and will also eature occasional videoand other exciting animated graphics.
A great example can be seen with
our Tasmania drive story, where PCM
customers Sam and Josie have their
circumnavigation o Tasmania tracked.
Elsewhere in Torque, we start our
three-part series tracing the history
o the iconic Porsche 911, as part othe 50th anniversary o this benchmark
sports car. I think youll enjoy the

his sel belie and perseverance.
We eature our support o Trinity
Grammar in their involvement in theRACV Energy Breakthrough Program.
The all new Cayman is the ocus

Completely re-developed, the third
generation Cayman has been lauded
by motoring writers around the world.
Always a beautiully balanced car, the
third generation Cayman is lower andlonger, lighter and aster, more ecient
and yet more powerul than beore.
With a longer wheelbase, wider track
and larger wheels that urther enhance
the already sprightly perormance o
this classic mid-engine sports car, the
new Cayman breaks new ground in all
round driving perormance, economy
and design aesthetics. In act the new
Cayman consumes up to 15% less
uel per 100 km than the previous
model, with new uel consumption
gures o 7.7 l/100 km and 8.0
l/100 km respectively or the Cayman
and Cayman S variants (depending
upon selected transmission).
The base model Cayman is powered by
a 2.7 litre fat six-cylinder engine with
275 hp (202 kW), and accelerates
rom zero to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds
(depending on the equipment), on
its way to a top speed o 266 km/h.
The Cayman S runs a 3.4 litre engine
that produces 325 hp (239 kW)
and can accelerate rom zero to100 km/h in as little as 4.7 seconds,
with a top speed o 283 km/h. Both
models have the traditional manual
six-speed transmission or they
can be optioned with seven-speed
PDK, enabling aster acceleration
together with better uel economy.
There are numerous upgrades or the
new model, including Adaptive Cruise
Control (ACC), which controls theLighter, lower, more efcient and more powerul than ever.
The all new Porsche Cayman is a simply stunning drivers car.

distance to the car ahead in trac and
vehicle speed. Another new optional
eature or the Cayman is the keyless
Entry & Drive system, and specially
developed Burmester sound system.
Like its sot top Boxster sibling, the all
new Cayman is more distinctive than
ever, with a purposeul sporty stance,
marked by precise lines and razor-sharp sculpted edges. These serve
to emphasise the cars low, extended
silhouette, where the windscreen is
shited orward and the roofine sweeps
urther back than beore. The extended
wheelbase with shorter overhangs
and 18-inch and 19-inch diameter
wheels with larger rolling circumerence
are identiying visual characteristics
o the Caymans enhanced driving
perormance. Especially expressive
are the dynamic recesses in the doors,
which guide induction air into the
distinctive air scoops on the rear side
panels and then directly to the engine.
Viewed rom the ront, the Cayman
is marked by its dominant cooling air
inlets, whilst at the back o the car
we now see the unique low rear lid, made o aluminium with wrap-around
edges or the rear section o the car.
Mounted directly to this rear lid is the
thin blade o the rear spoiler. It rises
up higher and at a steeper angle than
the similar spoiler on the Boxster.
Orders are being taken or both
Cayman models now, and carsare expected to arrive in late April.

What does a girl do, when on the eve o her husbands
planned retirement, ater 40 years o working or the
one company, he is negotiating his entitlements andcontractual arrangements, and emotional issues come
into play? Well, she buys her man a brand new Porsche
(911 4S) and books a our week holiday to Tasmania
that will take them around the entire Apple Isle in style.
With excitement and a little
trepidation we drive the new baby
onto the Spirit o Tasmania. We sail
down Port Phillip Bay viewing the
landmarks rom St Kilda to Portsea
bathed in a golden sunset. Bass
Strait is as smooth as a millpond.
Our trip around Tasmania starts at
the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm
between Devonport and Deloraine
where ater breakast, we skirt
Launceston, driving up the east side othe Tamar River Valley, to Georgetown

