Bob’s.body.restoration.tipsLooking after body metalNow you have just bought a sheet of body metal to start repairs to your joy. But you haven’t got it home long and already it’s starting to rust. This is one method I have found to slow the process down.Start by removing as much surface rust as possible. Do this by wire brush [by hand or on your angle grinder, using all protective covers], or by a scotch brite pad on your sander, or just sandpaper. Now it is reasonably clean, clean off any residue of oil etc, using grease and wax remover [remember to pour the liquid onto a clean rag, not holding a rag over the can opening, thus contaminating the contents of the can]. Use a clean rag to wipe on the grease and wax remover and another clean rag to wipe off the liquid before drying.Next we need to treat the rusty surface. Simply painting will not stop the rust from reappearing. There are several products on the market and read the safety precautions first and the directions of use. One product I like to use effectively is Turco W.O. #1. You can buy this from Sedl in South St. Most products will contain Phosphoric Acid. This product will require thinning 3 parts water to 1 part Turco.Using a scouring pad with foam on one side [found under the kitchen sink], scrub the panel with the rust converter [make sure to use rubber gloves and goggles, it bites]. There are different schools of thought after applying the rust converter. Read the instructions first. I prefer to wipe off the panel with a damp clean rag and air dry the panel. Now we need to apply some epoxy 2pac primer, this will help to protect the panel for the duration of your restoration, if kept dry. The automotive paint supplier will have a product to suit. Remember to always look ahead to the final paint products you will be using [acrylic, enamel or 2 pac paints].With 1 or 2 coats of epoxy primer this will enable you to still work the panel [folding, wheeling on the wheeling machine, welding with a light sand and applying body fillers].Contrary to what your mother taught you, always wash your hands after you eat. This will remove any fatty residue left from the food and stop you from contaminating the surface you are working on.Happy restoring.

Letters to the editor

Hi David,I noticed the photo of the little one-wheeled trailer on the cover of last months ‘The Polishers Rag’. I can remember a Toowoomba milkman delivering his milk from a similar but larger trailer behind of all things an Austin A90 Atlantic convertible.Ted Godfrey Tamborine

These photos were taken at the recent rally in Lismore, run by the Northern Rivers Vintage and Veteran Car Club. The Fords attending the rally were invited to display their cars at the local Ford dealer as part of their 100th Anniversary of trading in Lismore. As you can see two of the Model A’s on display are from the DDVVMC - 1928 Tudor of Allan and Jan Waite and the 1930 Roadster of Lyle and Betty Handley. The 1909 Model T belongs to Bob Trevan of Trevan Ford.Regards Allan Waite

Restoration run 15th August

A good roll up of members turned up at the clubhouse for the beginning of the restoration run organised by Michael and Sue Wells. Michael and Sue were rally directors for two years and I believe they did an excellent job. Many rallies were well attended and I also believe this reflected on Michael and Sue’s dedication to the job.Members were keen to see the progress made on Jeff and Ann Cox’s 1940 Chev. This car was first restored in the 1970’s and a number of its defects were overlooked thus making the current makeover a big job. Extensive rust repair needed to be completed before the car was ready for a repaint. This process is now complete and the task of reassembly is now underway. The car has been repainted using two pack products and the finish is very acceptable. The vehicle was painted in the club spraybooth and this comparatively new facility will undoubtedly be a major asset to club members for many years to come. Jeff and Pat spent many months preparing the car to undercoat stage and the final coats were applied by spraypainter Nathan Lamas who was very cooperative and very reasonable with his fee.We then moved on to our next stop, Downs Steam in Drayton. This organisation is made up of a mixture of volunteers from many walks of life. Some have a trade background which is extremely useful in the restoration of the various items of rolling stock while others come from different backgrounds and some of these people have been instrumental in procuring various government grants and sponsorship.Overall, Downs Steam have a museum that is going ahead in leaps and bounds and they will have a working steam engine in the foreseeable future. I was very sceptical about their $12 morning tea but was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed many of the delicious treats their chef and his helpers had prepared. The last stop was at Malcolm and Katie Burgess’ place where Malcolm is making excellent progress on a 29 Pontiac. Some of the running gear for this project came from deceased member Norm Giltrow’s very original sedan. Malcolm is building a utility and from what I can gather, this vehicle came from a family property. He has recently purchased some more 29 Pontiac gear from former club member Alan Achilles and we may see a tourer in the future.Mal has a lot of other stuff including stationery engines and a tractor or two as well as a small Dodge truck of the early sixties. You can’t help noticing how talented he is with any of the work he completes. He works in an engine reconditioning shop and we have been invited to look at some of the equipment in this workshop in the future.Pat Murphy

The dining carriage was where we had morning tea. There was a photo of the Lady MacGregor in the carriage as well.

