ddvvmc management team 2010-2011

I’ll never forget the first time I laid eyes on a vintage car. It was in 1974 and I was a 16 year old art student just arrived in Brisbane from the deep north, finding myself in a whole new world. I’d become friends with a fellow art student, a year older than me, who lived in a grand old 1930s house in West end, at the end of Ferry Road, near the river. everything in the house was a fabulously interesting antique, and in their garage was an original 1919 essex. It had been in the family since new, and was a future restoration project. Scattered around the yard were mark II Jags and I think a mid 30s Olds or something like that. It was an eyeopener into the world of old cars for me. But that was just the beginning.a year later they’d moved across the road into an 1872 colonial home. In the separate garage to the side was where my friend introduced me to his newly purchased car — a 1927 chev. In the ancient past it had been cut into a ute and painted a rich dark green with a paint brush. We didn’t care. It was fabulous. On the dash was a pocket watch, set in behind a nickled screw-in face and there was an elegant brass plaque warning people that riding in the car was at their own risk. It had a big wooden steering wheel, a cute little hood that extended out over the split windscreen, a green glass sunvisor, an enamel radiator badge and something called a ‘dogbone’ radiator cap. He lovingly called her eleanor, after the dear old lady he’d bought it from.I was hooked. now in my 50s, I’m still hooked. We fiddled with it and got it started and etched forever into

Bob’s Body Restoration TipsKnocking.out.dentsIf you feel the urge to use an axe to knock out the dent in your prize car, make sure you use the wooden end and not the steel end.the less you stretch the metal during repairs, the less shrinking in required later. I’ve said this many times but the safest way to hammer up dents is to use a shrinking type hammer head [looks like a butchers mallet] or a slapper [look for the hammer in the workshop and you will know what I’m talking about]. the slapper has a surface which resembles a file and will bring up the dents with minimum stretching. If you have an old horse file [a large file], with the use of the club oxy you can make your own slapper, copying the shape of the one in the workshop. either of these tools can be purchased from the larger auto paint and materials suppliers. these give you the chance to try your hand at panel beating without getting into a lot of trouble [hopefully]. always start your practicing with a curved panel in preference to a flatter panel. Have fun.

Bob Chapman

Visitors...

merv Rogers (left) and graham Powell were our visitors on the night. merv says he just owns an 87 XF Falcon, which is only seven years away from being a club-registerable car. graham is an ex-dalby Restored vehicle association club member, having moved to toowoomba. He has a 1934 Ford sedan under restoration with a 1929 model a Ford tourer in storage. that should make the Ford ‘loose nuts’ happy.

Welcome gentlemen!

my memory is the moment when we came flying back down Ferry Road, my mate driving, me clinging to the running board outside his door, and him swerving through the big, narrow brick gateposts — where I had to flatten myself against the car so we’d fit through, and realising the brakes were almost none existant. We managed to stop in time but fell out of the car laughing ourselves silly. thirty seven years later I am still laughing inside. last Sunday it bubbled to the surface while driving the ciesiolka’s 24 chandler around the city streets, taking passengers for joyrides they’ll talk about for years. I know many fellow club members will have similar, passionate stories about their cars. It’s why we have a club.as the new president, it’s these passions I want to see kept on the boil, I guess. and I’m glad many of us still get excited about driving our old cars, and do so at every opportunity. We are part of a big movement that’s growing all the time as newer and newer cars are added to the ‘collectable’ catalogue.that means more and more enthusiasts are being added to the mix but their old cars are more likely to be from the 70s, and in a few short years, from the 80s.You get the feeling sometimes that some of the older ‘true vintage’ crowd (1919-1930) think they are being pushed to the side or at least outnumbered, with the end result that some appear to have lost interest.I am not against this trend of newer cars being added. For me it will never be an ‘us or them’ issue. We’re all in this together, with the same passions. the age of our cars is immaterial. actually, I think it’s rather interesting that all old cars are now being refered to as ‘vintage’ by the public, whether they mean a late 70s car or a veteran.the true vintage diehards may choke on this a bit, but we won’t be able to stop it, so we might as well embrace it. no, I still think we, as a flag-bearer for the movement, should be specific about what a vintage car really is, but it’s a little disappointing

