Pollution solutions

Page 2: Pollution solutions. Reactive solutions These are solutions which happen after the fact. People see a problem, wait for the problem to happen then try.

Reactive solutions

• These are solutions which happen after the fact. People see a problem, wait for the problem to happen then try and fix the problem instead of preventing it.

Dilution Solution to Pollution

Dilution Solution to Pollution

• The idea here is if the pollution is not concentrated that means it will have less of an effect. So to move pollution and waste to a place where it can be Diluted and thus make it less of a problem.

• This often just exports the real problems

Reclamation

• Here what is done is a reactive solution to the pollution problem.

• Pollution will contaminate until it becomes such a large scale problem or until industry is done with an area. Afterward everything is “put back to the way to was”

• Mines often do reclamation of land after they are finished.

• Harbour clean is another example

Cuyahoga River

• A Reclamation of a river• Ohio river so polluted it

actually caught fire…………..9 TIMES

• After the last fire people were so tired of the problem they decided to get together and clean it up.

Polluter pays

• This is how the government deals with most of the pollution problems

• The idea here is if an industry or person pollutes they have to pay for the clean up and harm they did to the environment.

• It is also a reactive solution

Proactive Solutions

• This means we see a problem, know it is coming and choose to prevent that problem as opposed to reacting to what is happening.

Prevention of pollutants being used

• CFC’s were found to deplete the Ozone layer so instead of fixing the Ozone layer we got ride of CFC’s

• This is a proactive solution to stop the things which cause the problem from happening.

Recycling

• Reusing the materials we already have as opposed to scrapping them for new materials.

Renewable energy

• Instead of using stored energy like fossil fuels we can use energy directly where they got it from.

• This means Solar, Wind, and Hydro• Canadian homes and industry is run of

50% Hydro.• Fossil Fuels and Nuke can be used when

these are intermittent• Smart Grid.
