Discrepancies in information. Antonio was the son of Lorenzo but which one?
Question whether Lorenzo 1603 was a brother of Antonio or his Father.
Was Joana G married to Lorenzo 1579 or Lorenzo 1603? Was she 40 or 20 when Antonio was
born?
See Juana Gomila – Mother of Lorenzo 1603? This genealogy references a source saying Juana
was married in 1602. If this is the case then a birth date for her of 1583 is believable.
Lorenzo Ponz Born 1603

6272. MENORCA HISTORY PONZ. Notes on the history of Majorca in 1228 and
of Menorca in 1287 to 1500.
In 1228, King James 1st (Jacques 1st) of Aragon, anxious to complete the reconquest
of his country and to find some outlet for trading with the Catalan traders, decided to
launch an offensive in the form of a crusade against the infidel Moors. With the
agreement of the Pope, the assistance of Barcelonian sailors who provided boats and
their provisions, and the help of the rich Catalan nobles, he would try to seize
Majorque from the Moors.
His forces began to gather, coming from all parts of Aragon. From PAU came two of
James' principal lieutenants, Raymond and William de Moncade, and from Roussillon
came 25 various ships including one with three bridges for the transport of the horses.
The fleet started from Collioure directed by Nino Xanxo who was to serve as fleet
commander of the expedition.
Finally, the day of the great invasion arrived: there were 155 vessels, 15 000 men and
1 500 riders which took to the sea on September 1 1229. Landing in Majorque in the
bay of Santa Ponsa, between Andratx and Palma. In his impatience to do battle, James
did not take time to land all his armour. But thousands of Moors awaited them, and on
September 12 in the first contact, the invaders lost 500 men. Better prepared, the
following day, the fleet commander ( Nino Xanxo) with only 300 riders, massacred
500 soldiers and 100 riders of the enemy.
After a three-month's siege the Catalan troops took the town of Palma where the
Moslems had taken refuge. In a few days, the towns of Bunyola, Artà and Manacor
are taken; and shortly the rest of the island was occupied. In 1235, the island of Ibiza
East was taken in its turn. Although annexed by Jacques 1st in 1231, Minorque under
protectorate of the crown of Aragon remained occupied by the Moors until 1287.
With the defeat of the Moslems the Balearic Islands were incorporated into the
Catalano-Aragonais kingdoms. In order to restore the economy of these islands, James
offered lands to all of his lieutenants to encourage them to settle in Majorque. A
proposal all the more interesting since these lands are free from vassalage and
seigneuraux rights. The sharing is accompanied by a program of colonization. The
Page 13 of 54
Pope Gregoire IX promises to the colonists the granting of indulgences, a privilege
usually reserved for those who accomplished a Holy Land voyage. Always anxious to
repopulate the island, Jacques 1st and the principal landowners integrate Moors who
remained in Majorque after the defeat. Many families came from Aragon to colonize
these new lands. The names of some of these colonists were: Castell, Coll, Roca,
Canals, Pujols, Boher, Soler, Willbar, Massot, Pons, Prats, Alsina...
MENORCA
January 17 1287, Alfonso III " the Liberal ", king of Catalogne and of Aragon
established his camp on the illa del Rey inside the roads of Mahon and finally
conquered Minorque at the end of the battle of Es Vergé. Before definitively driving
out the Moors de Minorque, he ordered them to pay a ransom to avoid being reduced
to slavery or being thrown into the sea, with no form of appeal. Mahon had to suffer
many years of bad times to recover from this loss. During two centuries, its role was
limited to that of a small garrison for the defense of the port.
After the expulsion of the Moslems, the repopulation of the island began with the
establishment of Catalans between whom the captured lands were distributed and
establishing the basis of the current minorquine society. The distribution of the lands
between those who had taken part in the conquest of " bona race catalana " according
to the chronicler Ramon Muntaner, is at the origin of the " cavalleries ". Those who
always came to the defense of the island, at the call of the governor or the sound of
the alarm bell, and at the time of the alarms produced by the approach of the pirates or
other attackers.
During XIVe and XVe century, the countryside minorquine specializes in the
breeding of sheep, the wool trade great strides and brings about the development of a
textile industry of artisanal type; but the poverty of the country, related to the fear of
the incursions of the North-African pirates is at the origin of the progressive
depopulation of the island. To counter this state of affairs; in 1427, King Alphonse V
of Aragon granted amnesty of all offenses to those who, in the future, would come to
be established in Minorque; only excluded the criminals from lese-majesty and the
counterfeiters. The capital of the island was Ciutadella, at that time.
In 1535 Mahon was destoyed by Barberousse whose army plundered and burned the
city, massacred the citizens; eight hundred people are taken into slavery. A few years
later, July 9 1558, the Turks attacked Ciutadella. The combat was unequal: 620 men
faced an Ottoman army made up of 15000 soldiers and equipped with powerful
artillery. At the end of the resistance, which lasted 7 days, the city fell on July 9 to the
Turks who put it to fire and blood. After three days of carnage, they set out again
Page 14 of 54
while taking along 4000 prisoners in slavery to Constantinople, by leaving the capital
of the practically striped island to the continual attacks of the Turkish pirates, the
periodic famines and the epidemics of plague.
Nevertheless, colonists were still coming to the island. At least two of the families that
had come to Majorca in the 13th century were in the area of Mahon in by the latter
part of the 16th century and early 17th centuries. My Pons ancestors were in Mahon
before 1579, the Pujols were in Ciutadella by the 1550's and the Prats were at Villa-
Carlos by 1620. but the conditions on the islands were such that it is not surprising
that so many were ready to move to Florida in the middle of the 18th century.

