PORT ELLIOT BOWLING CLUB NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2021 Glynis Carmichael – Sales and Operations Manager – Chiton I am at the village on a Monday/Wednesday/Thursday from 9am until 4.30pm M: 0429 847 711 E: [email protected] A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The 2021/2022 Thursday and Saturday Pennant season is about to commence. All members participating in Pennants I wish you all the best for a successful season. Those members who mainly compete in Mid-week competitions and Club Tournaments I trust that you also have success with your bowls. During my absence from the Club during the previous three and a half months, Libby Henschke and Ron Lind have been actively holding the reins on my behalf. Thank you both for your assis- tance. To all those members who during the winter months have been looking after the greens, running competitions, opening the bar, cleaning and general maintenance and seeking new sponsors, plus a sundry of other things done around the Club, to ensure that we are ready for Summer Bowls a BIG THANK YOU to all. As we have a number of new members to the Club please make yourself known to them, en- sure that they feel as though they are welcome, and invite them to participate in tournaments, social bowls and other activities within the Club. One major factor for this Club having success off the Green is due to the many volunteers who put a number of hours performing a variety of roles within the Club. In the short time I have been back it is very pleasing to see some new members taking on some of these duties. If you want to make a contribution in volunteering in some manner please have a chat to a Board member or Program Coordinator. With the retirement of our Bar Manager, now is the opportunity for an individual or a team to take on this position. Have a chat to Jim and find out what is required. Visitors to the Club, who are enjoying a Friday Night tea, welcome.

Port Elliot Bowling Club Season Opening 2021 – 2022

The 2021 - 2022 pennant season was opened on Saturday the11th of September.

The ceremony was attended by the PEBC club patron Mr Phil Dodd and the Mayor

of Alexandrina council Mr Keith Parks who officially opened the pennant season.

The opening ceremony was conducted on “A” green with all attending club mem-

bers dressed in their club uniforms which made for an impressive club photo.

The traditional season opening bowls were rolled by Sandra Monk and Ron Lind.

After the opening formalities were completed all in attendance enjoyed an after-

noon tea prepared by our hard working kitchen staff.

THANKS MACCA

With the conclusion of the very successful and long running Maclin 2 day Men's

carnival this year we would like to recognise the fantastic contribution that John

Macnamara has made to the Port Elliot Bowling Club.

He has donated a total of $36000 to the Club as prize money to attract 1344

bowlers from dozens of different Clubs who bowled in excess 10,700 games over

the 12 years.

Macca's very generous contribution put more than $156,000 into our coffers by

way of his seed funding, bowler entry fees, bar takings and raffles over the 12 year

period.

Macca - in every sense of the word, you are a true champion of the

Port Elliot Bowling Club.

“FOUNDATION 100 CLUB"

The PEBC Board recently launched the Foundation 100 Club initiative.

This provides Club members, families, friends and others to contribute $100 (or more) annually to part sponsor a tournament or to support various programs at the Club.

The Club thanks Peter and Anthea Faull on becoming our first F 100 members.

Call Phil Hollow on 0435 942842 or [email protected] for more information or to sign up.

A Call to Arms

Dear fellow Bowlers, please bear with me, as I have a tale to tell.

It happened on a sunny(ish) Saturday afternoon.

Being a female person of somewhat more than 21 years old, my wobbly knees and creaking hips called me to rest for a short while,

Upon looking towards the seats, I saw (gasp! Horror!) a row of bowling bags, with their wheels comfortably resting where my bum should be, sneering at me with their zippered lips! No room at all for the crowds of adoring fans and onlookers!

So a plan came to my head. We would revolt! Yes! We would become a club of revolting bowlers!

This is my dream.

At the beginning of each game, we would put our bags on the seats, and withdraw from their gaping maws, our precious tools of bowls, chalk, measures and cloths.

And THEN, dear friends – WE WILL SHOVE THOSE PESKY PORTMANTEAUX UNDER THE SEAT!

We will raise our voices to the sky in jubilation, chanting ”BUMS, NOT BAGS, ON SEATS”

At the end of the day, as the sun sets, and the battle is over, we can then drag those empty vessels from under the seats, and once again, endow them with the hallowed relics of the day’s struggle. They can then be left, scattered where they fall, until we fetch them, and trudge wearily home, knowing that, for this week at least, “Bums – not Bags” prevailed.

Keep the faith, folks. Each week a new battle begins. They will fight us, but we must be aware the battle of “Bums and Bags” will be an ongoing struggle!

This is my dream – may it become reality.

Cheers

Dianne
