A Warburton family occupied Pool Bank farm in Bowdon in the 16th and 17th centuries. The earliest known ancestor is John Warburton who died before 1592, when his widow Jane died and left a will. The
family later moved to Timperley.
This tree is based on input from Robert Warburton of Timperley.

First Generation
1. John Warburton. John was born bef 1550. John died bef 1592.
This tree is based on input from Robert Egerton Warburton (Bob) of Timperley. He states that Johnwas alive in 1561, but I don’t know the source. As his son George was an executor of his widow’swill, and so must have been 21 in 1592, John must have been born before 1550.
The family farmed at Poole Bank Farm in Bowdon.
John married Jane. Jane died in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1592.
Bob, and Norman Warburton refer to Jane as Joan, but her will is listed under Jane by CheshireWills, and this is my reading of the name. Her children are determined from her will. Apart fromGeorge nothing further is known of them.

2. George Warburton (John1). George was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, bef 1571. George died aft1625.
George is mentioned in the Subsidy Roll of 1593 and Rental of 1625 (Stamford Estate papers),though in the later case the rent is paid by the wife of George.Child:

Bob has John as the son of George, and likely father of George born 1610. The only evidence ofhim seems to be the marriage to Ann in Feb 1610, though I am unaware of the source for thiswedding as it isn’t recorded at Bowdon. It is possible the second George was the direct son of thefirst.
In Feb 1610 John married Ann Arstall.

4. George Warburton (John3, George2, John1). George was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, abt 1610.George died in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1655. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 24Apr 1655.
On 7 Dec 1632 when George was 22, he married Elizabeth Arstall in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire.Elizabeth was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, abt 1610. Elizabeth died in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1686.She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 19 Jan 1686.
Elizabeth left a will dated January 10th 1686 (modern date) in which she left her children smallbequests. She made her son William executor but he renounced the role on October 4th 1687. Herinventory was valued at £26 8s.

ii. Jane Warburton. Jane was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1636. She waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 14 Apr 1636. Jane died bef 1686.
Jane is not mentioned in her mother’s will so probably died beforehand.6 iii. Thomas Warburton (1640-1697)
iv. Margaret Warburton. Margaret was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1640. She waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 14 Feb 1640.
Margaret was Thomas’s twin. She is not mentioned in her mother’s will so probablydied beforehand.
v. William Warburton. William was born aft 1640. William died in Bowdon, Cheshire,on 12 Jan 1710. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 18 Jan 1710.
William is only known from his mother’s will where he was named executor, butnamed after George and Thomas in the list of bequests. However Jill Grovesbelieves he may have inherited Pool Bank Farm on the death of his brother George.Only one burial of a William of Bowdon is recorded in the appropriate timescale, butthere is no direct evidence it is this William.
vi. Anne Warburton. Anne was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1650. She waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 31 Mar 1650.
Anne married Richard Clarke.vii. Sibbile Warburton. Sibbile died in 1686. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary,
Cheshire, on 24 Sep 1686.
Sibbile is known from her mother’s will. She appears to have died a spinster andintestate. Administration was granted to her brother Thomas, and sister Ann Clarke.

5. George Warburton (George4, John3, George2, John1). George was born in Bowdon, Cheshire,in 1633. He was christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 6 Nov 1633. George died inBowdon, Cheshire, in 1688. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire.
There is no record of George’s marriage. Bob believes his wife’s name might be Elizabeth, andthat the wedding was circa 1660, which fits with the baptism of their first child. In addition to thechildren below, George had 2 unnamed infants buried at Bowdon, on April 9th 1681, and April 261682.
Abt 1660 when George was 27, he married Elizabeth.

ii. Elizabeth Warburton. Elizabeth was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1667. She waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 5 Nov 1667.
My Bowdon records show this Elizabeth as the daughter of George of Partington.The most likely possible marriage for Elizabeth at Bowdon is to George Renshaw in1694.
iii. Anne Warburton. Anne was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1669. She waschristened on 31 Mar 1669.
Ann is only known from Bob. There is no baptism in the Bowdon record, or onFamilySearch (could she be at Warburton like brother John?).
iv. Rebecca Warburton. Rebecca was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1673. She waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 13 Mar 1673.
On 17 Dec 1700 when Rebecca was 27, she married Nathan Johnson in Bowdon,Cheshire. Nathan was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, abt 1670.
v. Deborah Warburton. Deborah was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 9 Nov 1676. Shewas christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 2 Feb 1677.
Deborah’s birth date is from Bob, source unknown. The baptism is of the daughterof George of Bowdon. She possibly married Samuel Hackerley in 1700. TheBowdon parish register records they were both from Altrincham and married atChester “as they say”. There is no other likely marriage at Bowdon.
vi. Sybil Warburton. Sybil was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 12 Apr 1680. Sybil diedin 1681. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 20 Apr 1681.
Sybil’s birth date is from Bob. There is no baptism in the Bowdon record (could shebe at Warburton like brother John?).

