Zach spent his enlistment as a Corpsman, deploying multiple times to hostile territories. As the platoon "Doc," Zach had the massive responsibility of healing injuries and saving the lives of his comrades. The stresses of such a role threatened his own life. "The trauma, loss of life, the amount of loss of my men and civilians have contributed to severe PTSD and moral injury. I had the honor of serving with some of the most valiant, brave and honorable men I've ever known in some of the most traumatic, difficult and scary situations that the human condition could offer." - Zach Impastato After his service, Zach felt trapped in a state of hopelessness and despair, overwhelmed with his PTSD. Then, he learned of K9s For Warriors. He became convinced it was the program to restore himself due to the quality of training, education and support offered. He was paired with service dog Kelly. and soon found his way back to a life of hope and healing. "This program offers lifelong intrapersonal and extrapersonal tools with assistance from a dog.