Prior to heading to Lismore, Jeff had both bays of the workshop occupied.

The correct lifting technique being demonstrated.

He spent a lot of time getting the springs even and changing the angle of the diff & propellor shaft.

Channel 7 WeekenderA team from the Channel 7 program Weekender visited our club as part of a program centred around the Leyburn Sprints. They began by doing a few shots of some of our vehicles and an interview in the carpark was conducted.

Members who were able to be present were Peter and Eleanor McGovern 27 EssexTrevor and Judy Hoffmann 26 DodgeBob and Marian Chapman 57 FordBill Fischer 68 MustangGeorge and Barbara Wilkinson 72 MonaroDavid Liffin 76 Mercedes BenzPat, Lynne and Max Murphy 34 Chev

The film crew seemed interested in the Cox Chev which has now been painted and we then drove in convoy to Wyreema where we looked at the stage curtain in their historic hall. The hall was opened in 1911 and the curtain was hand painted in that era. It depicts many advertisements from businesses of the early days in Toowoomba and was restored in about 2000.

The Bull and Barley Inn at Cambooya was our lunch destination. It’s a beautiful old pub and we enjoyed lunch there. The food was quite good but the service was a bit slow. Here Trevor Hoffmann was interviewed about the restoration of his Dodge which was completed approximately thirty years ago. Trevor still has some photographs of various stages of the restoration.

Our final destination was Greenmount where the crew filmed a number of items of interest as well as the grave of Jack Slattery on whom Steele Rudd modelled one of his characters “Cranky Jack”.David Liffin also did an interview in the front seat of his Merc.It all sounds like an interesting day but the downside was we had to retrace our steps a number of times to get good film footage. The program goes to air on 25th September at 5:30pm and after spending the day filming, we may get four minutes of usable film.

About 15 years ago Ferne casually said one day that she would like an MG.Ferne had been involved in motor sport during her teenage years and tagged along with the Geogans, Leo and Pete, and that crowd. She raced a Mini Cooper S at Lakeside as well as having a friend who had a red MGB with a special rack for a surfboard on top. They both enjoyed the surf scene in their bikinis on the Gold Coast. Incidentally the bikinis never got wet.I had a friend who had a rather beat up MGB his daughter had brought back from England with her and was wanting to sell. I bought the black MGB and quietly put it into the garage at home without her knowledge, and told her her Christmas present was out in the shed. Thus started our MG collection.I figured that if she could have one then I should also have one and purchased my MGB GT but before I get on to that I had her MG repainted pearl blue over black and on the front bonnet and boot lid a friend of mine signed it off as ‘Spanish Lace’. Those of you who are old enough know the song. Ferne, incidentally, is of Spanish descent with a Gypsy background thus she is an intriguing lady. So much for that.

Our love affair with MGs

The Polishers Rag ~ Celebrating 40 Years ~ DARLING DOWNS VETERAN & VINTAGE MOTOR CLUB Page 9

