Dear Parents and Students;

This Career and Educational Planning Guide is intended to assist students as they make plans for a career that will lead to a rewarding and enjoyable future. We urge students and parents to work with the school faculty to review the information in this book in preparation for creating the students’ personal plan of study. Each year you will annually revisit the student’s personal plan of study. The personal plan of study is the student’s unique plan of study which outlines courses that align with future education and career goals. When students see the relevancy of high school course work to what they aspire to in their future, they are more apt to take school more seriously and enroll in more rigorous courses. Remember course selection is very important and schedule changes can be very difficult.

Parent, please familiarize yourself with the abundance of information in this book and actively participate with your school and student in creating and reviewing your child’s personal plan of study. Students rank parents as the most influential people in their lives. Challenge your students to set high standards, select courses and school activities which directly help them achieve personal and career goals, work hard to achieve these goals and attend classes daily. Embrace the power of your influence and genuinely engage in educational pursuits with your child(ren).

We look forward to partnering with you for a successful year. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Mr. Alan Meyer Mrs. Becky Arway Mr. Kyle Ross High School Counselor K-8 School Counselor

A+ SCHOOLS PROGRAM

Polo High School is privileged to have been designated as an A+ High School by the State of Missouri. We are pleased to offer the opportunity for our graduates to continue their education at a two-year college while receiving financial assistance from the State. Benefits for A+ Students: • A student graduating with A+ status may be eligible for two years of tuition grants to attend any accredited

public Missouri community college or vocational/technical school as a full-time student. Tuition benefits may cover tuition and general fees.

• An A+ student may be eligible for scholarships from four-year colleges and universities. • The tuition grants may be available to the A+ student up to four years after high school graduation. • Students graduating from a two-year school may be eligible for transfer scholarships to four-year colleges

and universities. A+ Schools Program requirements: • Attend an A+ School for six consecutive semesters prior to graduation (grades 10-12). • Graduate with a cumulative unweighted/unrounded GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. • Graduate with at least a 95% cumulative attendance record for grades 9-12. • Perform 50 hours of unpaid tutoring to other students in the Polo R-VII School District. • Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoid the use of alcohol and unlawful drugs. • Apply for non-pay back scholarships by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). • Register with the Selective Service System (males only within 30 days of their 18th birthday). • Class of 2015 and beyond must score proficient or advanced on the Algebra I End of Course Exam. Recommendations for A+ students: • Sign up early in high school so there is time to complete the tutoring portion of the A+ requirements and

receive college and career information from the A+ Coordinator. Signing up early also allows the coordinator to monitor GPA and attendance.

• Enroll in the A+ Program even if planning to attend a four-year college or enter the workforce rather than attend college. The A+ Program is an opportunity for students to access additional education after high school; it does not obligate them to use the A+ tuition funds. The A+ benefits are available to A+ graduates up to four years after high school graduation or for six semesters, which may be extended if entering the military.

Opportunities for tutoring experiences include: • Summer School tutoring may be preapproved with the A+ Coordinator. • Before or after school tutoring may be preapproved with the A+ Coordinator. • PALS (Panthers Assisted Learning Services) Program is offered to Juniors and Seniors as a scheduled class

period, in line with the current TA (Teachers Assistant) program. See the A+ Coordinator if interested. • Job Shadowing is offered to Juniors and Seniors and may be used for up to 25% (12.5 hours) of the tutoring

hour requirement. See the A+ Coordinator if interested. For additional information about the A+ Schools Program, contact Mrs. Becky Arway, the A+ Coordinator.

