From the desk of

Father Flores

Last week I started a short series on a new initiative that we are undertaking to help us all engage more with the faith. This new initiative is known as “Purposefully Catholic,” which is meant to engage parishioners in all stations of life. Purposefully Catholic is a response to the factors that I mentioned last week that compromise how we live and hand on the faith; and they are: a prevalence of poor catechesis, retention of Catholics, a transactional view of the faith and the role of parents in their children’s religious education. Today I wish to address the first factor, a prevalence of poor catechesis. This is not so much a criticism of the material or the process of catechesis, and much less the people involved in catechesis, but of its goal. In the progress of time, our society has become less religious and less tolerant of religion than in the past. Religion is largely seen as a negative thing and this is perhaps most clearly stated by the popular adage of people who claim to be spiritual but not religious. Society, with its norms and morals, no longer supports Christian morals and the Christian way of life. Religion, and in particular Christianity, is seen as the source of division, prejudice and even of war. This has affected how Christians understand their religion and how it is lived. Professing faith in the bold statements of the Catholic Church, which are concrete and definitive, has given way to a tendency to reduce it to emotional and sensational experience. It seems that the goal of catechesis has been to engage emotive and sensational experience (which explains the heavy role of arts and crafts in many religious education programs) rather than being rooted in concrete and definitive terms that require a response. Furthermore, for many years catechesis has been treated as a subject, much as in a school subject; it has been placed in the hands of people, many well intentioned, who do not understand the faith or even live it. Many resources of personnel, money, time and classroom space have been allocated to catechesis in the past thirty to fifty years and the result has been people leaving the Catholic Church in droves, a lessening of faith in the Eucharist, and a lack of understanding when it comes to living as a Catholic in marriage, parenthood and an adult in the faith. It seems that catechesis was more concerned about being relevant in the lives of Christians instead of being an element of transformation. This was perhaps a reaction to seeing so many leave the practice of the faith and religion’s diminishing in society. A key element that has been missing from much of catechesis is that goal of transforming the lives of Chris-tians, showing them how to see the world through the lens of the Church established by the Lord Jesus, and engaging the whole of their lives with what it means to be a disciple of the Lord. Perhaps what has been missing is evangelization. Generations of Catholics, including my own, have been catechized but not evangelized. This reality, coupled with the decline of Christian values and morals in society, has led us to where we are today, a Church with so many of its mem-bers happy to have left it behind and with many of its active and interested members not really knowing or understanding the most basic precepts that comprise our religion. Addressing this conundrum is one of the goals of our current initiative known as Purposefully Catholic. There will be a kickoff the weekend of September 26-27 after each Mass; and, of course, we are on Tuesday nights at 6:00 PM via our parish website. Join us and become Purposefully Catholic.

ASSURANCE OF SALVATION—Part 2 of 2

When someone becomes a Christian, is their ticket to heaven automatically punched, period, end of story? Or does that “ticket” come with any stipulations? Let’s look at the Biblical evidence. In Matthew 7: 21, Jesus says, “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” St. Paul warns against over-confidence in 1 Corinthians 10:12, “… whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.” And in 1 Corinthians 9:27, St. Paul talks about himself saying, “… for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.” Cer-tainly not the words of a man who knows that his ticket is punched. The Catholic Church has always taught that salvation requires perseverance in faith. The Catechism says, “… nor will anyone obtain eternal life ‘but he who endures to the end.’” Her teachings echo the words of St. Paul to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:12, “… if we persevere, we shall also reign with Him. But if we deny Him, He will deny us.” For further study: CCC 161, Matthew 7: 21, 1 Corinthians 10: 1, 1 Corinthians 9: 24-27, Matthew 24:13, 2 Timothy 2: 12 Excerpts from A Minute in the Church, by Gus Lloyd, with permission. A Message from Deacon Chris In last week’s bulletin, Father reminds us that “living a Christian life must include ser-vice to those in need.” Indeed, if we are to Restore All Things in Christ, we simply must start with ourselves and our own restoration through a proper and wholehearted Christian life. Pope St. Pius X kept a book at his bedside that I have reflected upon (and quoted) from time to time. Its title is, The Soul of the Apostolate written at the turn of the century by a Cistercian named Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard OS-CO. He makes this connection beautifully:

“The apostolic flame has been passed on by Jesus to His Church, which is the gift of His love, which diffuses His life, manifests His truth, and shines with the splendor of His sanctity. Burning with the selfsame love, the Mystic Spouse of Christ carries on, down through the ages, the apostolic work of her divine Model.”

This quote reminds us that our motivation, our strength and our joy in serving others flows from Jesus Christ Himself, through His Church and into our very being as Christian Disciples. Who we become in Him, as Dom Chautard tells us, manifests in the work we do in our various apostolates within our Missions of Charity. The work itself is good. BUT, the higher good, the good that we as a Parish are called to share, is Christ Himself. Sharing His divine love. Acknowledging and celebrating the Truth of the dignity of the human person (especially the poor whose dignity is obscured in this life). And, bathing this world in the light of Christ in a way that only His disci-ples can. This is the work of the Parish, the work of the Apostolate. It is work that nobody else can do. Other non-profit organizations, charities, governmental and non-governmental agencies can do good things. Only the Christian Disciple can make Christ visible and active in the world, incarnating the Good that is the precedent for all good things.

Peace, Deacon Chris

September 6, 2020 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel…” EZEKIEL 33:7

Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, many of us are not generous in proportion to the gifts we have been given. How often do we give at the minimum level required? Remember, the Lord calls us to stewardship, where we nur-ture and develop our gifts. He calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, especially the one that means the most to us.