Our love affair with MGs

son Steve and wife Kath and the four kids came over and stayed with us and on the Saturday Steve tried his hand at track racing. This was his first time on the track and he did exceptionally well and by the end of the day was only seconds behind me. Grandson David (10) was totally absorbed by the goings on and became my pit crew #1 - putting the bonnet up at the end of each run and checking oil and water for the next run. We had a great weekend with our family.Hayley and Amanda came over on Sunday and when we arrived home Hayley was helping me unload Niddy from the trailer when she asked the inevitable question - “Poppy, can I have a drive of Niddy?” Up to the grape paddock, Hayley driving, where she began practicing her four wheel drifts. We were both severely scolded by mum and Ferne for cutting up the turf. Photos were taken of the tracks and Hayley proudly displayed them to her school friends. Will I be buying another black MG?Our current stable of MGs consists of 1947 TC, 1954 TF, 1956 Magnette, 1965 MGB GT and Ferne’s shopping trolley, a modern MGF.National meets became the highlight of the MG calendar and we attended a number of such events. Nationals are held over the Easter weekend and can be in any state of Australia. In Tasmania I have driven on historic Baskerville and held the steering wheel of Fangio’s car that is on display. Just digressing a little bit, I entered the 1908 Bayard in the hill climb at Wakefield Park, Goulburn, and attained the slowest time ever recorded. I have the cup to prove it.Because I enjoyed the track work I eventually fitted a modified motor to Niddy and did all the things to make her a full race car. It was a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’.

Some of the achievements over the years have been:

2000: National Meet – King Edward Park, Newcastle Hill Climb Class N — 1st Motorkhana — 3rd

2004: National Meet – Morgan Park, Warwick Sprints — 1st Motorkhana — 3rd

2005: National Meet – Hunter region, Maitland Hill Climb Class O — 1st Motorkhana — 1st

2007: National Meet – Gold Coast, Mt Cotton Hill Climb Class O — 2nd Motorkhana — 1st

Niddy sits in the shed now in full race trim and rarely goes on the road. At times I fit the road tyres and go for a run but clearance is a problem. Maybe one day I will de-tune her and put her back to her former glory as a beautiful icon of a bygone era. The magic of the MG badge and the time of dominant British sports cars will live on.

Motor Sport. The greatest game of all.

Rob Callow.

In 1995, historic Leyburn was being re-organised and we both decided to run in the inaugural event. It was interesting when they announced that Ferne was lining up at the starting point in Spanish Lace. Her MG was seriously fast and she soon gained a reputation as the fast lady in Spanish Lace. She obtained her level 3 speed licence with CAMS and was competing with the men at MG events. We both joined the MG Car Club of Qld. Ferne was invited to drive in the Parade of Champions at Willow Bank raceway. Her passenger was to be Craig Lowndes but she ended up with Larry Perkins. Peter Brock was a friend of hers and would often catch up with her at Willow Bank.At the MG Nationals she came fifth out of 13 in the Hill Climb at King Edward Park in Newcastle. Her MG won first at the same event as we dually entered the event with yours truly driving.

Ferne eventually felt she had had enough and at the big weekend at Willow Bank decided to quit driving. Not long after that she sold her MG to a cousin. Rumor has it that I sold it on her as she was catching up to me. Not true. She has now hung up her hot pink and blue driving suit and multi pink helmet and does more sedate things like making quilts and supporting me at race days. Her Pink Panther image came to an end, which in a way saddened me as I was always proud of her on the track and her keeping a lot of the blokes honest. As previously stated, I bought a Mark 1 MGB GT which became our rally car and on many occasions, with the G packed to the roof (Ferne’s things), we would set off on MG events anywhere from home to Tasmania. How reliable can a car be? The Brits have often been knocked by the ‘other cars’ but how many of these could be driven to a race track or hill climb - unloaded, tyres pumped up to 50psi and a little bit of secret rocket fuel added to the fuel tank, thrashed all weekend and then tyres down, load up and sedately driven home without any problems?‘Niddy’ as she affectionately became known (because of number plate NID 380) was to become our mainstay rally car and little Hayley would often be strapped into the tiny back seat for a day’s outing. Is it any wonder Hayley loves cars? For as long as I can remember both she and Amanda have found a seat somewhere in one of our cars.Recently I joined the Historic Race Car Club of Qld and now compete against other makes of race cars. I am not sure how long I will continue racing, but for those of you who have never been on the track, the adrenalin rush is hard to explain, and those of you who have been will know what I mean.