PASSENGERS FROM THE BALEARIC ISLANDS TO FLORIDA IN 1768 (MINORCA AND MAJORCA)

Intro Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish-born physician and wealthy member of the East Florida Society
in London which was formed in 1766, conceived a plan to bring colonists of Greek, Italian,
Minorcan and Turkish origins to Florida in the hopes of cultivating the land. Great Britain
had acquired Florida around 1763.
The Turnbull venture: On March 31, 1768, a fleet consisting of the below-mentioned eight
ships left Mahon, Minorca with over 1400 passengers. The fleet arrived in Gibraltar on April
3, 1768, then left Gibraltar on April 17, 1768. Of the 1403 passengers who had left
Gibraltar, only 1,255 managed to reach the coast of East Florida as 148 of them perished on
the high seas. Three children were born at sea: Eulalia Elquina (Alzina); Antonia Arnau; and Benito Buenaventura (unknown parents).
Four of the ships which carried some 700 immigrants, arrived in St. Augustine, Florida on
June 26, 1768. The other four vessels had been carried off course by strong currents, but
they eventually reached St. Augustine little by little, arriving one after the other, during the
month of July, 1768.

FERNANDO MARTI CAMPS, Priest, Notary Archivist of the Episcopal
Tribunal of Menorca.
CERTIFIED: According to the existent documentation in this court,
ascending genealogy line of Matias Pons (Huguet), emigrant to Florida
1768, is as follows:
(I) Juan Pons, colonist of the ancient colony named "Bellver" was
married to Agueda Cardona. Both were living in the town of Alayor, on
Page 23 of 54
the island of Menorca, the second part of the 16th century.
(II) His son, Pedro Pons (Cardona), colonist of the ancient name "Rafal
d' En Fanals", married Margarita Pons (Tremol), daughter of Pedro and
Antonia, the 14th of September 1618, in the parish of St. Eulalia in the
town of Alayor.
(III) His son, Miguel Pons (Pons), married twice. First with Benita
Guardia (Garriga), daughter of Lorenzo and Benita, the 15th of February
1653, Alayor, and having become a widower, he married Francisca Gonalons
(Mercadal), daughter of Jamie and Ana, the 3rd of November 1657, in the
same town of Alayor.
(IV) Miguel Pons (Gonalons) was his son, born of the second marriage of
his father. He married Margarita Crespi (Ximenes), daughter of Pedro and
of Antonia, the 4th of September 1694, in Alayor.
(V) Miguel Pons (Crespi), his son married Juana Alzina (Salom),
daughter of Francisco and Antonia, the 15th of February 1722, in Alayor.
(VI) It was his son, Francisco Pons (Alzina), who married Agueda Huguet
(Quintana), daughter of Matias and of Margarita, the 8th of February
1747. The last name of the wife is correctly written Huguet (it is the
diminutive Hugo), but in the documentation of the period, various
incorrect forms are evident: Uguet, Oguet and Euguet or Euget. But,
after contracting marriage in Alayor, the young couple made their
permanent residence in the town of Mercadal, close to Alayor, on the
same island of Menorca. There, his established branch continued until
he moved to Florida. Francisco Pons (Alzina) became the juror of the
University of Mercadal (it is to say, Municipal Adviser of the town),
by that which he gives the year 1755 honorary courtesy title "Magnifico".
These were the children of the Magnifico Francisco Pons and of wife
Agueda Huguet(Quintana):
1. Miguel Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 16th of
December. Died in childhood.
2. Matais Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 23rd of
November 1749. He moved to Florida where his lineage continued.
3. Juana Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal, was baptized the 3rd of
January 1752. Died as a child.
4. Francisco Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal, baptized the 5th of
October 1753. He also died at a young age.
5. Miguel Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 16th of
October 1754.
6. Margarita Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal, baptized the 9th of
December 1755. Died as a child.
7. Juana Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 29th of
August 1758.
8. Francisco Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 15th of
Page 24 of 54
November 1760. His God-Father at the baptism, was the Reverand Pedros
Camps, who later accompanied the Menorcan Expedition to Florida and
died in St. Augustine.
9. Jaime Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 4th of
February 1763 by the same Reverand Pedro Camps.
10. Margarita Pons (Huguet), born in Mercadal and baptized the 11th
of February 1767 by the Reverand Pedro Camps, at this time vicar of
the parrish Mercadal and spiritual guide for the Menorcan Expedition
to Florida in the following year 1768.
All these dates stated by the documentation of this Archivist Diocesan,
they are signed and certified in Cindadela, the largest city in Menorca,
the 7th of February 1976.
Signed,
Fernando Marti, Priest

