Welcome to St. Rose
Did you know that the Council Vatican II declared that
―The use of the Latin language, with due respect to
particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites‖? At
St. Rose, it is certainly the case. However, you may not
be used to Latin so it will take you some time to get
familiar with the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.
We provide you with some brief indications below but
do not hesitate to ask for help. St. Rose Latin Mass
Chaplaincy is a Catholic community established by the
Bishop of Springfield in the fall of 2008.
On Sunday, you may follow Mass with a red booklet
(pews) and a Proper leaflet (vestibule). Hymnals are also
available for Sung Masses (vestibule). On Weekdays,
you need a daily Latin -English Missal to follow Mass.
They are available at Poppe’s (1886 Maine, Quincy).
You may also follow the ordinary with a red booklet.
There are collection or donation envelopes available in
pews and vestibule for visitors. If you wish to receive a
tax receipt or/and be kept informed on the life and
activities of our community at St. Rose, make sure you
give us your name and address. To join the chaplaincy,
call the church office.
On Sunday, please do come to the hall after Mass to
meet the community. Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Chaplain’s Desk: Second Sunday of Lent
The sacrament of Penance is the sacrament of the return to
God. We make penance when we turn away from creatures to
return to our creator. We do this usually through
mortification: fasting, abstinence, depriving ourselves of some
good, fighting to extirpate a vice, striving to cultivate a virtue,
all things which help us turn towards God. The prime aspect is
not the difficulty but the return to God. True contrition for our
sins, in one hand, and love of God, on the other hand, helps us
to understand our tendency to attach ourselves to earthly
things. God created us out of nothing and gave us everything
we have. He sent His only Son to redeem us and call us to
share his happiness for all eternity.
The virtue of penitence is not only about corporal matters –to
help us master our body—but also spiritual: the struggle
against our self-love and our pride. Pride insinuates itself in
everything we do. Pride makes us negligent and slothful in
our spiritual duties.
In the sacrament of penance, by the confession of our sins, we
get in touch with Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Indeed the
priest is only the representative and the instrument of Jesus in
the confessional who is the only savior and judge. We should
try to see this sacrament with the eyes of faith: an encounter
with Christ himself through the mediation of the confessor.
God likes to use imperfect instruments to show all the more
his power. Regular confession is a healthy practice for our
spiritual life. Confession is not easy! Its very difficulty helps
us to have a true contrition for our sins. However, it becomes
easier when we consider it supernaturally and practice it
regularly. Without regular confession, we run the risk to loose
the sense of sin. The late pope John Paul II has often
reminded us that one of the great tragedies of our time is the
loss of the conscience of the gravity of sin.
We are in a time where subjectivism is rampant. Many act
according to their subjective conscience without connection to
the objective law of God: ―I think it is good, thus it is good‖.
We have a great capacity to deceive ourselves. The sacrament
of penance is the remedy to subjectivism as we submit
ourselves to the judgment of the priest who receives special
graces, graces of state, to perform his duty in the confessional.
The priest judges the contrition of the penitent and grants the
absolution accordingly. Thus, the penitent has the certitude
that he has been forgiven by God. Unfortunately our sins have
consequences on others sometimes and on us always. These
consequences on ourselves, we fight them through the virtue
of penitence, through mortification. The ―penance‖ the priest
gives us to do is an essential part of the sacrament; it has a
healing effect in virtue of the sacrament.

commitment to the pro-life cause. Dig into your pockets,
purses, and piggy banks to contribute to the Right to Life of
Adam County ―Pennies for Life‖ campaign. Each church
member, children as well, is encouraged to donate 1 cent
for each year of his or her life, in gratitude to God for the
gift of life. A big glass jar will be in the vestibule next Sunday
for this collection. Thank you for helping spread the respect-
life message, particularly through allowing the Right to Life
of Adams County, 109 N 8th St, Quincy, to purchase and
distribute additional pro-life and pro-chastity materials.
Sunday, April 3, 4th Sunday of Lent: There will be a second
collection for Catholic Relief Services. CRS distributed food
to nearly 900,000 people in Haiti after the earthquake and
currently provides food to more than 90,000 students in 270
schools and 100 orphanages.
A VERY BIG THANK YOU for all the generous people
who volunteered their time to work the St. Patrick's
dinner and bring in desserts. This event requires a lot of
work and time but I hope it was a lot of fun for everyone
involved. It is a big fundraiser for our community. As usual
there are always some left over… If you are interested to buy
some of the corned beef, come after both Masses to the hall on
Sunday.