the industry hasn’t established a similar defining title to each following decade. Historic 40s, Historic 50s etc seems to be the closest we’ve got, yet we don’t seem to actively promote these. While at the Floral classic and StreetFest I got a number of requests for vintage cars for weddings and formals. these requests seem to be popping up more and more. and they are requesting the older vintage cars. You see the disappointment on their faces when you explain the rego situation. It’s equally frustrating because, if our club and the wider movement is to grow with new enthusiasts and if the value of our cars is to grow rather than fall, it’s because the public get to experience the fun of old cars. I’m talking backsides on seats.that’s why we need to take every opportunity to showcase to the community the fun of owning and driving our cars, as well as the fun and camaraderie of belonging to this thriving club.and finally, just a reminder that as david grant is away, I will be ‘editor’ for next issue.I’m looking forward to the year ahead of us. the swap is well in hand and the excitement is building. Pat has got some great ideas for rallies but will be looking for a greater imput from club members, both in planning and participation. In the meantime, I’m going to sit back and enjoy the ride. Just kidding. I’ve got a damned car to restore.

Jeff Brown

That’s me, clinging to the driver’s door, just before we swung in behind the EH Premier and through the big brick gateposts.

Floral.Classic.Car.show.2010Well another Floral classic car Show has finished with its usual success and with the rain holding off.though the number of cars was down on this year (due to other events clashing with ours), the quality was excellent which made it very hard for our judges. But once again I must emphasise that we are not doing ‘concourse judging’ as this would take too long.my thanks goes to all our club members who helped on the day, with particular thanks to Paul christiansen (my offsider), cliff and avril grice, and graham allum and Pat murphy for our great trophies.Of course it would be remiss of me not to mention our president, Jeff Brown, for all his organising of the cars in the parade, but I am sure he will give you his own report.Special mention should be given to the toowoomba Historic cyclers (James macdonald) for their display. We will see them again next year and involved with our 2011 swap.after paying out for our expenses from sponsorship and gate receipts and purchasing a $200 shade canopy for our club use we will still be able to donate $1000 to teen challenge, and that’s good news.Once again, thanks to everyone.now we can concentrate on “the 2011 Swap“enthusiastically

Mid 20s Austin tourer from Pittsworth Historical Village graced our Floral Classic Show & Shine with its charming original patina, after the Carnival of Flowers Grand Parade finished.

Right: You just don’t see them anymore! Gorgeous 1965 Kombi of David Baguley from the local Klub VW must have brought smiles and happy beatnik memories for more than a few visitors. Check out the interior!

Pam especially loved the little chrome ‘eyelashes’.

David writes: “It’s cool, it’s rare, and it gets you there, with smile everywhere! Peace dudes.” I guess that says it all.

There was a really good showing from Klub VW this year. Thanks fellas.

Graeme Schultz looks pleased with himself winning both Best of Show and People’s Choice with his 1968 Shelby Mustang. Trophies were 1958 Chrysler 300 and 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado respectively.

