POLLY SHORTS ACADEMY / AKADEMIE

A SHORT OVERVIEW / ‘N KORT OORSIG

Polly Shorts Academy is a Home School based on the Impak program. Home Schooling

education is fast becoming parents first choice to educate their children. We provide educa-

tion to learners from gr. R to gr.12. Small classes make it possible for one on one interaction

between student and educator.

At Polly Shorts Academy we see each learner as an individual. We strive to prepare each

learner to achieve their full potential. The small classroom environment makes it possible to

understand each learner’s specific needs.

As part of our curriculum we offer Kwanda Kinetics on Fridays. This is a group-based per-

ceptual-motor program with a preventing, improving and/or therapeutic nature and is pre-

sented by a registered Kinderkinetici. This program is designed in order to develop a child’s

motor skills and optimize a child’s perceptual-motor skills. It also encourages creativity as

well as proper brain development and aims to prevent educational shortfall, thus helping a

child to reach his/her full potential.

We offer extra mural activities which include golf lessons, drama lessons, guitar lessons and

computer and reading programmes.

Polly Shorts Academy also have after care facilities.

By Polly Shorts Akademie vind onderrig vir graad R tot graad 12 leerders plaas volgens

Impak as onderrigprogram.

in hoofstroomonderrig.

perseptuele vaardighede in.

The value of Remedial Educa-tion

Remedial programs are designed to close the gap between what a student knows and what he’s expected to know. They often target reading or math skills.

Many students require extra help. For example, only 35 percent of fourth graders are proficient readers (reading at grade level), according to the most recent National Assessment of Education Progress. (USA)

The possible causes of poor perfor-mance in class:

Memory: Individual capacity of memorising facts and figures.

Understanding: Lack of comprehen-sion — he does not follow what he reads.

Presentation: Finds difficulty in expressing views - vocabulary is not sufficient.

Knowledge Gap: Incomplete cover-age units in the previous class - long absence.

Parental background: Socio-economic status; education

Parental attitude: Indifference of parents towards studies; over-expectation.

School Based: Lack of suitable equip-ment and environment in school-overcrowded class.

Medium of instruction: Language problem.

Physical factors: Poor eyesight; poor audibility; illness and other prob-lems.

Individual factors: Good in oral tests but does not prepare notes and does not do home work regularly; not sincere in studies; very anxious but is unable to concentrate on studies; lacks self confidence; inferiority feeling; fear of failure; wants compa-ny of students who avoid classes; emotional instability.

Teacher based: Lack of confidence in teacher; lack of time at teacher’s disposal; faulty method of teaching; does not encourage student partici-pation in class; inadequate home assignments and problems for prac-tice; improper way of correction of homework and of guidance to stu-dents at appropriate time and stage.; knowledge of the subject is not thor-ough; unable to clarify difficult con-cept; lacks in expression; unable to provide secure and affectionate cli-mate in classroom and lack of under-standing and acceptance for each individual child.

If a teacher is able to do justice to his primary responsibility then it may safely be presumed that the teaching profession has a bright future in store for sure.

Valentynsmark gehou, waar elke klas

“Behind every young child who believes in himself is a parent who be-lieved first” ML Jackson

Raising a child to follow God is a great

responsibility, and here at Polly Shorts

Academy , Christian values are close to

our hearts. It builds a child's character

and teaches your child to be a person

of worth.

Children spend a big part of their day

at school, and the impact a teacher can

have on a child’s life is enormous.

Therefore, a Christian teacher is an

important role-model. Through our

interaction your child is taught to be

honest, helpful, to forgive and most

importantly your child learns to glorify

God. Everyday we try to teach the kids

how Scripture applies to our daily

lives.

In today’s fast and uncertain world, we

can’t do it alone, and urge you as par-

ents to be actively involved in your

child's life... not only by encouraging

them to perform academically, but you

must model Christian values, you must

pray for your child (and for our

school). Only then can we continue to

transform little people into honoura-

ble grown-ups.

DIE WAARDE VAN CHRISTELIKE ONDERWYS

THE VALUE OF CHRISTIAN-BASED EDUCA-TION

5

en hier, by Polly Shorts Akademie is

‘n Christelike

onderwyser is as’t ware ‘n belangrike

rolmodel.

in eerbare volwassenes.

OUR SENIOR CAMP / ONS SENIOR KAMP

Dit is wonderlik hoe aanpasbaar kinders is, veral as dit by kompetisies kom. Hulle spanwerk was wonderlik. Die laaste aktiwiteit was natuurlik “Stalk the lantern”. Ligte af was so 10 uur se kant, maar natuurlik was daar baie gelag en gespeel tot so 12 uur. Donderdag Hulle is 5:30 wakker gemaak. Terug by die kamp was ontbyt bedien. Aandete en poeding was ‘n treffer. “Minute to win it” was groot pret vir die spanne. Judy Viljoen

OUR SENIOR CAMP / ONS SENIOR KAMP

It was a privilege and a wonderful experience to spend some time with our learners. It was a pleasant

experience seeing the other side of the learners whilst in a relaxed environment with their friends.

