Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Desk of the Chaplain: Divine Mercy Sunday Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska
Sister Faustina was a young, uneducated, nun
in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of
Our Lady of Mercy in Cracow, Poland during
the 1930's. She came from a very poor family
that struggled on their little farm during the
years of World War I. She had only three
years of very simple education, so hers were
the humblest tasks in the convent, usually in
the kitchen or garden. However, she received
extraordinary revelations or messages from
Our Lord Jesus. Jesus asked Sr. Faustina to record these
experiences, which she compiled in notebooks. These notebooks
are known today as the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska
and the words contained within are God's loving message of
Divine Mercy.
Sr. Faustina's Diary sparked a great movement, and a strong and
significant focus on the mercy of Christ. Pope John Paul II
canonized Sr. Faustina in 2000 making her the "first saint of the
new millennium." Speaking of Sr. Faustina and the importance
of the message contained in her Diary, the Pope call her "the
great apostle of Divine Mercy in our time."
The Message of the Divine Mercy that Sr. Faustina received
from the Lord was not only directed toward her personal growth
in faith but also toward the good of the people. With the
command of our Lord to paint an image according to the pattern
that Sr. Faustina had seen, came also a request to have this image
venerated, first in the Sisters' chapel, and then throughout the
world. The same is true with the revelations of the Chaplet. The
Lord requested that this Chaplet be said not only by Sr. Faustina,
but by others: "Encourage souls to say the Chaplet that I have
given you."
The same is true of the revelation of the Feast of Mercy. "The
Feast of Mercy emerged from my very depths of tenderness. It is
my desire that it solemnly be celebrated on the first Sunday after
Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the fount of
My Mercy." These requests of the Lord given to Sr. Faustina
between 1931 and 1938 can be considered the beginning of the
Divine Mercy Message and Devotion in the new forms.
However, it is important to remember that this message of The
Divine Mercy, revealed to St. Faustina and to our present
generation is not new. It is a powerful reminder of who God is
and has been from the very beginning. This truth that God is in
His very nature Love and Mercy Itself, is given to us by our
Judeo-Christian faith and God’s self-revelation. The veil that has
hidden the mystery of God from eternity was lifted by God
Himself. In His goodness and love God chose to reveal Himself
to us, His creatures, and to make known His eternal plan of
salvation. This He had done partly through the Old Testament
Patriarchs, Moses and the Prophets, and fully through His only
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. In the person of Jesus Christ,
conceived through power of the Holy Spirit and born of the
Virgin Mary, the unseen God was made visible.

Coffee & Donuts: Greg and Karen Zanger Family. Collection
Counters: Mark Rankin & Leo Zanger. The chaplet of the Divine
Mercy will be publicly recited after the 8 AM Mass instead of the
Leonine Prayers and, after the choir receives communion, at the

recitation at the usual conditions as explained in last week
Bulletin.
Monday, April 8: The Annunciation to Mary. Masses at 7 AM
and 12:10 PM. This first class feast is usually celebrated on
March 25th. However since this year it fell during Holy Week, it
had to be reported to the first available day. Holy Week and
Easter Week are focused on the Passion and Resurrection of the
Lord and no saint can be honored during these days. With this
feast, we also celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation, God
becoming flesh, assuming our human nature in the womb of the
Blessed Virgin Mary through the operation of the Holy Spirit.
Tuesday through Thursday: No 7 AM Mass. Our Chaplain
will be attending the Priest Recollection in Lincoln, NE
organized by FSSP.
Sunday, April 14, Good Shepherd Sunday: Masses at 8 & 11

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and Enrollment into the
Brown Scapular (Our Lady of Mt Carmel).
Deo Gratias! We look forward each year to celebrating Holy
Week and yet we dread it as there is so much work to do! The
ceremonies require much preparation and I am so grateful to all
of you who have helped. Thanks to all who helped clean the
church and set the altar of repose. The main altar was
breathtaking when it appeared during the Gloria, thanks in great
part to our florist Sherry. The complex ceremonies require some
intense study from our MCs, Alex (Thursday), Schuyler (Friday),
Drew (Sunday), and especially Dominic (Easter Vigil) and many
altar boy practices. It is a challenge for both our regular
sacristans (Cindy & Carlene) and our extraordinary ones, “the
Chucks” (Chuck & Dan) who make sure vestments and other
items are available during the Vigil.
The greatest challenge is for our choir, which this year had to
tackle all the singing without the help of Seminarian Jason Stone,
on assignment in another parish. A great thanks to all our choir
members who spent hours practicing, to our soloist Jennifer (who
sang in spite of a bout of flu) and our Music Director Charlotte
Stroot who sacrificed family time to be here on Easter Sunday.
Don’t miss the last concert of the season “American Classics” by
the Quincy Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 13 at 3 PM.
Charlotte will be honored for 50 years with the Orchestra on that
day.