The Minorcans in Florida
"The New Smyrna Colony" was the name given to a large group of immigrants from the island of Minorca, off the
coast of Spain; and a much smaller group of Italians and Greeks from Italy and Greece. Colonel James Grant,
governor of the British province of East Florida, in a letter to the Count of Shelbourne in England on July 2, 1768,
wrote, "This my Lord, I believe is the largest importation of white inhabitants that ever was brought into America at
a time."
England gained control of Florida in 1763 in a trade with Spain and held this control until 1783, when Spain
regained Florida. It was during this period, that a Scottish doctor by the name of Andrew Turnbull, a former British
Consul at Smyrna, Greece was given a grant of approximately 20,000 acres of land about 70 miles south of St.
Augustine, Florida and called it New Smyrna. It was proposed that the colony would undertake the raising of cotton,
olives, indigo, and make wine and silk.
Minorca is the second largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands, which at the time of the New Smyrna project was
under English control. The islands are 50 to 190 miles off the coast of Spain. Together, they form a province of
Spain. Minorca is about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. The primary town is Mahon, considered one of the finest
deep-water ports on the Mediterranean. The immigrants would sail from this port for the New World and, more
specifically, for the Florida Colony.
Dr. Turnbull first recruited one hundred and ten Italians and took them to the port of Mahon. He then sailed to the
port city of Smyrna and the surrounding Levant to collect several hundred Greeks. It was some months later when
he returned to Mahon to find that nearly all of his young Italians had married or were betrothed to the lovely
Minorcan girls. The Minorcan families of these girls appealed to be included in the proposed British Colony. Other
Minorcan families pressed to go also. So, rather than a couple of hundred Italians and Greeks, the final group that
sailed in eight ships, totaled 1,403, largely Minorcans, whose ancestry was mostly Roman and Latin, descended
from the famous Carthaginians.
The Minorcans' contract with the British colonizers came under the Indentured Servant Law. Each was to serve 6 to
8 years and at the end of that time, would receive 50 acres of land, plus 5 acres for each child. Father Pedro Camps
of San Martin de Mercadel, in Minorca accompanied the group and was their spiritual leader and advisor. His pain
taking efforts in recording baptisms, marriages and deaths formed the background for many of the families histories
that was later recorded about many of these families. His diary is called "The Golden Book of the Minorcans". The
original book of Father Camps is still in good condition and several handwritten copies are on file at the Historical
Library in St. Augustine. The original at the diocesan archives is kept along with other important documents in a
special room under at prescribed temperature to aid preservation. The Diocesan headquarters is now located in
Loretto across the street from St. Joseph's.
"LES MESQUITES" as the colony was also called, came to a bitter end in 1777. In the face of extreme adversities,
the colony had lasted nine years. Scorching heat, disease, deaths, menacing Indians, inadequate shelter, lack of food,
insufficient clothing, but most of all the cruel treatment by Andrew Turnbull and his overseers. There are several
accounts of how the English authorities in St. Augustine became aware of the seriousness of these problems. One