StreetFest the final event for toowoomba’s carnival of Flowers was the StreetFest, where the northern end of duggan Street and the gardentown section of margaret Street was closed for a car show and street festival.Just like the Floral classic Show & Shine, the weather was a little dull and threatening, but it didn’t stop 70 hotrods, street machines and a few classic cars from turning up.With the streets buzzing with dancers dressed in 50s and 60s gear, it had a lively festive atmosphere, especially around lots of 60s and 70s chrome machines. the crowd always seem to love this, and wander around looking longingly at the cars for hours, but when it comes to backsides on seats with joyrides, it’s always the older cars that get most of the attention.unfortunately we only had a few cars from our club turn up. among them were chappie’s Ford Fairlane, the Pascoe Ford customline, murphy’s 66 XP Falcon and Waite’s 1928 model a tudor. What’s with the Fords gentlemen? FORd must stand for Faithful Old Rockers dance, or Faithful Old Rockets drive, or something. Plus of course Pat and lynne’s 34 chev sedan and darren and aimee ciesiolka’s 1924 chandler to add a bit of cross-culture.I button-holed darren about doing some joyrides, which he unhesitatingly agreed to (after filling it with fuel), and it wasn’t long before we had our first customers. Off he went for endless laps around margaret, Hume, Herries and victoria streets. One of his first passengers was a primary school lad who I think had missed out last year on a joyride, and was determined to get one this year. He was thrilled, as was his mother.around lunchtime darren baled out and offered me the driver’s seat. Fortunately he’d given me a two minute lesson before in the safety of the council car park and was satisfied I’d handled it OK.I hadn’t been behind the wheel of a vintage car for about a decade, but all seemed to go well. I didn’t lose any passengers or leave gearbox pieces on the road behind me (so I believe), but as I haven’t talked to darren since then,.. maybe... anyway, I enjoyed telling my first few passengers ~ once we’d got underway ~ that this was only the second time I’d driven this car. the first time was a few minutes ago. I couldn’t see their faces in the rear vision mirror, but I enjoyed the momentary silence. Hey darren and aimee ~ your chandler is a really nice car to drive! thank you both so much. I had a lot of fun (in spite what some of my passengers may have said about their experience later). most people were really interested in the car, especially the boys, and it was good fun to explain what I was doing as I drove it. Hopefully we will have won a few hearts and minds for later.the day was supposed to go until the fireworks at 7pm or so, but by early afternoon all cars had gone except the chandler. and then the rain arrived mid afternoon and ended the rest of it.I’m sure it was disappointing for the organisers, but it’s probably too long a day to keep a big crowd entertained. However, I know several people did turn up late in the day expecting to see cars and fun stuff so were disappointed to discover empty wet streets.there are more plans afoot for next year’s event and it will be better I know. Stay tuned.

Jeff Brown

There weren’t too many motorbikes but Paul Christiansen’s 1975 Kontesa Cota still had a deserved win. Trophy is the Harley model that everyone wants.

Allan Waite shows off hit 1932 Cadillac V16 dual cowl phaeton trophy for Best Prewar.

David Teschner kindly drove his ultra low 1934 Chev two-tone grey hotrod in the parade as one of our six parade cars. The original four door tourer body was heavily modified by converting it into a two-door body, with front doors lengthened properly. It always looks stunning.

the exhibition incorporates nine 1/4 scale futuristic car models into current centre displays and offers an interesting contrast between past and future. the exhibition will be open September 22 and will run for two months.

this will, in some way, give us an opportunity to showcase our own club and how we are also involved in preserving motoring history.

HARVEST.RALLY..Sunday.14th.NovembercHRIStmaS RallY and luncH > this is the oldest rally conducted by our club with the first

occurring in the first year, 1970. From what I can gather, this event has been organised each year since then so it would be a great chance to keep the 40th anniversary spirit alive.

Steven and Karen Metzroth with kids Emma and Matthew recently bought this well-preserved original 1937 Chev sedan, and drove it from Sydney to Toowoomba without missing a beat. It was to become a rod (their passion) but decided to keep it as it is. Karen is restoring a 50s caravan.

What an amazing sight! A classic lineup of 1950s Holdens virtually as good as new. As time goes by, these ‘Australian’ cars will demand more and more attention and an even greater following than they enjoy now.

Discusing the finer points of FX Holdens is George Wilkinson on left, Brad McKeiver (his FX on the right), Jeff Brown and David Liffen.

This amazing collection of pushbikes is just part of the Toowoomba Historic Cyclers (James MacDonald). The next step would be to see them in use around the grounds.Very nicely restored 1948 K model Bedford with Holden-built

cab was the only truck on display this year.

This little 1937 Austin 7, owned by Justin McCarthy from Brisbane, joined our six parade cars this year.

Thanks again to our six parade entrants: James Meara with his 1928 Essex, Les Holt and his 1958 Cadillac, Len and Rosemary Kennedy in their 1915 Model T (dressed as usual for the occasion), John and Gail Reis in their 1922 Columbia and Dave Teschner in his 34 Chev.

