Standard Fuel Cell 101(Everything we want you to think about standard fuel cells before you call)
1. What type of fuel will be used (gasoline, alcohol)?2. What is the application, what type of racing?3. What size cell do you need? (NOTE STANDARD SIZES
HAVE CHANGED) 4. Will you be racing where a certification such as SFI or
FIA FT3 is required?5. Will you be filling at the cell or at a fender or with a

Custom Fuel Cell 101(Everything we want you to think about custom fuel cells before you call)
1. Please read Standard Fuel Cell 101 first.2. Polymer (hard “rubber”) custom cells are not
available.3. Fuel Safe Custom Works cells are handmade, and
capacity and complexity are the biggest factors in determining cost.
4. We will require a drawing, model, mockup, or can to build a custom cell.
5. If we are making a bladder to fit your can, you must read and acknowledge the “Customer Container Release”. This can be found at www.fuelsafe.com or call for a faxed or emailed copy.
6. Orientation of the cell as installed in the vehicle is crucial information; please label the drawing accordingly.
7. All plates must be located precisely on drawing. 8. All items on plates must be located and clearly
identified.9. We can draw your cell for you based on your sketch,
but an engineering fee will apply. 10. We need to know if your drawing is for the can or
bladder. If for the can, are they inside or outside dimensions?
11. All plates require a minimum of 0.75” from the edge of plate to edge of the can.
12. Nipples are available but not recommended.13. Internal items such as collectors, pumps, etc. must
be identified. 14. If you know the Fuel Safe part number for items used
in your drawing, please feel free to use them on the drawing.
15. Mounting bracket holes will NOT be drilled by Fuel Safe.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Fuel Cell VocabularyAlcohol - (Methanol, Ethanol) this fuel requires specific materials and aluminum hardware to be treated. This material can be harmful to certain materials such as safety foam and certain bladder materials.
Baffle (bladder material) - Deflects fuel flow in a cell to an area you want it to go for better performance.
Baffling (safety foam)- Slows fuel cell slosh while providing explosion resistance. All Fuel Safe gasoline cells come with foam.
B.C. (Bolt Circle) - A measurement from across a round plate, bolt center to bolt center.
Bottom Ring - In Sprint Cells, a 6 x 10 plate mounted in the cell on the vertical face behind the rear-end.
Bung - A weld in threaded fitting that will accept AN or pipe fittings. Must specify AN or NPT.
Can - The container or enclosure that provides containment and protection to a bladder.
Cell - A safety device, also known as fuel cell, which can also be used to enhance performance of the vehicle.
Check Ball (Check Valve)- A device which allows flow in one direction only.
Collector/Surge Tank - An area within a cell that traps or contains fuel to ensure steady supply and maximum usage.
Dry Break Valves - Valves which form a relatively leak proof connection for rapid refueling (Female on vehicle, Male on fuel supply).
External Flange - Can flange that extends outward and provides a flat surface for bolting the can lid to the can body.
Fill Plate - Bolted assembly that typically has a fill cap or hose attachment for filling a tank.
4 x 6 - A standard size, 12 bolt, oval plate, which actually covers a 4” by 6” hole, the plate measures closer to 5” x 7”.
Heel Flapper - A check valve used in standard fill applications.
Height - The measurement from top to bottom of the bladder or container listed.
Hydrocarbon Fuels (Gasoline, Diesel, AVGAS) - A fuel which requires specific materials to be used in the construction of a fuel cell. This fuel will damage alcohol-specific bladders.
Internal Flange - 1.25” can flange that extends inward to provide a flat surface to bolt on a can access cover (may be on any side, typically on top).
Length - The measurement from right to left of the cell in the car (typically cells are mounted in a vehicle with the longest dimension left to right, your application may differ).
Nipple - A ballistic fabric reinforced flexible outlet or inlet into which a tube can be clamped.
Nutring- A device on the inside of bladder openings that has threads to accept bolts securing a plate.
Pickup (Pick-up, p-u) - The hose and/or fitting through which fuel will be delivered to engine.
Raw - Untreated plates and fittings, no finish applied (should not be used with alcohol).
Remote Fill - A cell which is filled anywhere other than with a cap mounted directly on the cell.
Return - Fitting or hose through which excess fuel is sent back to a cell.
Sender - Fuel level sender, typically an electronic item that sends a signal to your fuel level gauge.
6 x 10 - A standard size 24 bolt oval plate, which actually covers a 6” by 10” hole, the plate measures closer to 7.5” x 11.75”.
Shoebox Lid - Can lid that slips over the perimeter of the can, like a shoe box.
Standard Fill - A cell which is filled through a cap mounted directly on the cell.
Top Pick Up - In Sprint Cells, where the pick up fitting is mounted via a special fitting above the rear-end of the car.
Width - The measurement from front to back of a the cell in the car (typically cells are mounted in a vehicle with the longest dimension left to right, your application may differ).