Here follows a short summary of the camp proceedings:

Wednesday

The learners were divided in to 3 teams. Most learners were not in teams with their daily friends and

had to learn to work with new team mates. It is wonderful to see how adaptable our learners are,

especially with reference to being competitive, their teamwork was wonderful.

The kids started with activities after they were divided into various teams, the first activity was to

choose a name for their teams and to create a slogan for their teams. At last lunch, all learners were

very hungry and treated with burgers and salad.

The kids had to participate in some more activities and then, eventually, after a long-long wait, they

could swim in the river and row the rowboats! Some of the kids were scared of going into the river,

especially after they were told that there are “sharks and crocks” in the river but after being con-

vinced of the safety of the water they had a marvellous time and then the battle was to get them out

of the river.

The kids lined like one man after the camp leader blew her whistle. They were given 20 minutes to

shower. Dinner was followed by a marshmallow braai over the campfire and then, it was time for

“Stalk the lantern”. The kids then tried to get dressed in dark clothes so as not so be seen easily,

they even painted their faces with mud. Delicious hot chocolate awaited the kids at their destination.

It was eventually the end of the day, lights off at 10 o’clock but, as expected a lot of playing and

laughing went on into the midnight hours.

Thursday

The kids were rounded up out of bed around half past five, they had to get ready to exercise and a

quick jog , then had some breakfast back at the camp and then the fun continued.

Each team had to build a raft which they had to float on the river. First the planning and then put-

ting the rafts together, two of the rafts worked well but sadly one team’s raft fell apart whilst sailing.

The teams had to break down their rafts and pack all away neatly.

Then it was time for fun and only fun, swimming in the river and zipping down the zip line!

Lunch was served which at this stage was a welcome and required treat

After lunch the kids had to play soccer, it was however too hot and the learners were moved indoors

where they played “stack the cups” and table tennis on the “stoep”. Hereafter the kids could cool

down in the river. They showered and then were allowed to start packing their suitcases for the fol-

lowing day’s departure.

By this time all the kids were hungry and exhausted, dinner was served and dessert was a huge bo-

nus.

After dinner, the teams played “minute to win it”. This was a huge hit and all the kids enjoyed it. The

winning team received marshmallows which they could enjoy with their hot chocolate. Thereafter all

the kids begged to play “Stalk the Lantern” to which the facilitators agreed and they all were filled

with excitement. The kids were given ten minutes to get dressed in dark clothes and to prepare them-

selves for the event, all enjoyed it.

Hot Chocolate was waiting for the kids at the end of the event, by this time they were all exhausted

and ready for bed.

Friday

The kids had to do some exercises before breakfast, the ones who liked, could for one last time go for

a swim in the river.

Thereafter the kids had to clean up and pack up for departure, this is when the search for shoes and

clothes started.

Longing to go home they could not wait to get home and tell their parents what a great experience

the camp was. It was not long after the traveling home started for the kids to fall asleep.

A special thank you to all the parents, teachers and Gavin Penkin and his team who ensured that this

adventure was unforgettable.

Polly Shorts

Academy / Akademie

Polly Shorts Academy, founded in January 2013 by Jaqueline Freise.

Our Mission

Polly Shorts refers to perseverance to be showcased by the teacher and taught to the learner with learning difficulties, achieving educational excellence and reaching indi-vidual potential through creating a desired learning environment. Polly Shorts refers to the steepest hill in the Comrades mara-thon and encompasses the following at-tributes: Perseverance, Camaraderie, Dedication, Selflessness, Ubuntu

____________

TER AFSLUITING / IN CONCLUSION

Discipline is the backbone of any successful organisation no matter what the nature of its busi-

ness. As with the uniforms, I like to ask each parent to assist us with discipline and, in so ensure

that children perform well under given guidelines and boundaries in which they have to func-

tion and perform. Too often we see how children underperform due to lack of discipline and

parents not ensuring discipline on their behalf and, in so ill-disciplined learners not reaching

their full potential.

I lastly like to make use of this opportunity to thank all the timeous paying parents, we can only

deliver teaching to our learners and give service to our parents if we receive payments on time

every month. It however saddens me to say that we have a few parents not paying on time and I

urge you to ensure we receive timeous payments. The school has seen many non paying par-

ents who have left the school without making the required payments for services delivered. I am

in the process in following legal routes trying to recover these fees.