viii. George Warburton. George was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1686. He waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 25 May 1686. George died in Bowdon,Cheshire, in 1686. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 21 Dec 1687.
6. Thomas Warburton (George4, John3, George2, John1). Thomas was born in Bowdon,Cheshire, in 1640. He was christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 14 Feb 1640. Thomasdied in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 20 May 1697. He was buried on 23 May 1697.
Thomas was a wheelwright.
The deaths of Thomas and his wife Mary in quick succession left their children in financialdifficulties, not helped by the apparent treachery of John Jackson, their father’s administrator. Thisresulted in various suites and judgements in 1699 which are documented, along with Thomas’saccounts, in Bowdon Wills Part 3 by Jill Groves and Pat Higginbotham.
On 5 Jun 1668 when Thomas was 28, he married Mary Aldcroft in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire.Mary was born in Baguely, Cheshire, abt 1645. Mary died in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 25 Apr 1697.She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 29 Apr 1697.
They had the following children:i. John Warburton. John was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1668. He was christened
in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 12 Sep 1668. John died in Bowdon, Cheshire, in1668. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 20 Sep 1668.
ii. Aldcroft Warburton. Aldcroft was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1672. He waschristened in Rostherne, St Mary, Cheshire, on 9 Apr 1672.
Aldcroft’s declared age of 23 in the hearings of 1699 would give him a birth datecirca 1676. There is no further evidence of him at Bowdon after the hearings andsuites of 1699.
On 26 Nov 1704 when Aldcroft was 32, he married Margaret Gaskell. A marriagelicense exists, but there is no parish record of the actual wedding, nor of anychildren. Margaret was born in Warrington, Lancashire.
iii. Elizabeth Warburton. Elizabeth was born abt 1674. She was christened inRostherne, St Mary, Cheshire, on 19 Mar 1674.
Elizabeth is only known from the hearings relating to her father’s accounts. She wasalso named in a suite re her father’s estate in 1700.
iv. Rachel Warburton. Rachel was born abt 1679. She was christened in Rostherne,St Mary, Cheshire, on 31 Oct 1679.

On 5 Feb 1701 when Rachel was 22, she married Henry Powell in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. Henry and Rachel had three sons and three daughters. Theirgrandson Henry Daniel married Pheobe Bancroft, daughter of Mary Warburton andJohn Bancroft of the Hale Barns Clan, and a desendant of theirs is Paul Cynsye, mycontact. Henry died in 1727. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 1 Sep1727.
v. Sibbill Warburton. Sibbill was born in 1681. She was christened in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire, on 10 Jul 1681. Sibbill died in 1683. She was buried in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire, on 9 Jul 1683.
Sibbill is only known from her burial as the daughter of Thomas of Bowdon.vi. Mary Warburton. Mary was born in 1685. She was christened in Bowdon, St Mary,
Cheshire, on 2 Jan 1686.
Mary is mentioned in the hearings of 1699.

7. John Warburton (George5, George4, John3, George2, John1). John was born in Bowdon,Cheshire, in 1661. He was christened in Warburton, St Werberg, Cheshire, on 9 Sep 1661. Johndied in Timperley, Cheshire, on 23 Dec 1728. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 26Dec 1728.
John’s monumental inscription is recorded on the Owen manuscript (grave 1337) but is not on theBowdon archevist’s current grave list. John was buried with his son and daughter-in-law, and wasdescribed as a Yeoman in his 66th year (actually ?6th year but 66 fits well). According to his burialrecord he was buried in linen.
On 25 Dec 1699 when John was 38, he married Margaret Royle in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire.Margaret was born in Hale, Cheshire, abt 1680. She was christened in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 22 Sep 1680.
Margaret was from Well Green in Hale. Her burial is not recorded at Bowdon, though it is possibleshe remarried.

ii. Thomas Warburton. Thomas was born in Timperley, Cheshire, on 8 Mar 1704. Hewas christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 18 Mar 1704. Thomas died inTimperley, Cheshire, on 27 Apr 1776. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire,on 2 May 1776.
Thomas died aged 70 and is buried in grave 78 with his nephew William. There isno evidence of a marriage at Bowdon.
iii. William Warburton. William was born in Timperley, Cheshire, abt 1708.
William is only known of through Bob. His baptism isn’t recorded at Bowdon, or onFamilySearch.

