From Pastor Doug

Several years ago we became aware that our paraments were in need of replacing. They

were frayed and faded. We began to replace them. Or I should say, a few donors and the

WELCA organization began to replace them.

The task is now complete! On Easter Sunday we will see the white paraments, which

completes the series.

There are Christian symbols on the paraments. Some of the symbols will be clearly

understood. When we see the two fish and five loaves of bread, we will remember the feeding

of the 5,000. When we see the symbol for the 10 commandments, we will start trying to

remember the Commandments.

But some of the symbol we might need to be reminded of. Depending on the season of the

Church Year we may see these different words and symbols…

These letters appear to us to be i-h-s. In Greek they are the letters iota-eta-

sigma. These are the first three letters in Greek of the name Jesus. So this

symbol is a shortening of the name of our Savior.

This symbol of a fish with five Greek letters in it was a very

significant symbol for early Christians. The five Greek letters --

- iota-chi-theta-upsilon-sigma --- spells the word fish. Those

five letters are also an acrostic for “Jesus Christ, God’s Son,

Savior.” Early persecuted Christians knew that a person bearing the fish symbol was also a

follower of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, our Savior.

The letters P-A-X stand for peace. This symbol is on our Easter paraments.

There were those who thought peace came from the authority of Rome: the

Pax Romana. Christians declared that Jesus made peace for us by his death

on the cross. As St Paul said, “We have peace through Christ. This Easter we

will celebrate the Pax Christi.

Thank you to all who made our new paraments possible. We will see you all

in worship.

Caring for our Neighbors

“Your efforts are appreciated - Thank you!” to those who brought donations of non-perishable food items or cash for the annual Minnesota Food Share drive during the month of March. We will continue to accept non-perishable items in the CART for the YWCA Cass Clay during the month of April. This time every year (along with the arrival of spring!), we turn our attention to providing for the daily needs of people around the world with the assembly of Personal Care Kits. It is important that we receive the items needed for the kits during the month of April. They may be placed in the blue bin by the Church office: one (1) light weight bath size towel (between 20”x 40” & 27”x 52”, dark color recommended); two (2) bath-size bars of soap (4-5 oz. each), any brand, in their original wrappings; one (1) adult size toothbrush in its original packaging; one (1) sturdy comb; one (1) metal nail clipper. The Personal Care Kits will be assembled, packed and shipped, along with our quilts, to Lutheran World Relief during the month of May. The following message is posted on the Lutheran World Relief website:

“On behalf of the congregations and community, we thank the Lord Almighty and our Christian brothers and sisters who donated these items for which we have been in need of. We pray that God will continue to bless them in all their undertakings.” – Amed Kaimapoh of Calvary Lutheran Church in Freetown, Sierra Leone (West Africa) Finally, the need for bath-size bars of soap never ends. There is a blue bin by the Church office for these. Respectfully submitted by Jackie Jabens, Stewardship Rep

Parament Update: We [WELCA] have now completed purchasing a new set of paraments. Thank you for everyone’s participation in this project.

4. Roy and Lisa Sander purchased the pastor’s white stole in memory of Roy and Bev Sander. (2015)

Sometimes life is hard to understand. We face challenges and obstacles

that were never in our plans. Yet we can trust nothing

Is a surprise to God. He’s there to walk with us each step, Hold our hands, and guide us to all

the good He has for our lives. His love will be with us

Wherever we go.

Dearest Pontoppidan Family, There is a joy in friendship only God can give — and you’ve shown just how wonderful that can be! We deeply give thanks to each of you who walked this journey of cancer with our Daughter, Michelle Erickson and each of us. Your prayers, love and friendship helped the days pass with so many blessings that gave us strength. We are so proud of our Daughters courage, hope and strength as she dealt with each obstacle and treatment. She experienced God’s loving arms support her from the first day she was hospitalized. The peace she felt in her life helped us deal with each set back. Her motto was “Let your faith be stronger than your fear!” Special thanks to Pastor Doug for prayers and support. And to each of you for sharing your time, treasures and terrific self as you comforted us. We are truly blessed!

“Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.” Philippians 1:3