Just recently - like about the end of February - the HRCCQ held a TTT day at Morgan Park Raceway, Warwick. My eldest

Classic momentsEpsode 1...”The 1958 Hillman Minx”The year was 1977 and I was working for a motorcycle workshop as general gofer and dogsbody earning a pittance. Out back of the shop was the usual pile of detritus and old parts chucked away over the years. I had just got my licence so was eager to join the rest of the motoring fraternity driving the highways and byways. While tidying up the pile of junk out the back of the bike shop I came across this old bomb and, let’s face it, it was not a pretty sight. After some haggling with the boss and $150 later I was the proud owner of my 1958 Hillman Minx.I took it home, cleaned, polished and preened it, and soon after the ugly duckling began to look a little more respectable. I began driving it around town, showing off to all my friends, and was surprised to find that they liked it and thought it cool and a classic — though it was only 20 years old at the time. This uplifted my spirits a bit and I began to grow fond of the old thing. There was lots to love about the Hillman. It had no seat belts and had bench seats so was great for the drive-in movies and parking. Something that younger people will probably not know about except from the internet. It had a map reading light and a full set of Smith gauges to show you how the motor was running. The body and trim was in good condition and the two tone paint of green and white was well matched to the red interior and the chrome trim both inside and out gave nice line and detail. It was a 1390cc engine with a 4 speed on the column gear change. The steering wheel was huge and you sat down underneath it, so the wheel was almost flat in front of your chest. It had 15 inch tyres and rolled along at a steady pace. With low gearing, the pickup was not so bad for its age. It kept up with small modern cars of the time around town. On the highway though it was slow and had a tough time climbing hills, having to change down often. Also the body roll was terrible, giving the impression that it would roll over quite easily. Although it never did it still felt unsafe. The one thing that always turned me off was the view of the front of the car. To me it always looked depressed, the way the grill curved down at the edges, like it had a sad grin.Of course a $150 car will usually have its problems and it was not long after the first of many breakdowns occurred. On a night drive to a friend’s party the car just stopped dead in the middle of the road. A passing motorist stopped to help and we found a wire had broken on the coil. So it was a small repair that only took an hour to find in the pitch darkness, and two minutes to fix.The next things to cause trouble were the gear linkages. A month later I limped home stuck in second gear. Friends and family tried to fix it and finally after removing the inspection plate on the car floor we found the linkages were beyond repair. So when changing gears I now had to move the gear shift and jiggle the change arm on the gearbox to select first and third. Then the brakes started to play up and it was very hard to stop. I had to use the handbrake to help. Then the motor began to overheat and soon after began to cease even after short drives, and I had to stop for a while for the motor to cool down before I could continue. So I would drive the car this way to work and back trying to save the money to get it repaired.Next door to my work was a body repairer and they had a car they wanted to sell, so after striking a deal, a trade off was done and I became the owner of a 1962 Mini. I had gone up in the world. Or so I thought, but that’s another story.

Cheers... Catrina Faye.

Hi there David,My Hillman SuperMinx is a 1963 model and has done about 54,000 miles. The speedo cable broke on my last run up to Tairo. It is a full imported from England and is in fair, driveable condition. It could do with a make over...a repaint and a refit of the interior. The car has had extensive repairs done on the electrics, brakes and cooling system in the last 14 mths. The car is complete and includes original jack and starter handle. Also workshop manual.REPAIRS:Cooling system...all new hoses...reconditioned water pump with new bearing...repairs to heater demister (still may require some attention).Electrics...by Craig Taylor...new starter motor...reconditioned generator...wiring harness refitted and Quartz Halogen bulbs and relays...all works very well...new points, plugs, distributor cap, new rotor button, new coil and plug leads.Brakes...by Brakeland...reconditioned, master cylinder and front wheel slave cylinders...all stainless steel....every thing works well...very well.Clutch...by Brakeland...reconditioned master cylinder and slave cylinder...all stainless steel...every thing works well.About the car itself well it is in mostly original condition except for a Holden carby and quartz halogen head lamp bulbs with relays fitted by Craig Taylor during the harness refit. The car runs on the highway very well and will keep up...around town it is a bit heavy in the clutch (standard) and the steering...but you soon get used to that ...the steering is tight. Gearbox good...Motor running well but has some oil leaks and uses a little water from time to time - due to the nature of the engineering of the car. There is some rust not anything great but needs attention.4 on the floor, door to door carpet, heater demister, vent, power boosted brakes, 1592 cc HC engine, workshop manual, original jack and starter handle. The car would need very little for roadworthy, so I will sell it for $4,200 without or $4,500 with roadworthy. There are a lot of spare parts as well...a complete motor and auto gearbox (Borg Warner 3 speed standard for this model) auto tailshaft and harmonic balancer. The car is insured with Shannons for $5,000 agreed value.Catrina Faye0746134237

