POP ART

WHAT IS POP ART?• Fascinated with mass-produced visual commodities of

popular culture.

• Sample Subjects: Advertisements, comic books, celebrities (Marilyn Monroe), Campbell's soup cans, cartoons, flags, food, bottles.

• 1950’s- 1960’s – Coincided with the globalization of pop music and youth culture personified by Elvis and The Beatles.

WHAT THE BIG DEAL?• The subject matter of POP ART was far from the traditional “high art” themes of morality,

mythology, and classic history. Pop Artists celebrated commonplace objects and people of everyday life, seeking to elevate popular culture to the level of fine art.

ANDY WARHOL• He developed the technique of projecting photographic images to a silk screen to produce

repetitive patterns within the same piece. He focused on famous people and everyday objects in his work.

ROBERT INDIANA• An American painter and sculptor most famous for his LOVE sculptures. He called himself

a “sign painter”. He mainly worked with short words and numbers. (EAT, LOVE, HUG)

ROY LICHTENSTEIN

• He is best known for his paintings of ‘machine-printed’ comic strips. He also was fond of depicting advertisements. He often used stencils, hard edges, and created the use of Ben Day dots.
