders purring, he contemplates what just took place.

BOB’S BODY RESTORATION TIPS

Cleaning off fluxWhen using brazing to do repairs on your vehicle , it if very important to clean off any remaining flux around the repairs. The flux can later play havoc with any primer or paint. Even after cleaning off the area, it is important to use a good quality etch primer first. This procedure should also be used after aluminium welding by oxy welding.

BREAKING NEWS ... BREAKING NEWS ...

Following boss David’s payment and presentation of medals to Dad’s Army at the Swap Appreciation Dinner there was some skulduggery.

Someone or some people put boss David’s car up on blocks. It was reported by some people watching that when he got into his car and tried to drive off nothing happened.

He was heard to say “ Oh #### my gearbox must have packed up. What the hell’s wrong with it?”

He still did not know what was wrong until someone pointed out to him that he should check his rear wheels. Sure enough one wheel was off the ground.

“I must admit it was a good joke and really got me” said boss David.

But these serious offences cannot be allowed to go unpunished in the army and a full investigation was started.

Firstly Paul Christianson was the prime suspect and after much torture with a pair of pliers, he admitted that he was one of the lookout men. But even after many more hours of torture he would not give up the names of the culprits. He has been reduced to Private and is no longer the paymaster.

We have finger-printed one of the bricks used and D.N.A. samples will be taken. Once we have found the culprits they will be stripped of rank and will lose all privileges at next year’s swap. Their pay will be reduced.

Boss David was last seen heading off to the Gold Coast still shaking his head and laughing.

He’s no oil painting (sorry Mike), and if he’d offered the same young woman a ride in his van, he’d be in jail.

We enjoy our hobby for ourselves, but we appreciate that others enjoy it too. That’s a major reason behind the endless greasy, dirty hours in the shed. It’s also why we put in so much effort to extend the fun of the hobby to others, like at the Toowoomba Swap.

However, now, just for a while, let’s get back to enjoying the hobby for ourselves before the next round starts.

John advised that a 15yo boy wishes to join the club and how does the club stand re this. In principle the committee agree that the boy could join with written approval from his mother/guardian and that use of the workshop would be under direct supervision only. LADIES RALLY 19th FebruaryWe had an excellent roll up of vehicles, two forms of competition and some very good feedback.The run took us to Top Camp where Lieutenant Owen Gorman and his team arrived in trying to establish a route to the Downs in the mid nineteenth century. SOCIAL RALLY 13th March The previous ideas mentioned in last month’s magazine are unavailable. Another member mentioned a collection in Crows Nest but we visited that three or four years ago so at the time of writing, we haven’t decided on a destination.We will probably just go on a country drive.Bring morning tea and lunch and meet at the club at 9:00am.

PRESIDENT’S RALLY 17th AprilAt this time, Jeff has indicated that he will be organising a gymkhana type of event.

TAREE VISIT Wed 4th to Fri 6th MayThe Taree Historic Car Club will be visiting Toowoomba on the above dates. They have made contact with us and given us an outline of their proposed itinerary.They have invited us to accompany them on runs to such places as the woolshed and the Bunyas if we are interested. We may also organise a barbeque for them so that they could have some social interaction with our members. They plan for 50 of their members to visit and they will mainly be driving vehicles from the 50/60/70 era.

Dalby 7/8 MayThe Dalby club always organise a great weekend and this year the event will begin in our area with a visit to White Mischief at Mt Tyson and the Aviation Museum at Oakey before continuing to Dalby for an evening meal. Sunday’s destination appears to be Lake Broadwater. The entry fee is only $20 and $65 per person will pay for all of your meals. I have entry forms.

The Armstrong Siddeley Meet is at our club on 15th May.

Petrol Consumption Rally 22nd MayGraham Allum always organises an excellent rally that has now become a fixture on our calendar.

RACQ HMC RALLY 11,12,13th JuneOur club is hosting this rally and we are planning on approximately 150 participants. We hope to get lots of support from club members firstly by entering the rally and if unable to do so, helping with baking, parking duties etc. Entry forms are again in this month’s magazine, on the Queensland Historic Motor Council website www.qhmc.org.au or from myself.We anticipate that many enthusiasts from other areas will come to Toowoomba for the event.

RACQ QHMC RALLY

BackgroundThe Queensland Historic Motoring Council (formerly known as Combined Council) conducts a rally each year. This year it is Toowoomba’s turn to host the rally, and the DDVVMC has been tasked with the organisation.Your QHMC representatives (Jeff Cox & Graham Allum) as well as Ann Cox and rally directors Pat & Lynne Murphy have been busy with planning the event.Now we need your help to make this rally a huge success.

Help by entering the rallyThe entry form is attached, so make sure that you complete it and return it before the end of April

Help during the rallyThere will be a lot of work to do. Like at the swap, if every member does a little bit extra, then every club member can still enjoy the rally and no-one will be saddled with too much work.

Sunday, the main rally day, we will need help with parking at the Pittsworth Museum. We are hoping that the Pittsworth locals Robert & Peter Jarvis and John Sutton might help out with that task on the day.

Here are the main tasks where we need volunteers:

Rally itineraryThe Club Rooms of the DDVVMC will be Rally Central.

SaturdayBook in from 9 amMorning tea and Lunch supplied.12.30 pm Depart for a leisurely drive to the Empire Theatre for a tour of this magnificently restored, art deco building. Afternoon tea will be part of the theatre tour.Social Dinner will be from 6.30 pm at the City Golf Club.

SundayAssemble from 8.00 am for an 8.45 am departure to travel to Pittsworth via a stress free circuitous route. We will be visiting the Pittsworth Pioneer Village where you will be supplied with morning tea, then allowed to explore the Pioneer Village. Lunch will be served and you can stay a while as there will be Queensland Day activities and craft displays at the Village or you can explore Pittsworth itself. Then you can meander back to Toowoomba, via a different route. There will also be places of interest on the return route.Presentation dinner will be starting from 6.30 pm again at the City Golf Club.

MondayBreakfast will be available at the DDVVMC club rooms from 7:00 am with a 9:00 am departure to the TAFE Car park, located in the heart of Toowoomba.We will present a stunning car show in the car park and you will be able to investigate Cobb & Co Museum or stroll through Queens Park. The museum has recently upgraded exhibits as well as extended display areas. Lunch will be Pizza in the Park and available from 11.30 am.Entrants can then return home at their leisure.

Entrants are encouraged to wear period costume applicable to the era of their vehicle, particularly at the Presentation Dinner.

These compact air compressors were built by Ingersoll Rand in the 1960s.They were similar in arrangement to a radial aircraft engine laying on its back, but with 6 cylinders, alternating between compressor cylinder and petrol engine cylinder.They were popular as a portable air compressor, especially with the railways.There is supposed to be a light pipe frame with a wheelbarrow wheel, and handles that the compressor pins onto for on-site transport.Starting was by means of a rope starter on the side.

He seems to be able to complete a job in two to three weeks depending on the condition of the vehicle and the amount of work the club member does himself.
