Greetings to future managers

participants of the World Youth Day in Krakow

Pope John Paul II in HIS Encyclical CENTESIMUS ANNUS (CA 56)

wrote: „...there is my wish the celebration of this anniversary will wake up new

enthusiasm to „study, spread and apply” of the social teaching of the Church”.

As Inspiration for you, future managers, to this „study”, will be the sample excerpts of

HIS teaching cited in PART 1. While in PART 2. excerpts of our research findings on the

application in organizations of POPE’s John Paul II teaching, and the first „Eight

PRINCIPLES of ethical work”, for which research has demonstrated statistically significant

positive correlation with labour productivity – let be an inspiration for YOU to „spread and

apply”.

The research devoted to the impact of WORK ETHICS on BUSINESS, SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

and RESPONSIBILITY according to John Paul II devoted to broad understanding BIZNESS are

conducted since 10 years by The Bogdan Janski Academy. This kind of research, year by year

indicates that, when applied, makes impact both on competitiveness as well as on the growth of

labour productivity, on the growth of sales, what makes possible growth of salaries and wages for

employees.

The need to conduct this kind of research by Young Managers Ethicality Researchers [YMER]

in the scope of the YMER worldwide net, we have presented at the 5th ISBEE World Conference 2012

was conducted in Warsaw.

We wish YOU successful „studying, spreading and application” for multiplication of

common good, in the spirit of St John Paul II teaching, through a „ new culture of work, which takes

into consideration the spiritual and material needs of human being and respects his basic rights”.

43. The Church has no models to present; models that are real and truly effective can

only arise within the framework of different historical situations, through the efforts of all

those who responsibly confront concrete problems in all their social, economic, political and

cultural aspects, as these interact with one another.84

the Church offers her social teaching as an indispensable and ideal orientation For such a task the Church offers her social teaching as an indispensable and ideal orientation, a teaching which, as already mentioned, recognizes the positive value of the market and of enterprise,

oriented towards the common good

but which at the same time points out that these need to be oriented towards the

common good.

dignity This teaching also recognizes the legitimacy of workers' efforts to obtain full respect for their

dignity and

participation…"work for themselves"85

to gain broader areas of participation in the life of industrial enterprises so that, while

cooperating with others and under the direction of others, they can in a certain sense "work

for themselves"85 through the exercise of their intelligence and freedom.

The integral development of the human person The integral development of the human person through work does not impede but rather

promotes the greater productivity and efficiency of work itself, even though it may weaken

consolidated power structures.

"society of persons" A business cannot be considered only as a "society of capital goods"; it is also a "society of

persons" in which people participate in different ways and with specific responsibilities,

whether they supply the necessary capital for the company's activities or take part in such

activities through their labour.

workers' movement To achieve these goals there is still need for a broad associated workers' movement, directed

towards the liberation and promotion of the whole person.

the relationship between individual or private property and the universal destination of material wealth

In the light of today's "new things", we have re-read the relationship between individual or private property and the universal destination of material wealth. Man fulfils himself by using his intelligence and freedom. In so doing he utilizes the things of this world as objects and instruments and makes them his own. The foundation of the right to private initiative and ownership is to be found in this activity.

for others and with others By means of his work man commits himself, not only for his own sake but also for others and

with others. Each person collaborates in the work of others and for their good. Man works in

order to provide for the needs of his family, his community, his nation, and ultimately all

humanity.86

in a progressively expanding chain of solidarity Moreover, he collaborates in the work of his fellow employees, as well as in the work of

suppliers and in the customers' use of goods, in a progressively expanding chain of solidarity.

Ownership of the means of production,… is just and legitimate… is just and legitimate (if not productive J.D.) Ownership of the means of production, whether in industry or agriculture, is just and legitimate if it serves useful work. It becomes illegitimate, however, when it is not utilized or when it serves to impede the work of others, in an effort to gain a profit which is not the result of the overall expansion of work and the wealth of society, but rather is the result of curbing them or of illicit exploitation, speculation or the breaking of solidarity among working

people.87 Ownership of this kind has no justification, and represents an abuse in the sight of God and man.

satisfactory levels of employment The obligation to earn one's bread by the sweat of one's brow also presumes the right to do so. A society in which this right is systematically denied, in which economic policies do not allow workers to reach satisfactory levels of employment, cannot be justified from an ethical

point of view, nor can that society attain social peace.88 Just as the person fully realizes himself in the free gift of self, so too ownership morally justifies itself in the creation, at the proper time and in the proper way, of opportunities for work and human growth for all.

Authentic development of man and society (SRS )

1. The social concern of the Church, directed towards an authentic development of man and society

which would respect and promote all the dimensions of the human person, has always expressed

itself in the most varied ways. In recent years, one of the special means of intervention has been the

Magisterium of the Roman Pontiffs which, beginning with the Encyclical Rerum Novarum of Leo

XIII as a point of reference,1 has frequently dealt with the question and has sometimes made the

dates of publication of the various social documents coincide with the anniversaries of that first

document.2

to their vocation as responsible builders of earthly society. The Popes have not failed to throw fresh light by means of those messages upon new aspects of the social

doctrine of the Church. As a result, this doctrine, beginning with the outstanding contribution of Leo XIII and

enriched by the successive contributions of the Magisterium, has now become an updated doctrinal "corpus."

It builds up gradually, as the Church, in the fullness of the word revealed by Christ Jesus3 and with the

assistance of the Holy Spirit (cf. Jn 14:16, 26; 16:13-15), reads events as they unfold in the course of history.

She thus seeks to lead people to respond, with the support also of rational reflection and of the human

sciences, to their vocation as responsible builders of earthly society.

PART 2. PRINCIPLES OF ETHICAL WORK AND CRITERIA OF SOCIAL

DEVELOPMENT formulated on the basis of Pope’s John Paul II
