Merry Christmas and welcome to the Parish of Pope St. Pius X. It is always a joyful occasion to welcome visitors to our parish, but during this time of Christmas it seems even more joyful to do so. God has given us this time to celebrate the birth of His Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Perhaps more than any other occasion, Christmas seems to inspire in us a desire to be together enjoying the company of family and friends. Therefore, we pray for those separated from loved ones by distance, the complex circumstanc-es that cause division, and those separated by death. On Christmas Day, Our Savior was born in Bethlehem of Judea. He was born there because as a descendent of David, the King, it was the ancestral home. Bethlehem, aside from being the city of the king, is significant even in its name as it literally means “house of bread.” Even today in Bethlehem at the Church of the Nativity, pilgrims can often venerate an image of the Newborn King placed on a wooden bread platter. The symbolism is clear and easy to understand—Jesus, who one day would call Himself the “Bread of Life,” was born in the house of bread.

This Bread of Life, which we now call the Eucharist, is the central part of our faith. As Catholics, we gather on Sundays to celebrate the re-presentation of this saving act in the Mass. Our Blessed Lord used bread at the Last Supper in the context of a Passover meal, but the Mass is not a re-presentation of the Last Supper; but rather, of the passion, death and resurrection of the Lord. The Sacrifice of Our Lord on the cross happened only once, and it is brought into the present moment by the action of the Mass. It is by this action, which we call a mystery, not because we cannot understand it but because it has been revealed by God, that we receive God’s life in us.

For those who are not Catholic, you are invited to join us anytime to worship God in the Mass. Although we cannot invite you to receive Holy Communion with us, the action of the Lord’s sacrifice brings blessings for all. Those who receive Holy Communion are not simply receiving the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, they are also affirming and accepting all that the Catholic Church teaches and proposes. Could this one day be you? I encourage those Catholics who have left the practice of the faith to consider returning to it and to the Eucharist. For most people, returning to the faith can be as simple as committing to live the Christian faith and making a good Confession. If you have left the practice of the faith, can you honestly say your life is better without the Church? Has stepping away from the Eucharist drawn you closer to Jesus and brought you more peace? Perhaps our Lord is calling you back. Those who are Catholic and have remained in the practice of the faith, I thank God for you. Our Church continues to go through traumatic challenges and experiences and so staying Catholic has not been easy. Keep up the faith! Our Lord needs you to remain faithful to Him so that as He continues to bring blessings to the world through your fidelity, He can bring holiness and wholeness to the Church. These difficult times call not for tepid efforts of faith, but for heroic fidelity to the faith we love. God will help you to remain faithful. I encourage you and invite you to connect with our parish, staying connected has never been easier (see page 7 for details). This special edition bulletin highlights just a few ways available with activities such as biblical and faith studies, charitable activities such as our weekly soup kitchen and events which focus on marriage and family life (including children and youth ministry). Connect with us and help us realize the vision of our holy patron Pope St. Pius X which was, “to restore all things in Christ.” Our Blessed Lord was born so that He could become our bread. He became our bread so that we could have life. It is in the Church that our Lord becomes our bread, and so it is in the Church we must be. Join us.

Merry Christmas!

Fr. Francisco Flores

ADORATION

In a world that seems chaotic, we often seek peace and refuge. As we begin a new year, we hope you will consider resting in the peace that Christ offers you throughout the year — the gift of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Sometimes we can be intimidated to go to Adoration. It is not because we fear being with Jesus in prayer, but often times because we are uncertain what to do in an extended period of prayer. While visiting our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration, we can pray in any number of ways. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Meditate using scripture 2. Read the life of a saint and

pray with him or her 3. Speak to Jesus aware that you

are in His presence and tell Him all that comes to your mind and listen for His response

4. Pray the Rosary 5. Ask for prayers for others 6. Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God.

ADORATION OF THE

BLESSED SACRAMENT Thursdays 9:00 AM-6:00 PM COMMUNAL HOLY HOURS*

(Third Thursday of each month with the exception of weeks of 40 Hour Adoration)

Next 40-Hour Adoration: January 24-26, 2020

“I wasn’t always sure what to do in Adoration, and I slowly learned that God wanted me to

just “be” with Him. Now, I can hardly wait for Thursday to spend that peaceful time with Him.”

Parishioner of Pope St. Pius X

“The time you spend with Jesus in the

Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will

spend on earth.” St. Mother Teresa of

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? . . . “ You shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. . . . .

Hope and Healing Through Our Faith and Service to Others (By the President of the Pope St. Pius X Conference SVDP)

As a child of the 60’s and 70’s, I took to heart the mantra of “don’t trust anyone over 40” and “question everything.” Look-ing back, this was not some philosophical or political view for me, but an excuse to do what I wanted when I wanted. For 30 years, I became a non-practicing Catholic, on occa-sion going to Mass at Christmas and Easter, for the most part as a gift to my parents. Twenty years ago, my lifestyle was

that of a person who used far too much alcohol and tobacco (“half rack” of beer and 2 to 3 packs of cigarettes a day). Stopping either was impossible on my own as the failed attempts proved. One comment from my mother

when she turned from alcohol some 50 years prior was that she was “just sick and tired of being sick and tired.” I began to pray —first to the Blessed Mother for strength and her intercession to our Lord. Then to Jesus asking for for-giveness and help. After a surprisingly short time -- just about a month of daily prayer -- all craving for alcohol was gone. Not only that, the taste of beer was foul in my mouth! Cigarettes, though a bit tougher to quit, came a year later. Miracles and answer to prayers are often not as visible as these but they are there if you open your heart. With the love of Jesus and the intercession of our Blessed Mother, I started on the road to being a practicing Catholic and now serve the Church leading our parish Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This is a time of hope!