The high school administration realizes that an effective educational program is one that provides opportunities for student learning both within the classroom and beyond the traditional classroom and school day. These expanded opportunities are viewed as educational options to supplement the regular program. Dual Credit The purpose of dual credit is to provide high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Polo High School offers several opportunities for students to earn college credit through Missouri Valley College and Wentworth College. What is dual credit? Dual credit is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors who are capable of meeting an increased challenge to earn college credit through select high school courses. Students earn both high school and college credit for these courses. Are there any requirements for a student to enroll in dual credit classes? Yes. Students must be a junior or senior and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Other requirements such as a minimum ACT score may be required. Are there additional costs associated with dual credit courses? Yes. Each course has a fee set by the school in which they are earning the college credit. Costs range from

$60-95 per credit hour. Additional fees may apply. What are the benefits of taking dual credit courses? Students have the opportunity to earn college credit at a reduced cost. The college credit earned in high school will transfer to most colleges. What dual credit courses are offered at Polo High School? Course selection varies from semester to semester depending on the course available. A list of the courses that has been offered in the past can be found on the following page. For more information and to find out what course are being offered this year, check with the counselors in the Counseling and Career Center.

ACADEMIC LAB OPTIONS

Academic labs will have the three options listed below available to students.

1.) Study Skills: This course is provided for students who need additional support organizing and maintaining their work in school. Extra time is allotted allowing students to finish assignments and study for other classes. This option must be accompanied by a signed contract of obligation and will only be allowed thru counselor or administration approval. At any time in the semester a student may be removed from this course for not using it as it is intended.

2.) Credit Recovery: This course is provided for students who need credit recovery in order to stay on track with their graduating cohort. Credit recovery is not tied to regular seat hours. The Credit Recovery Program curriculum will be delivered through computer-based instructional software that will have specific rules of conduct for the program. Students who demonstrate proficiency standards after working through the instructional software program will earn credit in that particular subject. Once you have completed all recovery credits, the student will remain until the end of the semester under the guidelines of option 1: Study Skills. Upon completion of the semester, grades will be reviewed for the purpose of the next semester’s Academic Lab enrollment. This option will be upon the recommendation of the counselor.

3.) Online Course of Study: This course is provided for students that need a specific flexibility in their schedule to follow their personal plan of study based upon the College and Careers Readiness Standards. Each course will be taken as an entire semester package in order to accrue the mandated seat time required by the State of Missouri. A separate course appendix for computer-based instruction can be found in the Career and Educational Planning Guide (see page 87). Courses taken that have an End of Course exam tied to them will not be allowed in this option (credit recovery excluded). There is an appeals process for any extenuating circumstances that might deem it necessary for an EOC course to be taken in the computer-based format. The process would begin in the Career Center and then move to the Administrative level.

CAREER PPLLAANNNNIINNGG PURPOSE OF CAREER PATHS AND CLUSTERS Career Paths Career paths are clusters of occupations/careers grouped according to participants’ interests and talents or skills. All paths include a variety of occupations that require different levels of education and training. Thus, career paths provide a plan for all students, whatever their interests, abilities, talents, or desired levels of education. Selecting a career path provides a student with an area of FOCUS, along with FLEXIBILITY and a VARIETY of ideas to pursue. The focus of career paths is on helping students choose a career path, not a specific occupation. Selecting a career path is not a lifelong commitment; it is a place to begin focusing one’s energies. As students take different courses and learn more about themselves and careers, they will probably change career paths. Students who understand the career paths concept will be aware that there are a variety of other related possibilities if the first path no longer fits them. If different career paths become more interesting, the students can reevaluate plans, make appropriate decisions, and revise their high school plans as necessary.

Benefits Deciding on a career path can assist you in exploring your interests and preparing for your future. The intent is not for you to decide on a specific occupation for the rest of your life, but to select a career path into which you can begin directing your energies. Identifying a career path can help you in selecting school courses, activities, and part-time employment. It can also help guide your participation in job shadowing, career exploration and internships. A career path choice is not a permanent commitment. As you have new experiences, you learn new things about yourself and may decide to change career paths. If you decide on a different career path to explore, you should discuss it with your counselor and adjust your future course selections in accordance with your new career exploration. Career Exploration Assessments Polo High School students complete career exploration assessments starting in the 8thgrade. This is a way the student can identify an initial career path choice. Counselors will then use this information to assist students in making course selections and developing a five-year plan. The PLAN test is administered in the 10thgrade. It provides an inventory that will indicate which career clusters interest the student. This will help the student update his/her personal plan of study and career path. CHOOSING A CAREER PATH OR CLUSTER 1. Identify your interests, abilities, and talents. 2. Identify the career path or cluster that relates to your interests, abilities, and talents. 3. Explore occupations in those career paths or clusters. 4. Decide how much education you want to receive after high school. 5. Develop a personal plan of study by selecting courses and co-curricular activities that relate to your career educational and career goal. 6. If undecided regarding a career path or cluster, choose courses from different career areas to give you a better idea of your interests.