with its convict-built settlement and
lighthouse, then cross the river at
Batman Bridge and onto our destination
o Beauty Point. The Tamar Valleyis winemaking country, so we visit
many wineries and restaurants that
aord beautiul views. Another day
trip involves visiting the Seahorse
Farm in Beauty Point where they
are bred or research, then we head
o-road in the Narawntapu National
Park with its huge sand hills and
Carribean-coloured ocean. No-onecan believe we are driving on these
unsealed roads, but Sam says with
the 4WD we wont get bogged.
We stay overnight in Launceston beore
our our day Bay o Fires guided walk
that commences on the north-east tip
o Tasmania in the Mt William National
Park. Next stop is Swansea wherewe base ourselves or three days at
Avalon Retreat, an architecturally-
designed holiday rental with its own
private beach. We are greeted every
aternoon by the local dolphin pod in
Great Oyster Bay. The seaside towns o
St Helens and Bicheno, the FreycinetPeninsula and Wine Glass Bay are
short drives along gently winding
roads where we pick up resh seaood
and pop into wineries or supplies.
The sinuous drive down the east
coast on the A3 via Triabunna to
Hobart rewards us with picturesque
scenery, quaint shing ports, the
step o point to Maria Island and
miles o poppies growing in elds.
Four nights in Hobart isnt enough
time to see everything, with day trips
to Port Arthur, Bruny Island and
the Huon Peninsula on oer, along
with others like Mount Wellington.
A visit to MONA the Museum o Oldand New Art is a must. We take the
erry rom Constitution Dock, crossing
the Derwent and our rst glimpse
shows that the Museum itsel is a
work o art. Most o the gallery space
is underground and the sandstone
interior is let exposed in many areas,
providing a sense o entombment.
Ater a great lunch in the wine bar,
we venture back to Constitution Dock
and the Henry Jones Hotel. We
recommend six nights in Hobart.
Leaving Hobart we appreciate theextra horsepower as we drive north-
west towards Lake St Clair and the
Cradle Mountains National Park. First
stop is Derwent Bridge to visit The
Wall in the Wilderness one mans
lie work carving the history o this
area rom gigantic 3 metre high Huon
Pine panels that stretch or over 100
metres. The oggy road winds throughrugged mountain and lake country and
Strahan on the west coast becomes
our base or three nights. Over our
days we see Macquarie Harbour by
catamaran, the Gordon River by kayak,
and the Western Wilderness by train
and a 4WD Piners and Miners Tour.
Our next stop is Boat Harbour on thenorth coast. From the well preserved
old mining town o Zeehan, we head

plenty o bends and great driving,
with a precipitous drop rom Waratah
(hard on the brakes). We then power
back to the Murchison Highway
and through the Hellyer Gorge
another Targa Tasmania stage.
Boat Harbour should be another
Noosa, but the crystal clear water is
reezing, even on a 30 degree day, so
its destined to keep its relaxed bro
shack ambience. A day trip to Stanleyreveals painted wooden houses, a
bluestone port area and the walk up
the Nut rewards with views over Bass
Strait and reshly caught craysh.
Our next destination is Cradle
Valley, but Sheeld is worth a stop
to appreciate the murals depicting
the towns past on most buildingsin the town. The 911 4S loves the
winding drive up into the National
Park and we appreciate the eortless
power. The park oers day walks or
all tness levels through towering
orest to steep tracks with Cradle
Mountain as the backdrop.
Our nal stop is Mole Creek, at
the base o the Western Tiers, 50
kilometres south o Devonport, to seethe caves. The river running through the
Marakoopa Cave heightens the senses,
but the most spectacular ormations
are in the King Solomon Cave with
its cathedral o futed and brightly
coloured stalagmites and stalactites.
We drive into the hold o the Spirit
and the car is lthy. A ellow passengercongratulates us or taking the car o
road shes not just a pretty ace!

INSIGHT

We have heard that you have
quite a story within PCM...
I started o washing cars at PCM
in June 2000. Ater six months I
progressed to car detailing, then usedcar sales and nally new car sales.
How did you get your frst job here?
I got the car washing job through a
riend who was working here. I had
the interview with the service manager
and he said yes, youre hired. I turned
up to start the next day and that
service manager was not there, so
the new manager said to me what
are you doing here? and I said Im
here or the car washing position.
I started car detailing about six
months ater that or roughly two
years and then I started managing
the detailing department.
I had always wanted to sell cars.
I kept asking to get a job in sales,
however I had no experience.
I then oered to sell cars on a Saturday
without pay which allowed me to
build my selling experience. It took a
little while, however eventually I started
to sell some cars on Saturdays.
Ater two years, I was oered a ull
time job in used car sales by Peter
Sullivan. Then Piero oered me a job
in new car sales I have been selling
new cars or about 7 years now.
What drove you to succeed urther?
Ive always enjoyed dealing with
people. I was lucky because we usedto run a lot o drive days and my job
was to clean the vehicles. I got to