8. George Warburton (John6, George5, George4, John3, George2, John1). George was born inTimperley, Cheshire, in 1702. He was christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 20 Sep 1702.George died in Timperley, Cheshire, on 15 May 1779. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 18 May 1779.
George was a yeoman farmer. The baptisms of his children, and of some of his grandchildren, arenot recorded at Bowdon, or on FamilySearch. However some of his grandchildren’s baptisms arerecorded at Hale Chapel, suggesting this was a Presbyterian family. There is no record ofBaptisms at Hale Chapel between its foundation in 1723, and 1752. The unrecorded baptismsprobably took place there during this time, or were possibly performed in the home.

On 6 Feb 1728 when George was 26, he married Anne Johnson in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire.Anne was born in Hale, Cheshire, abt 1700. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 20Aug 1766.

Margaret was born at Green Lane Farm. She died a widow.
On 2 May 1760 when Margaret was 20, she married John Chorlton in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. John is described as a husbandman. Margaret’s brother Thomas isa witness. They had 2 sons, Richard and Warburton. John was born in Timperley,Cheshire, in 1737. He was christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 17 Aug1737. John died bef 1812.
iv. George Warburton. George was born in Timperley, Cheshire, abt 1742. Georgedied in Timperley, Cheshire, on 29 May 1798. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 31 May 1798.
George is buried in grave 482 with his wife Sarah, aged 55. He is described as ayeoman on his burial record.
On 7 Nov 1762 when George was 20, he married Sarah Priestner in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. Sarah was born in 1739. She was christened in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 19 Aug 1739. Sarah died in Timperley, Cheshire, on 14 Dec 1795. Shewas buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 17 Dec 1795.
Sarah is buried in grave 482, aged 55, with her husband.v. William Warburton. William was born in Timperley, Cheshire, in 1746. William died
in Timperley, Cheshire, on 10 Mar 1764. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 13 Mar 1764.
William was born at Green Lane Farm. He was buried in grave 78 aged 17 years 9months with his uncle Thomas.

The baptisms of Thomas’s children are not recorded at Bowdon, or on FamilySearch; details areprovided by Bob.
The burial of Thomas of Hale aged 88 fits with the details provided by Bob.
On 28 Apr 1755 when Thomas was 27, he married Anne Armstrong in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire. Anne was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, abt 1735. Anne died in Hale, Cheshire, in 1812.She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 24 Feb 1812.
Anne the wife of Thomas of Hale was buried in 1812 aged 77, giving her a birth date of circa 1735.

John of Timperley buried in 1828 aged 70 is the correct age to be this John.ii. Anne Warburton. Anne was born in Timperley, Cheshire, in 1758.
On 15 May 1792 when Anne was 34, she married John Brundrett in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. John is identified as Anne’s husband by Bob, though on themarriage record she is called Peggy. John was born in Timperley, Cheshire, in1755.
10. John Warburton (George7, John6, George5, George4, John3, George2, John1). John was bornin Timperley, Cheshire, in 1729. John died in Timperley, Cheshire, on 19 Dec 1802. He was buriedin Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 22 Dec 1802.
John is described as a yeoman on his burial record which gives his age as 72. However he isburied in grave 434 which gives his age as 73. He is buried with wife Jane, son John, and John’swife Ellen.
On 18 Mar 1760 when John was 31, he married Jane Cowther in Bowdon, Cheshire. Jane wasborn in Stretford, Lancashire, in 1732. She was christened in Stretford, Lancashire, on 30 Apr1732. Jane died in Timperley, Cheshire, on 2 Nov 1806. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 5 Nov 1806.
Jane is buried in grave 434 with husband John, son John, and John’s wife Ellen.

Hannah was born at Green Lane Farm. Her baptism isn’t recorded.
On 27 Dec 1785 when Hannah was 22, she married James Hardey in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. William was a witness. Hannah and James had 5 sons. James wasborn abt 1760.
iii. Mary Warburton. Mary was born in Timperley, Cheshire, in 1765.
Mary was born at Green Lane Farm. Her baptism is not recorded.
On 27 Dec 1787 when Mary was 22, she married Thomas Howarth in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. John was a witness. Thomas was born abt 1760.
iv. Ann Warburton. Ann was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1765. She was christenedin Hale Chapel, Cheshire, on 15 Jan 1766.