MISSIONS OF CHARITY

Each Catholic bears the responsibility of responding in Faith to Jesus’ command to “Love the Lord, your God with all your heart,

soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself”. This directive drives the lay apostolate of Pope St. Pius X Church

to continue pouring themselves out for others and sharing their God-given gifts of time, talent or treasure in diverse and beautiful

ways. Fueled by their love of God and nourished by His Body and Blood at weekly Mass, parishioners set out and serve neighbor.

The Pope St. Pius X Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul “Vincentians” go out two-by-two visiting those in need. Meetings are held the first and third Wednesday of each month in Room 8. To learn more, view the video on our website at https://stpiuscda.org/ssvdp, or join us at one of our meetings. "After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was

about to go. He told them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." Luke 10:1-2

The Pope St. Pius X Friday afternoon meal service creates a space where our life in Christ can be lived out and experienced in community as a meal is prepared, served and shared by members of the parish lay apostolate with guests from the local community. Our primary mission is living the incarnate spirituality of a missionary, of being Christ to others and seeing Christ in in others. Meals are served Fridays from 4:30-5:30pm. All are welcome to join in food service and/or in

preparations which begin at 3:15pm. For details, visit our parish website or call the

parish office at 208-765-5108.

We love volunteering time in the soup kitchen.

There are many people to help. It is fulfilling work and a way for us to give back to the Lord for all

the blessings he has bestowed on us.

. . . . The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mt. 22:36-40

“The poor think of how much more they have than

nothing. Those of us in good shape think about how much

less we have then everything.” This quote is from a book I

read recently. It stuck with me because

over the last couple of years, I’ve shared

time with missionaries from the US and

from Honduras in the little village of

Consolación that we all have in

common. There, I have witnessed a

peace and joy that comes with the poverty of spirit captured

in that quote and spoken about by our Lord in The

Beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

I thank our Latin American neighbors for

this gift of joy and peace they have

ministered to me through our mission:

Unión de Amor (a union of love).

Our gifts to them have been to

build a kindergarten, remodel

their Chapel, replenish their

coffee farms and now (God

willing) to bring clean water to

the village in 2020. It’s

challenging to witness the

grinding poverty of hunger and

thirst, especially in children,

and the despair it can create, especially in parents.

Through Unión de Amor, our Lord gives us the opportunity

to join our sacrifices to their suffering, to walk with them as

they build themselves a future, and to learn of our own

poverty. God is Good. Merry Christmas!

Thanks to the Pope St. Pius X Food Pantry volunteers and to the generous parishioners who donate mountains of food each month, we served the largest number of customers (196) during the month of November since the beginning of the year! Our totals for 2019 from January through November are: 501 visits, 897 adults, 212 teens, 389 children, and 32 Infants, for a total of 1,574 people served! We, who work in the Food Pantry, are blessed to serve customers with needs ranging from unemployment, medical issues (sometimes without any health insurance), grandparents raising grandchil-dren, being homeless, etc. Saying that our hearts are humbled by their presence is just a small part of our daily missions. Six days a week, our Food Pantry delivery crew makes early morning trips to Super 1 on Kathleen Avenue, and, depending on the abundance, delivers perishable items to our church, Second Street Commons, St. Vincent DePaul in midtown, the Union Gospel Mission, and the Coeur d’Alene Food Bank. Some generous parishioners recently donated turkeys, chickens, and a huge amount of pork to fill our freezers. All perishable and nonperishable items stored at our church are distributed not only to our food pantry customers, but also are given to families by Vincentians when they make home visits. The generously donated food is also used for Friday Soup Kitchen meals. Thank God for our volunteers who make each and every day brighter. And to you, our dear parishioners, you just don’t know how much your donations of food and personal care items mean to those who we serve. Thank you and may God bless you always for your kindness.

With gratitude,

Kathy Goodwin

The Pope St. Pius X monthly food collection is the last full weekend of the month. Our next food collection is the weekend of December 28-29.

“I will never forget the man who

hugged me so tightly as tears ran down his cheeks

thanking me profusely for the

ham that I gave him so he could feed his

family for a week. Or the grandma

who was desperate for food for her grandchildren

before she came to our church.”

“You brought us the spirit. You brought us love.”

Our Family Ministry & Catechesis programs encompass a wide range of opportunities for families, couples, and singles of all ages to live a “purposefully Catholic” life. Catechesis involves both nurturing the soul (Sacramental life) and the mind (religious instruction) leading to a deeper conversion to God. Bible studies, small groups, retreats, enrichment opportunities, resources, activities and faith-based organizations are all available as we help build growing disciples of Christ. All these programs come into focus once a month with our “Purposefully Catholic” (PC) nights.

“”Parish weekly bible study has brought the scriptures alive for me! Watching DVDs by well-respected Biblical scholars has most definitely increased my knowledge of the scriptures, and the lively discussions that we have as a group have both challenged me and lifted me up. These parish bible studies have been very helpful to me on my faith journey.” Wednesday AM Bible Study Leader/Participant

“The Atrium is a peaceful, contemplative place for the children to encounter and experience the love of God. Volunteering, I have been amazed how, at such a young age, the children quiet themselves and begin to explore their faith by working with the materials. I saw a child, who with extreme care and purpose, set up the altar. She held up the paten and chalice, reverently imitating what happens in the Mass. With as much care, she carefully replaced all the items in the homemade cabinet.” Teacher Assistant, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

“I like our small groups. Everyone is able to share about things going on in their lives and we’re really able to get to know one another.” High School Youth “ I’ve noticed positive changes in my children, especially in the way they interact with one another at home.” Parent, Middle & High School Youth