Glenda and Vance Nevin’s 1974 Series 2 Jaguar in irridescent blue with supercharged 350 Chev V8 attracted lots of attention ~ it’s available for wedding hire as well.

Queensland.Historic.Motoring.Council.News.(from.QHMC.GM.23rd.September.2010)

RACQ.HMC.Rally:..RacQ Hmc Rally Queens Birthday weekend in June 2011 at toowoomba will be organised by darling downs veteran and vintage motor club. three flyers have been produced to date and are on the QHmc website.

Seat.Belt.&.Child.Restraint.Laws:..this is a further summary of last month’s news item: new Queensland Road Rules (QRR) introduced earlier this year. Seat belts and child restraints are in Sections 266 (rules) and 267 (exemptions). Website link: http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/legISltn/cuRRent/t/trantOpRuRR09.pdf Queensland has singled out children aged 7 to under 16 years of age and made it illegal to carry them in any vehicle not fitted with belts. QHmc is advocating for exemptions to QRR for our pre-seat belt era vehicles to reflect the law in other States. general exemptions for parades and processions are also on the agenda. South australia has already given historic club vehicles driven in that State a blanket exemption. QHmc is planning a continuing campaign to convince the Qld govt to see reason on the issue. QHmc Information Bulletin no. 1 of 2010 explains the matter in more detail.

No-cost.registration.for.Veterans:..a QHmc sub committee is preparing a questionnaire for clubs during the club consultation phase of this project. QHmc will develop a business case advocating for no-cost registration for veteran vehicles. the sub committee will also consider when and whether a 100 year rolling date might be appropriate for such a scheme. For a meaningful cross section of opinion, QHmc especially needs the input of clubs and members with pre 1931 vehicles at email [email protected]

QHMC.Rally.2013:..Sunshine coast antique car club will hold its 50th anniversary week-long celebration in conjunction with the QHmc Rally 2013 in June 2103. Please lodge your expression of interest to attend with name, number attending, phone, address and email address to Scacc PO Box 363 nambour 4562.

Web.Update:..the QHmc website has been updated and news articles changed to keep up-to-date with the latest news affecting our hobby. a new Information Bulletin section has been added to the website. this area will be used to publish all information

bulletins issued by the QHmc. the events calendar page has now been split to show a separate page for each year’s events.

CAMS.Membership.Drive:.camS has had internal problems in the last few years and has undertaken a deliberate national membership drive to broaden its income stream by targeting historic vehicle clubs. camS is relevant to sporting clubs and individuals but is clearly irrelevant to most of us. there has been virtually total rejection to the camS approach. QHmc has issued Information Bulletin no. 2 of 2010 explaining the issue.

Historic.square.number.plates:.most already know that they don’t issue them anymore, so if you have one on your car and you don’t want to give it up, keep the car registered. unfortunately, the plate is also not transferable to another car even if it is in your name.

Toll.transponders.and.toll.accounts:.ensure the toll company records your rego number exactly as tmR records it on the rego certificate. So take your rego certificate along when you open your tolling account, otherwise you might have problems with your number not being recognised by the tolling infrastructure.

Attracting.young.people.to.our.movement:.We are the custodians of our historic vehicles for only a limited time. We are getting older and we need youth to take over where we leave off. QHmc is seeking information from any of our members who have been involved in taking our older cars into schools so that the younger generation can gain an appreciation of our older cars. By involving them early they will come to feel comfortable with an historic vehicle and then get involved in the hobby at a later time. QHmc would like to hear suggestions for such a proposal either through your delegate or direct by email [email protected]

QHMC.needs.a.Secretary:.do you have at least basic computer skills? Would you like to volunteer to perform the Secretary role in QHmc. under Queensland law the QHmc can’t continue to operate unless it has a secretary. If you want the QHmc to stay in operation and continue to represent your club then someone from one of our clubs needs to take on the role of QHmc Secretary and attend meetings on the fourth thursday night of each month. Please call the President on 0411.694072 or write to [email protected]