story passed down through the years, tells of how Ramon Rogero, father of Alberto, and Francisco Pellicer, Sr.
undertook to build a makeshift boat so they could get to St. Augustine to report conditions to the governor. Instead
of reaching St. Augustine, they were picked up by a British ship sailing to Baltimore. From there they worked their
way back down to St. Augustine on foot and horseback.
They reached St. Augustine and met with the governor, who showed great empathy for their plight. He sent soldiers
to the colony and took numerous depositions (all a matter of recorded history) from a number of the colonists. As a
result, the governor permitted the colony to come to St. Augustine "en masse" which they did in July 1777. And in
the Fall of that year, Father Camps followed with the aged and infirm for whom special provisions had to made. The
total number of Minorcans that arrived in St. Augustine was a far cry from the number left Minorca nine years prior.
There were 1403 that left Minorca in those eight ships and in the ensuing nine years 930 died. With new births in
that same period, there were 600 who fled to St. Augustine in 1777.
Some of the more notable descendants of this group were the Benet brothers, Stephen and William, both famous
poets, Stephen the better known of the two. Also, Judy Canova, the famous comedianne and Hollywood star of the
thirties and forties. There were also two Bishops, Bishop Manucy and Bishop Pellicer. Both served in the
Confederate army as Chaplains and were later assigned to the diocese of Mobile, Alabama and San Antonio, Texas.
The Minorcans got along fine with the English, but they were happier to see Spain regain St. Augustine in 1783.
They were very much at home with their Latin cousins. They intermarried with the Spanish families and those of the
English who remained in the area. It is safe to say that in the veins of all St. Augustine native families runs the blood
of the Minorcans.
Minorcans are primarily of Catalan descent, Catalonia being a province in the northeast section of Spain, with
Barcelona the principle city. The slingshot was invented by the Minorcans and they were famous as "stone slingers"
in the armies of Julius Caesar. Mayonnaise was invented by the Minorcans during the French occupation of the
island and carried back to France. Admiral Farragut's father settled in Tennessee from Minorca in 1783. He was the
famous admiral who is known for his alleged cry, "Damn the Torpedoes, full speed ahead."
The Minorcans were a close knit group, they settled close together in what is now the historical district of St.
Augustine, frequently called the Minorcan Quarter. Many of them worked farms a few miles out of town, but
returned at night to the protection of the nearby fort. There were frequent encounters with the Indians initially, but as
they became less frequent, the farmers went further and further out from town.

but if she should find it to h advantage to join in with my children and one of the heirs, in
that case, two shares, or parts shall be given to my wife Dona M. A. Pons, that is to say, my
children being nine and two shares for my wife M. A. Pons will make eleven shares or parts.
My body is to be buried at the side of my late wife Dona Mariana Villalonga Pons, that is if I
die in Fernandina; Then Three Masses of the Lord shall be said for me.
If any required formality should have been omitted in this my last will and Testament, I
charge my executors with carrying out and complying with what is needful. I hope that my
wife and all my children who are in the house unmarried may live together, in the same
house, as only in that way will they be able to live frugally in this village of Fernandina