talk about Porsche and get up close
to the cars. That ultimately worked
very well in developing how to sell.
What are the most rewarding sales?
For me, the nal part o delivery
and hand over and seeing
peoples reaction to their new
Porsche its a great moment.
And unny stories?
Beore Christmas a good customer
came in whose wie really wanted
a car. He rang me and asked meto play along Ill order the car but
she cant know. We had a vehicle
in stock. He told his wie that they
had missed out she was quite
upset. I had to tell her that the car
was going to arrive in April next year.
Then the day came. He called his
wie and said he had broken down in
ront o PCM, so they walked into the
show room. I arranged a big bow on
the car. She had a look, looked at me,
then at the car again and then at her
husband, and exclaimed, is that my
car?. He said, Merry Christmas. She
genuinely didnt know the whole time.
Tell us about some o the exciting
opportunities youve enjoyed at PCM
I did the Great Ocean Road Escape
the road was closed or the event it
was an amazing drive. Ive also done
Classic Adelaide, which included
driving our days through the Adelaide
Hills on some antastic roads.
I have been to Germany twice now,
visiting all o the actories and driven
some GT3s on the race track.
Outside o PCM
I have two children Will is nearly two
and Harrison is nearly ve. I spend
a lot o time with them. I do a lot o
bike riding as well, so I can be ound
on Beach Road three or our mornings
a week. I have been doing it or years
and used to do it at a national level.
Do you own a Porsche?
Ive owned couple. I had a 911 Turbo,
a 1984 model, which I loved. Then kids
come along and baby seats dont t
lie changes! So the next step was a
Cayenne. Where the opportunity arises,
there is always a Porsche in the garage.
And i not or your kids, which model
would you choose or yoursel?
I have a very sot spot or 911s,
so the current 911 Turbo PDK in
black would be the car or me.
What new releases are
you excited about?
The 911 Turbo and GT3 releases
are both very exciting models.
Where to rom here Andrew?
Finding more time to get back into
bike riding and probably start getting
competitive with that. Here at PCM,
I love selling cars, but there is alwaysthe progression to management,
so that is probably the next step.

INNOVATION
12
This is the frst in a year
long series o stories about
the iconic Porsche 911,
which celebrates its 50year anniversary in 2013.
For ve decades the 911 has been
the heart and soul o the Porsche
brand. Few other cars in the world
can look back on such a long tradition
o design and image continuity. The
Porsche 911 is arguably one o the
worlds most recognised marques.
To celebrate, Porsche is sending
a special 911 on a world tour
that will include Australia and
its best known landmarks.
The 911 has been an inspiration
or sports car enthusiasts since its
debut (as the 901) at the rankurt
IAA International Automotive Show
in September 1963. Today, it is
considered the quintessential sports
car. A car design with an enviable
heritage that continues to evolve
without losing its distinctive orm.
The 911 is the central point o
reerence or all other Porsche series.
From the Cayenne to the Panamera,
every Porsche is the most sporting car
in its segment and each one carries
a piece o the 911 philosophy.
Over 820,000 911s have been sold,
including almost 10,000 in Australia,
making it the most successul sports
car in the world. For each o its
seven generations, the engineers anddesigners have reinvented it and rened

