Elixism by George Pappas
What is the purpose? Is there a meaning hidden behind our actions?
Finding the answers of these questions is the reason that led me to Art. That
we ought to perceive the visible world with abstract thinking, shed light
on our dark and impassable compartments of our mind and process our
thoughts revolutionary so truth will be revealed from the fake structure of
this world. However the Artist of abstract thinking foresees furthermore:
To make people understand that other, more universal rules, purely
spiritual, govern the structure of this world. To seek out the communal
rules that define our deepest and unapproachable parts of our life. How?
By removing the unnecessary from the parts to keep their substance
intact as for example abstractly the marble becomes a statue. The abstract
thinking, in other words the very same thing that is trying to detach the
visible object to avoid imitating it in order to consider all others things thatare not derived directly from its image, is just the sum of the opposites,
a synthesis of contradictory meanings at a higher level which Socrates
approached with the dialectical method. And all this are done in a way not
circular but forming a three-dimensional spiral (Ancient Greek - helix)
of gradual changes that lead to turning points until we reach a higher
meaning. So I call my purpose in Art "Elixism" and the only way to begin
is by knowing you know nothing, doubting with eager all that surround you,
but even more yourself.
After his first group exchibition in New York at Caelum Gallery, the artist isexchibiting at Salon des Artistes the following series of works:
The Name-portraits series is a diverse way of dealing with
the letters of the alphabet. By transforming them into Art forms, he has
done his self-portrait using the initial letter of his name (G) and his sur-
name (PAPPAS). The two (A)s reversed horizontally become eyes, The (S) is
turned into mouth and jaw, the double (P)s reversed vertically became the
ear and the line of the face, while the last (P) and his initial (G) became the
nose.
Universal Rules is a series of works that seek the communalrules that apply to humanity. Observation of societal models, and analysis
of philosophical concepts like existence, God, Good versus Bad and Hu-
man Nature are set on questioning to find answers that are essential to all
of us and can apply to the entire human race independently of civilization
and culture.
The work Existence coming from this series is making
a point to the infinite choices a human being has in his life free to be
anything he wants as well as to the negative or positive impact of his
reality (City, Society, Political Environment, Circumstances), using symbolssuch us a Magnifying mirror symbolizing a progressed version of our
existence by magnifying oneself when the spectator looks at the mirror,
the tube symbolizing the journey of our individual existence, the soil
symbolizing the environment of each one existence-what we realize as
reality (society, city we live) that gives as opportunities to fulfill our dreams
or takes them away from us, serving as the soil does to a tree, either fertile
or sterile. However existence has no boundaries, if we break the chains of
our reality and be able to move to a new environment fertile to our visions.
The number zero (0) defines the start, the point of non-existence. Then
the first male and female form were created and people were copulating
until each one of us was born by his or her parents proving that we are all
brothers and children of the same father so we can be anything we want
since we gather the DNA of all our previous ancestors to Adam and Eve.
The diptych Realist, Idealist or Rebel? of the Universal
Rules series is dealing with all the possible roles of an individual inside a
social environment and how their actions can transform society leading to
new rules taking as an example the antismoking law as a non provocativeway to declare how people interact with their social environment. Looking
back to history we may observe the same attitude towards for example the
fight of the right of freedom of speech e.t.c.
The first work Realist (not featured in this catalog) depicts
the passive role of an individual towards the rules imposed by society. The
second work Idealist or Rebel? deals with the rest two possible roles of
the individual towards the system and the regulatory framework of a social
environment. Using symbols such us a Mirror and human figure smok-
ing symbolizing the idealist dreaming an alternative environment wherehe can freely act in contrast of the laws established.. Although his or her
actions are semi-passive (not really rebelling), by expressing ideas against
the established environment is setting the ground for a rebellion to start.
The spectator can look at the mirror reflecting a new reality for him or her
using a virtual smoking machine. Putting together found objects with
the assemblage technique anAshtray, a cigar and matches are used for
the role of the rebel serving as his weapons. The spectator comes in a
position to use the real objects (To take the cigar, light it and smoke it
putting the ashes into the ashtray) in order to rebel. The found objectsare used due to their practical nature since rebellion is not of theoretical
nature like idealism, it needs actions.
The last work featured, Bakchai, comes from Dionysian
Mysteries a series of works aiming in discovering the altering nature
of Dionysus during the rituals of ancient Greece in which intoxicants and
other trance-inducing techniques were used, such as dance and music, to
remove inhibitions and societal constraints, liberating the individual and
bringing him to a primitive state.
George Pappas was born in Greece and currently works in Athens, Paris
and New York.