11. William Warburton (John8, George7, John6, George5, George4, John3, George2, John1).William was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1761. He was christened in Hale Chapel, Cheshire, on 5Feb 1761. William died in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 26 Sep 1814. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire, on 28 Sep 1814.
William was a farmer and salt carrier. He was buried in grave 435 with his wife, and daughterMartha Mellor, aged 53.
On 3 Feb 1785 when William was 24, he married Martha Worthington in Bowdon, St Mary,Cheshire. William’s brother John was a witness. Martha was born in Ringway, Cheshire, in 1763.She was christened in Ringway Chapel, Cheshire, on 10 Dec 1763. Martha died in Bowdon,Cheshire, on 9 Nov 1819. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 12 Nov 1819.
Martha’s baptism is recorded at Ringway Chapel on December 10th, and at Bowdon on December18th. It is possible one of the dates is incorrectly transcribed and the Bowdon entry is merely acopy of the baptism at Ringway. She was buried in grave 435 with her husband, and her daughterMartha Mellor, aged 57.

ii. Ellen Warburton. Ellen was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 23 Jun 1789. She waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 19 Jul 1789.
On 29 Jan 1821 when Ellen was 31, she married Frederick L’Oste Probard inBowdon, St Mary, Cheshire. Witnesses were Martha and William Warburton, Ellen’sbrother and sister.
Frederick was a surgeon from Arden parish.iii. Martha Warburton. Martha was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 8 Jul 1802. She was
christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 8 Aug 1802. Martha died on 31 Aug1862. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire.
Martha was buried in grave 435 with her parents.
On 28 Oct 1830 when Martha was 28, she married John Whitaker Mellor inBowdon, St Mary, Cheshire. John was from Manchester at the time of his wedding.Martha’s brother John was a witness.
iv. William Warburton. William was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 4 Sep 1795. Hewas christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 23 Sep 1795. ■ Census for St,Anns, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1861. William (65) is a retired grocer living at amilliner’s shop in St Anns Place with Betsey (63), Margaret (30), Mary (28), Jane

(26) and Ellen (24), all milliners (including Betsey). William died in Manchester,Lancashire, on 25 May 1861. He was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 29May 1861.
William leased Bowdon Hall from around 1822. He is described as a farmer ofBowdon Hall on 4 of his children’s baptisms, beginning in January 1823. Howeverhe later moved to Manchester and became a grocer, whilst his wife and 4 youngestdaughters became milliners. The move was probably before 1851, explaining hisabsence from the 1851 census, copies of which are lost for much of Manchester.The deaths of all his 3 sons at a young age may have precipitated the move.
His death was registered in 2q 1861 Manchester 8d 151, and he was buried ingrave 1138, aged 65.
On 2 Feb 1820 when William was 24, he married Betsy Warburton in Bowdon, StMary, Cheshire. A witness was E Warburton. Betsy was born in Bowdon, Cheshire,on 4 Mar 1799. She was christened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 31 Mar 1799.■ Census for Bowdon, Cheshire, in 1841. Betsey (40) is a farmer in Bowdon livingwith William (18), Martha (15), John (13), Margaret (11), Mary (7), Jane (6), andEllen (4). Husband William is not at home. Betsy died in Manchester, Lancashire,on 20 Nov 1870. She was buried in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 24 Nov 1870.
Betsey was the grand daughter of William, Schoolmaster of Bowdon. Her family isdescribed in the Josiah of Bowdon clan.
Betsy was baptised as Betty. She is referred to as Elizabeth on 4 of her children’sbaptisms, and as Betsey, Betty, and Betsy on others. The 4 references to Elizabethcoincide with the 4 where William is of Bowdon Hall.
Betsy’s death was registered in 4q 1870 Manchester 8d 247, aged 71. She wasburied in grave 1138 which gives her date of birth and so confirms her parentage.
v. Isaac Warburton. Isaac was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on 29 Apr 1807. He waschristened in Bowdon, St Mary, Cheshire, on 31 May 1807. ■ Census forManchester, Lancashire, in 1841. Isaac (30) is a grocer living at 77 Oldham Streetwith 8 others, including his nephew Peter Warburton (15) a grocer’s apprentice. ■Census for Cheetham, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1861. Isaac (53) is a retiredgrocer living at 13 Smedley Lane with Susan (46), sister, Martha Mellor (58) awidow, her daughter Mary (22) and nephew Edward Fox (9), plus 2 servants. ■Census for Cheetham, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1871.