Woodgrain dash and trim

I have recently been involved in a paint job on Jeff Cox’s 1940 Chev sedan. One of the problems we faced was simulating the woodgrain on the dash and window trim. The 1940 sales brochure showed the dash as a two tone woodgrain finish. Written below is the method we used but I would say that it’s not the only way to complete the job. We received some advice from Len Richardson and Stewart Westerman who also have achieved pleasing results but may have used different methods.

● Paint all of the parts in a base coat. We used the two pack system and painted most parts in a yellow ochre/ brown colour. For the glovebox and speedo trim, we used a cream colour. After the paint had cured, we rubbed it with a scotchbrite to achieve a flat finish.

● To achieve the woodgrain effect, we used artist’s acrylic which is available in tubes similar to a toothpaste tube. We firstly began by using foam to apply this product but couldn’t achieve a consistent coating. We then used an old brush and painted it on roughly and continued to use the brush to spread it. The first panel was done in the sun and the acrylic dried fairly quickly while continually brushing. The woodgrain effect was quite striking but there were some dark blobs so we took a damp rag and rubbed it all off.

● Next we thinned the acrylic with a little water and repeated the process with very acceptable results. We used a burnt umber colour on the yellow ochre and a raw umber colour on the cream.

● Next day, we again used a fine scotchbrite to rub the acrylic which tended to level out the surface and lighten the woodgrain where it seemed too heavy.

● After a couple more days, we coated the surfaces with clear that included some flatting medium as full gloss colours are not really suitable for vehicle interiors.Pat Murphy

Coming events

Upcoming RalliesSaturday September 18: Carnival of Flowers Floral Classic Show & ShineThis event has been organised by Jeff Brown and David Liffin for the past three or four years. It’s a great opportunity for us to display our vehicles to a very appreciative public. There are excellent trophies available for the various sections and money raised from the entry fees goes to charity.

Sunday September 26: Street displayLast year some of our vehicles as well as a number of others put on a creditable display on the last Sunday of the Carnival. The vehicles were displayed in Ruthven Street although the event is changing to an adjacent street this time. As last year was the first time this event was staged, there could have been more vehicles.

The organisers seem to want to make it into an excellent event and many other attractions such as bands have been arranged. There is no entry fee and this will be an excellent place for a sizeable club promotion.

Sunday October 17: Warren Klein Memorial RallyEven though Collen will be tied up with his auction on the 9th October, he has consented to holding the rally to honour his father and former life member Warren. He hopes both his sisters will also be involved.

I have visited Collen at Millmerran and am amazed by the huge number of vehicles Warren collected in his lifetime. Even if you are not in a position to acquire another vehicle, it’s worth the trip out to look at the collection. The Kleins will be keeping quite a few vehicles as well as auctioning many others.

Saturday October 30: Southbrook SS CentenarySouthbrook State School has invited us to put on a display for their centenary celebrations. More information in the next newsletter.

Sunday November 14: Harvest RallyThis is the oldest rally conducted by our club with the first event occurring in the first year, 1970. From what I can gather, this event has been organised each year since then so it would be a great chance to keep the 40th anniversary spirit alive.

We were last rally directors a couple of years ago and at that time, we invited other members to organise one rally. Many of these runs were very successful as each set of organisers had fresh ideas and new places of interest to visit. If you would like to help out please advise us. Most rallies are competition runs and to abide by our current status, we need to make these competitions more than just a quiz. To my way of thinking, events such as timed runs, consumption tests, observation runs, other rallies involving clues, treasure hunts etc are acceptable.

Our club is also hosting the Queensland Historic Motoring Council Rally this year and we will need some help to organise this event. In consultation with others, we have had initial ideas on where to go and have made a number of enquiries regarding catering etc.