The following is a letter written from the Greenfield Plantation in Duval County in 1851 by
Bunberry Haynes and describes the local area around his brother Melton Haynes'
plantation.
The letter follows:
I thought I would have written some time ago but through neglect have delayed till now. I
am still staying with Melton attending to his plantation business. Crops are generally sorry
in this section owing to the long drought. Through the month of May and June we will make
about twenty bags of cotton but not more than half enough corn. We have plenty of game
have deer, bear and panthers. I killed a very large panther about three weeks ago. We have
the best bear and panther dogs perhaps you ever saw. You had better come out this winter
and look at the country. We will show plenty of good land and mosquitoes and fleas enough
to keep you moving but in fact I am certain that you can do a great deal bette here than
you can where you now live. I am very well pleased with the country so far as I have seen.
I am well at present and have enjoyed as good health this season as I ever did. I have but
one grand objection to the country and that is the girls are very scarce. Melton and his
family are well. Give my respects to all inquiring friends and especially to the gals. Give my
love to your family. I have nothing more at present. I remain yours truly.
B. Haynes
Greenfield Plantation was bounded to the north by St Johns River, on the east by Pablo
Creek, on the west by Mount Pleasant Creek and south by lands of John Pons heirs and
the public lands (cannot define at this time south boundry).
If you look on a map this is lands just to the west of Mayport. If you go east on Atlantic Blvd
to San Pablo road and turn north; you're there. Greenfield Creek even flows down the
middle of it. I even show an area called Greenfield on my map at that location.
Plantation included 1000 acres not including any marsh land. It was bought in1849 for
$3000. The Haynes brothers lived peacefully at Greenville Plantation for nearly ten years,
began rearing their families and cultivating the farm. They had many slaves and enjoyed
platation life. When the Civil War began Bunberry Haynes moved his family to Hampton
(near Stark). In 1862 the Port Authority in Jacksonville told the Haynes unless they were
neutral they had to leave. When the Union gunboats came into the river early one morning,
Melton Haynes hurriedly packed up and moved his family back down near Leesburg in the
area where he had gotten his first land grants in Florida. The house is reported to have been
burned by Union forces. After the war (1866) the plantation land and out buildings were
sold for by Melton Haynes (through an agent, for he did not return until a trip in 1876) for
$1500. It sold again that same year for $6000.
It is said the family would row a boat acoss the river and go to church at the Mayport
Methodist Church.

Notes for ALTHEA BLUEBELL "COOTIE" PONCE:
Althea Bluebell Ponce was known affectionately as Grandma Cootie or just Cootie. After her
first husband, Robert Seals Moon, died unexpectedly of botched dental work in 1938, she
remarried to Wilfred William "Bill" Jaudon.
Grandma Cootie was only about 5 feet tall but her spirit made her seem 10 feet. She loved
salt-water fishing. There are many tales of her standing in chest deep water, in the
pounding surf, casting for Whites and Drum, then cooking them with grits and a big pot of
steaming coffee. Cootie was an excellent cook. She died after having several severe strokes,
each one nearly taking her courtageous life. Her already weakend body succummed to a
massive heart attack that ended the life of what was a greatly spirited and strong-willed
woman. She is missed by all who where priviledged to know her.

Notes for ROBERT SEALS MOON:
Robert Seals Moon died of complications incurred during dental surgery. The dentist pulled
an infected tooth and the infection spread rapidly through his body, killing him. He was a
Cabinet Maker at the time of death. His father traveled down by train to retrieve his body.
He is buried in the family plots in Greene County, Georgia.

