ASSOCIATION FOR FERTILITY AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (AFRH)The Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health (AFRH) is a multidisciplinary body whose main aim is to promote interest in, and understanding of reproductive biology and medicine. The association was inaugurated as Nigerian Fertility Society (NFS), in 1992.

After several unsuccessful attempts to register the NFS with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria, the name Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health (AFRH) was finally accepted in 2010 and was duly registered.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Association is a non-partisan, non-governmental association, geared towards the enhancement of and quality education service in reproductive health education, with emphasis on fertility services.

The association seeks to create awareness among all persons within Nigeria, Africa and abroad, of the importance of reproductive health.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE BODY

1. To secure the services of professional and other staff and to assist in fulfilling the objectives of the society.

2. To provide educational material in areas of need to be used in fertility and reproductive

health education.

3. To act as a research institution and to carry out research on issues that relate to fertility

and reproductive health education within Nigeria, Africa and internationally.

4. To establish good working and co-operative relationships with government and non-

governmental organizations and agencies at National, Regional and International levels.

The existence of the AFRH has enabled the introduction of National ethical and regulatory guidelines, fostered collaboration between Centers, Nations and other Fertility Societies in the USA (ASRM) and Europe (ESHRE).

The AFRH is a registered member of the IFFS and currently has a seat on the Board of Directors.

It is a great honour and privilege to

welcome you all to the 9th AFRH

International Scientific Conference

holding for the 2nd time in The

Garden City – Port Harcourt. The

theme 'Challenges With Assisted

Reproductive Technology in sub-

Saharan Afr ica' was careful ly

chosen in consideration of the

realities facing practitioners in our

sub region. ART is one of the most

rapidly expanding fields of human medicine and is indispensible

in the management of infertility

Our faculty is made up of mostly Nigerian experts from within and

outside the country. They have all contributed immensely to the

actualization of this conference by sponsoring themselves and

contributing in cash and kind to our committee. Their patriotism

and commitment to the development of reproductive medicine

in Nigeria is evident from their selfless sacrifices and service to the

AFRH. The “Future of ART in Developing Countries' is dependent

on our input presently and we believe that the discussions in this

meeting will contribute to making that Future bright.

The main conference was preceded by workshops for nurses

and scientists (embryologists) who are integral members of

teams providing services in reproductive health. We owe a debt

of gratitude to JNCI, Platinum Sponsors and Strategic Partners of

AFRH who made both workshops a reality. I would also like to

acknowledge Merck who are also Platinum Sponsors and

Strategic Partners. Other sponsors are duly recognized and

acknowledged in the conference “Diary” which should be useful

to delegates for a long period after this meeting.

We are extremely grateful to all delegates, supporting clinics and

industry that have made this event a reality. We started out with a

very lean purse and shuddered at the enormity of the task of

hosting this conference in a depressed economy. We had no

option but to 'cut our coat according to the size of our cloth'

looking inwards and employ the 'Local Content' philosophy.

There is no doubt however that our facilitators are world-

renowned experts who will give you more that you expect. Words

are not enough to thank all members of the LOC who worked

tirelessly to make this event a success. I invite you to savour the

hospitality of New Rivers State of Possibilities. Welcome to Port

Harcourt.

On behalf of the Executive Council of AFRH I extend my warm greetings and a very warm welcome to our Special Guest of Honour, all our spec ia l gues t s , Government functionalists Speakers from far and wide, members of the AFRH, friends of AFRH, Exhibitors, gentle men and women of the media and, indeed, everyone here seated.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 2019 Conference, led

by Chairman, DrPreyeFiebai, has painstakingly put together a good Program which contains all the catches of a good Conference. What is more exciting is that they've introduced innovative methods to get to this point. Port Harcourt 2019 therefore promises to outshine what we saw here in 2016!

The AFRH as a body has witnessed good growth within a few years and is a well recognized umbrella body of the different specialties that are involved in infertility and assisted reproductive practices and education in Nigeria. Our unique selling point is that so much harmony and common purpose exists at the top. This spirit of oneness is priceless and should be guarded in the life of AFRH.

I took over the mantle of leadership as President in 2018. The EXCO has continued to remain committed and united. The members have also shown commitment and willingness to serve. Together we completed the work with Lagos State in launching the Book of practice guidelines and regulation of ART. Our highly respected AFRH members, Professors OsatoGiwaOsagie, OladapoAshiru and John Ikimalo, together with Lagos State Government Officials are in a Committee to inspect and accredit centers in Lagos. Their pioneering work will spread to the FCT and other States of Nigeria. The AFRH also stepped up appearances in the international arena. We participated actively in IFFS Board meetings in Denver USA, Shanghai, China, Vienna Austria and hope to be in Philadelphia next month for this. On the African scene,

ADDRESS BY DR IBRAHIM WADA – PRESIDENT AFRH

AFRH members are playing leading roles in the transformation of the African Fertility Society (AFS) to African Federation of Fertility Societies (AFFS). I invite you all to Cairo in November where a clean copy of the AFFS Constitution will be unveiled by me as Chairman of the Constitution & Bye Laws committee. I will also add that there's significant collaboration going on between the AFRH and FERSOG (Ghana) and GIERAF (francophone west Africa). We hope to engage with more societies as time goes on.

The future of AFRH looks quite bright and I know that greater things will be achieved provided each and every one protects the unity and sense of purpose that currently binds us so strong!

Bravo!

Richard Ajayi obtained an MBBS with distinction from Kings College at the University of London. He became a member of the Royal College o f O b s t e t r i c s a n d Gynaecology in 1993 and Fellow in 2006.He founded Bridge Clinic in Nigeria in 1996, in collaboration with Kings Col lege Univers ity. I t has become one of the most r e n o w n e d i n f e r t i l i t y management centre in West

Africa. In response to infrastructural challenges, he promoted and set up Path Care Laboratories, in partnership with a South African company, in 2004. Path Care Laboratories was fundamental in mobilising the private healthcare sector in Nigeria. As a healthcare entrepreneur, Richard realised that his medical training was not sufficient to deal with the complexity of healthcare in Nigeria and he proceeded to business school to develop management, organisational as well as investment capabilities. He is an alumnus of the CEO program of Lagos Business School, Owner President Management Program of the Harvard Business School. He has attended Mergers, Acquisition and Strategic Transactions ("MAST") organised by YPO and he on the third year of a five year Scaling your Business program organised by the London business school. He is a YPO Gold member of the Lagos Chapter.Richard's vision is to transform healthcare in Nigeria and has worked closely with private equity firms to invest in and develop the sector. In this regard, he recently promoted the merger of Path Care Laboratories with SYNLAB and thus facilitating the African expansion of the European leader in medical diagnostics.