it, demonstrating the power o the
brand and ongoing belie in the core
principles behind the original concept.
Like no other, the 911 reconciles
apparent contradictions such assportiness and everyday practicality,
tradition and innovation, exclusivity
and social acceptance, design and
unctionality, immense perormance
and economy (especially true
o the 997 and 991 series).
Ferry Porsche best described its
unique qualities: The 911 is the onlycar you could drive on an Arican
saari or at Le Mans, to the theatre
or through New York City trac.
The Porsche 911 has always been
distinguished by its advanced
technology. Many o the ideas in the
rst 911 were conceived on the race
track. The 911 was committed toperormance with motor racing as
its most important test. Two thirds
o Porsches 30,000 race victories
to date are notched up by the 911.
Anniversary Celebrations
The 50th anniversary o this iconic
sports car is ocus or 2013. A variety
o anniversary events are planned, starting with the Retro Classics in
Stuttgart. From March 7-10 the Porsche
Museum is eaturing our exhibits: an
early model 911 Turbo Coup, a 911
Cabriolet study rom 1981, a 1997
street version 911 GT1 and the pre-
series Type 754 T7. This chassis by
Proessor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche
was a milestone on the way to the911 design. Porsche is also sending
an authentic 1967 model 911 on a
world tour, which will include Australia.
Follow the cars progress across ve
continents at porsche.com/ollow-911
The Porsche Museum is celebrating
50 years o the Porsche 911 rom
June 4th to September 29th with
an exhibition eaturing the history
and development o the 911. Themuseums own publishing house,
Edition porsche-Museum, will publish
an anniversary book titled 911x911.
The First 911 (1963) Birth o a Legend
As the successor to the Porsche 356,
the 911 won the hearts o sports car
enthusiasts. The prototype was unveiled
at the Frankurt IAA Motor Show in
1963 as the 901, and renamed the
911 or its market launch in 1964.
Its air-cooled, six-cylinder boxer engine
delivered 128 hp (94 kW), giving it an
impressive top speed o 131 mph (210
km/h). In 1966, Porsche presented
the 158 hp (116 kW) 911 S the rst
to eature orged alloy wheels romFuchs. Between these releases was
a our-cylinder Porsche 912 or those
who liked to take things a little slower.
The 911 Targa with its distinctive
stainless steel roll bar, debuted in
late 1966 as the worlds rst ever
saety cabriolet. The semi automatic
Sportomatic our-speed transmission
joined the line-up in 1967. With the
911 T o the same year, and the laterE and S variants, Porsche became
the rst German manuacturer
to comply with strict US exhaust
emission control regulations.
The 911 became more powerul as
displacement increased, initially to
2.2 litres (1969) and later to 2.4 litres
(1971). The Carrera RS 2.7 o 1972with 207 hp (152 kW) engine and
weighing less than 1000 kg remains
a dream sports car to this day. Its
distinctive ducktail was the worlds
rst rear spoiler on a production car.
Rejoin the Porsche 911 50 year
celebration story in the next issue o
Torque, where we explore the secondgeneration G-Series, the 964 and 993.

We spoke to students Mark Reich

and Design & Technology teachers
Foster Adem and Graeme Wiggins.
Foster: Its a composite project
there is teacher and student input.
Its very sophisticated technology.
Its a pedal/electric so we got help
to engineer the electrical side o it.
Martin: Its taken almost 10 years
to get to [this] point.
Graeme: In previous years, aspects
o the project have been more
competitive. This race represented
the most cohesive teamwork and
strategy wed ever taken to the event.
These cars were designed and built
by students. They had sta assistance,
but both were designed in CAD and
we used those design les or thesteel abrication and skins. It was like
assembling a Lego set. The students
100% own the design process.
Martin: For costs, we base it onhow much the students raise in
sponsorship. At the event we were
discussing [sponsorship] with other
teams, and they got $500-$600.
We raised in excess o $10,000!
Tom: Porsche Cars Australia supplied
us with a support vehicle, a trailer
[and] some marquees or the pits. We
developed t-shirts with our sponsors.
At 1pm, the boys were on the grid.
The younger students managed the
driver change, tyre and battery changes
until 11pm; the older students took

speed o 40 km/h. The drivers were
wired up to a radio and the pit crew
had laptops to analyse perormance.
Conserving battery lie was critical.
Mark: I you [drain the battery] you
would either have to change the driver
and battery, which takes time, or
keep going without the battery which
means your times would get slower.
We were told to use the brake as little
as possible. I you dont deceleratewith your brake it means you keep on
using the power [the battery] gave you.
Tom: When the race started it
was pretty hot on the track and we
also had to wear thermals and ull
ace helmets. When I got out o the
vehicle ater about 9 laps, I was
really over-heated. I had a wholeteam o mothers bringing water and
Gatorade. Everyone plays a part.
Mark: There was an emphasis
on teamwork. We needed to make
sure we were keeping up our times,
making sure you were hydrated andworking as hard as you can. You
need to make sure youre helping
each other. You really eel the atigue
ater the rst ew laps. I needed to
make sure that I kept putting in the
work, so that I kept the team going.
There was also the mental
atigue as well making sure youwerent blowing o at someone
else because you were tired.
Tom: The teachers were a massive
infuence, making sure that we are
doing everything to the rules. The
program could not run without the
parental support we have. We couldnt
get success out o the program withoutpeople like Martin helping out.
Award Process
Mark: We are encouraged to learn as
much as we can as we are tested on
our knowledge o the vehicle. We won
every area we knew about the cars,
how they were built and the strategy.
Graeme: The race only counts
or 25% o the win its about
having a comprehensive knowledge
o sustainable practices and
energy management.
Marks car Shake n Bake was the

Open category and Toms car This Way