Episode.2.“1962.Mini”Swapping the Hillman minx for the mini seemed like a really good idea. the mini was beautiful, British racing green with a silver gt racing stripe over the bonnet, top of the car and down the back. I was in love. It had wide chrome rims with radial tyres and, unlike the Hillman, everything worked from day one. Yes, I sure had moved up in the world alright. I loved it, everyone loved it, and people even waved to me as I was driving along. all good things must end of course and it wasn’t long before trouble began. the tiny 840cc engine was underpowered and living in an area with lots of hills, steep hills, the poor little thing was always straining to get anywhere. It used to overheat the engine and soon began to cause motor problems as I raced around town pretending I was one of the drivers from the 1969 heist movie ‘the Italian Job’. the handling was excellent, no body roll here to frighten the life from me, and it would have turned on a dime if not for the wide tyres rubbing on the inner guards on full lock. But hey, it still went around corners faster than anything else, that’s if you could get any speed out of the little motor. So yeah, the overheating problems that plagued the Hillman became the biggest problem with the mini. the mechanic said it was like that with British cars. then there was the carburettor problems. the Su carby was a pain and very difficult to adjust, so the engine either flooded or power was restricted. things I liked about the mini were the bucket seats and the simple but functional interior. Big pockets on the doors for lots of junk and easy sliding windows. the huge speedo in the middle looked great, even if it only told you just how fast you were nOt going. I will say one thing for the cars of the 50s and 60s — the interior always looked attractive and fun. Oh, and heaven — a four on the floor gear shift that worked, unlike the column shift of the minx. the other thing was the leg room. Well, I can’t really say much about that, seeing as how there wasn’t any. But let’s just say that going to a drive-in movie was very uncomfortable in the mini. Still I loved the feel of the car, but soon found I wished it was a cooper S or at least had a 1000cc engine. It was so underpowered it was a bore to drive. So after a couple of months the novelty of owning a mini wore off, and I sold it before it died. I had learnt from the Hillman that a dead car is worth very little. I then had a motorcycle for a while until I got the best car ever, but will tell you all about the Fc Holden next time.

dear Jeff,Following the committee meeting, held monday night September 6, I was discussing with Jeff cox the merits of using (Ford) blue grease to enhance the performance of his chevrolet. during that conversation I drew ‘Ford’ in script near the top of the notice board.Following the general meeting a chev owner happily informed me that he had added a little to my drawing; the word ‘sucks’.even if Brad had not told me about this I would have known it was done by a ‘chev’ owner as they usually cannot use the full car name and in this case didn’t use the full phrasing either.the full text is – “Fords suck clean air, chevrolets suck their exhaust.”now this may seem a little harsh and biased but the fact remains that the chevrolet owners are big on talk but small on action. How can I say this? I have checked the car park on meeting nights and the only vintage in evidence is a green model a FORd!!Well, truth be told, that may be a bit harsh. I look in the attendance book each meeting night and, as is custom, attendees write their name and vehicle. I see some interesting vehicles noted there, and some chevs, but on checking the car park after the close of the meeting I am disappointed to see nissans, toyotas and other modern vehicles, not mentioned in the attendance book.the poor ‘a’ gets lonely as it doesn’t speak any Japanese or Korean.I don’t want to hear any excuses about the distance or the dark, either; an old Ford came 20 odd Ks and climbed a not inconsiderable hill so a run across town should not be a problem. In fact let’s make a challenge; Fords against the rest. the only ones to count in this have to be over 30 years old. the score for each vehicle will be worked out by multiplying the age of the vehicle by the distance, in miles, travelled to the meeting. For example the green model a is 82 years old and it is approx 16 miles to Rocla court, ( I will have an exact reading by meeting night!). my score would be 1312. Yes, I know it is a big number, but to introduce decimals would confuse the chev owners, not the owners of chevrolets, or Pontiacs or Buicks or austins, but definitely the chev owners. So there is the challenge, are YOu up to it? Ford people, I need you too!