Notes for WILFRED WILLIAM "BILL" JAUDON:
Wilfred William JAUDON went by his middle name, William or "Bill", exclusively. His
occupations were Plastering Contractor and Commercial Fisherman at the time of his death.
Bill plastering trade took him many places. At one time they lived in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. He died suddenly in a boating accident in 1972 while testing a new boat motor on
the intercoastal river in Florida. They were living in a primitive island home with no
electricity or amenities at the time. Bill's father was: BENJAMIN EDWARD JAUDON (b:1889
SC d:1960 GA) and MABLE D. SAXON (b:Jan 1888 Orange City, Volusia Co, FL d: 1970 Fort
Pierce, Saint Lucie Co, FL). His mother was only known as "Grandmaudie". In the 1930
Florida Federal census she was "Mabel D. Jaudon". AUGUST 2011: I found Grandmaudie's
maiden name! She was "Mabel D. Saxon", d/o Mrs. Mattie A. Saxon (b:Jul 1855 New York
d:1940 Saint Lucie Co, FL).
Most all the Jaudon's were from/in Volusia Co., Brevard Co. & Saint Lucie Co, Florida. I'm
told the Jaudon's were all very nice people, courageous and generous to a fault.

Can anyone give me any info on Antonio Pons II born 1758 (Minorca); died 1813?
Married who? Any proof of who he married? He was granted 175 acres at the
Mosqauito Inlet in 1803 by the Spanish.

Do you have any information on Maria A. B. Pons who married John Seymour
Pickett? I Can't find a marriage record in the Catholic records for them or in "The
People of East Florida During the Revolutionary War - War of 1812". Maria tried to
get a widdows pension, as Seymour Pickett fought in the War of 1812, but, it wasn't
approved. The paper was in such condition as unreadable they said. She had two
wittnesses that acknowledged that she was the wife of John Seymour Pickett, but it
was still not approved. Seymour Pickett was previously married to Rebecca Collier
who drowned, and they had one daughter named Rebecca. I will post the family
below:
1. Juan Pons b. 1761, Villa de Mahon, isla de Menorca, (son of Antonio Pons and
Magdalena Cardona) occupation Farmer of Minorca, m. 10-DEC-1787, in St.
Augustine, St. Johns Co., FL, Juana Catherine Andreu, b. 09-JUL-1772, New Smyrna
or colony of "Les Mesqites", (daughter of Antonio Andreu and Catalina Maria
Oliveros) buried: St. Johns County, Fl. Juan died c1810, St. Augustine, St. Johns Co,
FL, buried: St. Johns County, St. Augustine, Fl.
Children:
i Margaret Pons b. 20-SEP-1788, St. Johns County, Fl.

for Seymour's war pension. She could have gone to live with her son in Gadsden Co.,
FL, remarried or died, or lived with another one of her children. The 1790 St. John
Co., FL Census has her listed as the daughter of Antonio Pons, & his father was
Francisco Pons, or may have been Matias Pons of Minorca.
Children:

Hi, Jean
Have you also seen the name PAXETI/PACETTI/PACETTY linked with PONS,
CARRARES, COLLIER...etc? I am a great great granddaughter of a Catharine Ann
PACETTY WILDER (b. 25 January 1854 Savannah, GA).
I have a book, "Pacetty Lineage" which was compiled by Marguerite Marree Mathews
that may be of interest to you...lots of info from 1724 to present.
Of particular interest: "Maria Dolores Florentina PAXETI married to Antonio PONS
8 Sept. 1823, in a Civil ceremony and on 5 Nov. 1823 Catholic Church St. Augustine,
FL....Antonio Matias PONS b. 15 August 1798 in St. Augustine, baptised 25 August
1798 by Father Miquel O'Reilly. His parents were Juan PONS of Villa de Mahon,
Minorca, son of Antonio PONS and Margarita CARDONA and his wife Juana
ANDREU, native of Province, daughter of Antonio ANDREU and Maria
OLIVERAS. Sponsors for the baptism: Matias PONS and Agueda PONS."
The book is about 70 pages, but I'd be happy to compile what I have or do lookups for
you!

I have responded by email as I have lots of questions and much info to share but I
Page 48 of 54
show the spouse of Juana Catalina ANDREU as Juan PONZ (notice the spelling) and
have them married on 20 Dec 1786 in St. Augustine, FL. I believe they had 7 children
but I only have documentation on my line Margarita Francesca PONZ (their 3rd
daughter) b. 7 Jan 1794. This PONZ line is closely related to the PONS and I have the
two lines marrying in the early 1700's and again in the mid 1800's in my tree. Has
anyone else found these two distinct lines and spellings?
Could your Maria A. B. Pons actually be spelled PONZ???