Individual Planning Vocabulary Guidance and Counseling

Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education August, 2011

a. Process: Missouri currently uses a 10 step process for the development of Programs of Study that is aligned with federal guidelines which includes creation of POS templates and secondary/post- secondary curriculum alignment. This process is currently under review at the state level.

b. Template: The model or form developed by schools that lists courses, occupations and additional learning opportunities to help students develop their personal plan of study. The completion of the POS template does not infer that the POS process has been completed.

6. Career Paths (6) Clusters (16) Career Pathways (78): A progressive framework to organize the world of work and career information. The framework provides the structure to assist students in understanding the world of work, and to organize course and co-curricular offerings in the school.

7. Missouri Connections: A free web-based career and educational planning resource to help Missouri citizens determine their career interests, explore occupations, establish education plans, develop job search strategies, and create résumés.

CHOICES AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

On-the-Job Training

Some occupations do not require training prior to employment; rather additional training and skills required beyond high school are provided by the employer.

Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is a three to four-year training program where you earn money while you learn, working on the job. You receive a license at the end of training. Examples of trades that use apprenticeships are bricklaying, jewelry making, electrical repair, etc.

Vocational/Technical School

Programs at these schools are generally from one month to four years in length. Examples of vocational technical programs include practical nursing, robotics, and some areas of business.

Community/Junior College

Community colleges offer two-year “degree” vocational training, associate degrees, or credit transfer to a college or university where you can pursue a bachelor’s degree. Most community colleges have an open enrollment policy for high school graduates and individuals with GEDs.

College/University

A bachelor’s degree requires approximately four years of college. A master’s degree usually requires one to two years of college beyond the bachelor’s degree. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required for about 20% of the occupations in the United States. Entrance requirements depend on the desired program/major.

Military

Training is available for many jobs while you are enlisted. You may also receive financial assistance for college, room and board, salary, and insurance benefits. High school graduation is required. Another consideration for students would be the military academies like West Point or University ROTC.

PPOOLLOO HHIIGGHH SSCCHHOOOOLL PROGRAM OF STUDY TEMPLATES BY CAREER CLUSTER

“What do you want to do after high school?” That is a question that is asked of our students a multitude of times over the course of their public school education. It’s a question that is not easily answered, due to the enormous number of possible post-secondary alternatives that are currently available to our students. Technological advances and global competition have transformed the nature of both education and work. Tomorrow’s jobs will require more knowledge and training, highly developed 21st Century Skills, technological skills, and more flexible workers than ever before. Our students need to be prepared for, and informed of, the reality of several job and career changes over the course of their lifetimes. They need to understand that they will have to continually update their knowledge and skills, which may require additional training and/or education. The Polo R-VII School District offers a wide array of courses and experiences to its students. As students review course offerings and activities, we hope to guide them in choosing coursework and experiences that are relevant to their future goals. In planning for post-secondary goals, students should start with examining where their own interests and talents lie. This can be accomplished in many different ways within the school district; researching middle and high school classes of interest, taking interest and skill inventories, participating in career fairs offered, and taking advantage of the many extra-curricular and enrichment activities available. The school district uses the Missouri Connections online program (www.missouriconnections.org) for interest assessments and to explore the variety of options students have beyond high school. Using the results of career assessments students create their personal plan of study for their high school years and beyond. School counselors, teachers and other district personnel, are available to guide students and parents in this important planning process. The planning process is critical to not only meeting graduation requirements, but also to taking the coursework that will ultimately lead to a successful post-secondary transition. The following program of study templates, serve as a guide, along with other career planning materials, to help students develop their personal plans of study. Courses listed within these program of study templates are recommended coursework only and should be individualized to meet each learner’s educational and career goals.

