From the desk of

Father Flores

The best thing in the world right now would be to be able to wish each other a Happy Easter in person. The penitential nature of Lent is now left behind us, and we can be happy and together rejoice on this most special of days. Today, we celebrate that great event of Mary Magdalene going to the tomb and finding it empty. Something special, something big had happened. Jesus was no longer in the tomb, and He was no longer dead. Mary Magdalene ran to the apostles to share the news; they in turn ran to the tomb to witness this miracle for themselves. This experience of Jesus, dead and risen is the reason for our joy today. This same news compels us to want to share this news and this joy with others. This news moves us to want to embrace each other heartily and wish each other a Happy Easter. This year, our Easter greetings will have to be done virtually and from a distance. Easter is here and yet it might still feel like the penitential nature of Lent as the dark cloud of the coronavirus pandemic continues to loom over us. Fortunately for you and me, the faith is bigger than this virus. It is bigger than us; it is timeless and it is invincible because our faith is rooted in what we commemorate today—Jesus Christ Our Lord has risen from the dead. Even though the health crisis and its effects are present, we can still rejoice and be joyful each in our own place and in our own way. In his second letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us to set our eyes on what is unseen and not what is seen because what is seen is temporary and what is unseen is eternal. He is, of course, speaking of Our Lord Jesus. On this Easter Day, perhaps no other words can ring more true for you and for me than these. If our eyes are set on what we can see, then today that would be the threat of illness and death, people sick and dying, a ruined economy, Sundays without Mass, no access to the Sacraments and so many other negative things that vie for our attention. Yet today in the midst of all this, the Church says, “Glory to God in the Highest” and “Alleluia” songs of praise, of great joy and promise. You and I can join in the echo of the joy of this great day because our sights are not set on what we can see but on the eternal, the good, the One, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Who knows how long this threat will last and how long our separation will be, but when we are tempted to despair, to sadness or to doubt, remember to look to the eternal, Jesus Christ Our Lord. He Himself modeled this for us in the whole of His earthly life, but even more so in the days that we just completed, the days of His passion. From the end of the Last Supper until He hung dead on the cross, our Lord could look around and see only abandonment, pain, torture, hatred and death; and yet in that final moment He gave us the words that can characterize our own final moments, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” He could say this because His eyes were set on the eternal, God the Father, and not on the darkness and evil that surrounded Him. Today we focus on that empty tomb. We can think of the One who lay in it for us and who conquered death, not for His own sake, but for ours. He knew that life would frighten us. He knew that it would distract us and challenge our belief, and so he invites us to look to Him, the eternal One who alone has the power to save and who draws us to Himself. Whatever darkness may surround us today, however bleak the news may be, look to the eternal and have a blessed and Happy Easter because Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. God Bless You.

In Jesus and Mary,

Father Flores