All students desiring to attend the Career Center probably will not be able to do so. The following factors are considered in selecting students for programs at the Career Center:

- Interest in the Career Center - Aptitude in the career and technical areas - Completion of the prerequisite courses - Good attendance record - Recommendation from the faculty - Good school citizenship - Counselor recommendation - Principal approval

The enrollment is limited; therefore, the selection process is competitive.

WHAT ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AND GRADES? Each career and technical education course carries from one to three units of high school credit. This credit is granted through the home school and will count toward graduation from the home school. Grades are sent from the Excelsior Springs Area Career Center to the home school and are recorded on permanent cumulative school records.

CREDIT WAIVER Pending approval by administration, students may waive a core credit at the completion of a two-year career and technical program or the Health Services or EMT-B program which are one-year programs.

- The waiver credit is based on need. - See your high school counselor or Career Center counselor for details.

CAREER SKILLS All Career Center students attending a one- or two- year program will receive training in soft skills (resume writing, interviewing techniques, and professionalism) in the Career Skills program. This training is part of all Career Center programs curriculum and is very important for securing employment after high school.

ASSESSMENTS Standardized tests are designed to give a common measure of students' performance. They help compare an individual's performance with the performance of a group of students from a given class, school, or school system. Since large numbers of students throughout the country take the same test, "standards" can be developed to show whether school programs are succeeding and how students are performing. Standardized achievement tests measure how much students have already learned about school subjects such as reading, math, language skills, spelling, or science. On the other hand, standardized aptitude tests measure your students' ability to learn in school. They measure verbal ability, mechanical ability, creativity, clerical ability, or abstract reasoning.

EXPLORE EXPLORE is an achievement test and interest survey that measures performance in math, English, reading and science reasoning, plus provides information about career interests. This is the entry point into ACT’s Educational Planning and Assessment System, and is followed by the PLAN and the ACT. Taking this assessment in the eighth grade helps students explore a broad range of options for their futures including planning high school courses, preparing for the ACT, and choosing a career path.

PLAN (Preliminary American College Testing Program) PLAN is a two-hour version of the ACT given in the fall to all Sophomores. The PLAN provides practice for the ACT. It includes tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. The test also provides a career interest inventory. It is a good tool for sophomores to use as they start planning for their post-secondary college and career options.

PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal and mathematics reasoning skills important for academic success in college. It serves three purposes: gives the student practice for the SAT I; is the first step in qualifying for scholarships sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and other scholarship programs; gives the student the opportunity to participate in the Student Search Service. This test is taken in the junior year for NMSQT qualification.

ASVAB (The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) The ASVAB measures students’ strengths and potential for future success. The ASVAB also provides career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors including college, vocational school, or a military career. This test is administered during the student’s junior year.

ACT (American College Testing Program) The ACT is a battery of four examinations in English, math, reading, and science reasoning, each of which yield separate scores measuring developed abilities. The test is required by many colleges as part of the application process for admission. Students are encouraged to begin taking the ACT during their junior year.

SAT I (Scholastic Aptitude Test) SAT I is a test used to predict student performance in college. Required by some schools as part of the application process, this three-hour test has two main sections—verbal and math. Students are encouraged to begin taking the SAT during their junior year.

TSA (Technical Skill Attainment) Technical Skill Attainment (TSA) is required by students who take 3 sequenced courses in an approved vocational program. When the student is in the 3rd or 4th year of the program then they are required to take a third party test. Each vocational program has different third party tests for students to take. For example, an Ag student taking Ag Science I, Ag Science II and any advanced AG class will be required to take a TSA Exam. The student with the instructor will decide upon a proper TSA Exam for the student.
