PRESIDENT’S REPORT

At the May meeting of the Committee PeterWatts, through Glen, tendered his resignationfrom the Committee. After so many years ofhis involvement in the St Martins Club andthe rebranded Port Hills Athletic Club,Peter’s leadership will be greatly missed.Peter has attended nearly every club run inhis time with the club, only missing when atan interclub race, competing at South Island,New Zealand or Oceania Championships orthe occasional marathon. He continues tocoach a number of Port Hills athletes. JamieHawker is doing a great job as Acting ClubCaptain in this role until the Annual GeneralMeeting. Lina Elliott has filled Peter’s/Jamie’s position on the Committee. Lina hasbeen with the club for many years and it waspleasing to welcome her onto the Committee. It is interesting to note that the Committee isnow comprised of 7 women and 6 men, anhistorical moment for the club.

During this winter recess time of the year fortrack and field, Kerry Rutherford is seekingfunding for the purchase of new high jumplanding pads.

Cross country and road running members arecontinuing to perform well, with a largenumber competing in the ChristchurchAirport Marathon events. Our youngermembers are achieving top placings in crosscountry races.

Please note that our club is duty club for theset up of the New Zealand Cross CountryChampionships on Friday, 31st July at theHalswell Quarry. The Championships are onSaturday, 1st August.

The Annual General Meeting is onWednesday, 12th August 2015. It would begreat to see you all there.

PORT HILLS CROSS COUNTRY &ROAD REPORT MAY/JUNE 2015

Hi Members,

Well, things are ticking along very well at this stageof the cross country season.

The Jane Patterson was well supported and saw manyclub runners enjoy the day out on course.

The club run put on by Ray and Peter King aroundHagley Park was very popular with club runnersenjoying the nice sunny autumn weather and a greatway to see parts of our city that we don’t usually seewith a hot drink, nibbles, and great conversations tofill in the afternoon. Many thanks Peter and Ray.

The Airport Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K andChildren’s races were held on June 1st with overtwenty-four club members taking part in the threelonger races. Port Hills members performed very well, with some PB’s attained. Check out results in the clubnewsletter (page 7).

The Holloway Memorial races were held at a newvenue closer to home over the old Ascot golf coursewhich made for some top running over a good crosscountry course. Once again there were many good per-formances. (See page 9)

Last weekend the Andrew Reece Memorial Races /Relays were held at Woodend Beach Domain.Numbers were a little down from past events butmaybe members are recovering from the BIG ChChmarathon weekend?

Following on from the Andrew Reece Relays is TheKennett Cup / South Island Cross Country Champs atQE ll.

And as most of you will have heard there is NO GretaValley Relay race on later this year.

Keep up the good running.

Christchurch Airport Half Marathon

Sunday 31st May

Great to be back in the central city again. What adifference a venue makes. Hundreds ofsupporters cheering the competitors all the wayaround the course and a completely differentatmosphere to the whole event. The first timeback in the city centre since the earthquakes andlong may it last. And of course I could walk toand from the start!

The Christchurch half marathon doubled as theNew Zealand half marathon championship andwas run through the centre of the city on a perfectday for running: cool, no wind and sunny. Lots ofClub members present but sadly far fewer Club

singlets in evidence. Why the reluctance to run inClub colours? Despite the eagle eye of Glentallying twenty one members in the Half it ispossible you have been missed if you were not inthe Club colours. In terms of results it was the women to the fore. The best time for any of our members was JoBuick who backed up her Canterburychampionship win with an excellent 1:24.57 and9th in the Senior Women. In the same grade IslaSmith was 15th with a great 1:30.12. Kate Newittwon the Senior Women in 2:02.31 and was insecond place overall in the race walk. Also in theWomen 70+ Julie Root was 1st in 2:18.57.

Christchurch Marathon31st May 2015

After a 12 week running programme, combinedwith 10 weeks of core strength exercises (approx.30 mins3-4 times weekly) I had prepared myself tochallenge my previous PB and entered theChristchurch Marathon which was back in ourcity. The morning weather was was to be a -3degrees start (Last year’s was -5) so as I travelledinto our city with my support crew my hands andtoes were getting colder but my mind was racingalready with all sorts of questions one gets beforea “big, trained for” race. Have I done enoughtraining? What if this happens or that happens? Iplayed over in my head many scenarios to helpprepare my head for this race.

My support crew was my wife, and my 2 sons(one coming back over from Aussie) with helpand cheers from many club members who werethere to support me and other club runners on thisday with a special person cheering me on fromhis home (Thanks Pete). What more greatmotivation did I need!!!!

There was a real buzz from everyone, runners, officials, families and many supporters at the startline now that our marathon was back in our city. The countdown came quickly after the firstwheelchair person headed off into the cold airand then we were off.

Now as my coach says don’t go out too fast likeso many less experienced runners do and to keepto a pace that was comfortable early on but keepme in touch to try to better my PB and look forthat magic sub 3 hr marathon.

I have been training with some great runners andwhen Chris offered to pace me for the first half as(he also was looking for a good ½ marathon time, and he did one) our pace was very similar.

I had done my homework on another veryimportant part of my preparations (nutrition) orso I had thought and had some Tailwind/waterelectrolytes at each of the 5k special drinks tables(which was my first time for a marathon but hadused Tailwind in many training sessions) afterhaving carried Gels and getting water at the aidstations previously.

The support from my family, Heather, and withChris running beside me and seeing many manyclub supporters calling out your name as you racepast them (you really do run faster when you hearyour name called out) I got to the end of the firstlap (half way) in a time of 1.30.16 which as I ranbehind the Cathedral for the second and last timeI for a moment really did believe I could get a PBand maybe more.

The field had thinned out greatly by now as lesspeople take the challenge to do a full one and Ihad to really concentrate on all those lessonslearnt from previous marathons and those manytraining runs with Pete telling me to paceyourself, hold your shoulders straight, drinkwater regularly and as my 2 son’s said at the startof the race, and repeated to me at the start linewhat I have said to them many many times whenfaced with challenges is to remember what NIKEsays – “JUST DO IT” so I kept my focus and asthe day was getting warmer I took on more waterat the 25k and 35k marks but my pace wasslowing but I wasn’t sure why but getting heapsof encouragement from club members and mysupport crew I worked very hard in those last 10kto keep my focus and pace going.

It wasn’t to be my best marathon day when Icrossed the finish line in 3.12.47 but looking backI would have been even slower time-wise but forthat wonderful support from many people overmy 42.2 km.

Reflecting back I will take on board some morehelpful lessons I’ve learnt, the great return to ourcity for our marathon and hold those specialmemories that Bonnie, Scott, Michael and myPort Hills running family gave to me on thatbloody cold start day that was my ChristchurchMarathon for 2015.

Now, where’s my next race going to be ?……..

Jamie Hawker – Club member

Christchurch Airport Half Marathon (contd.)

Fastest time for the men went to Ian Curd with1:25.18 for 13th in the Men 40-49 followed byChris Arnold at 1:29.36 Men50-59 and LenMillward in 1:34.43 taking 6th in the Men 60-69.

With too much congestion at the start and accessproblems for the hospital there are a couple ofthings for the organisers to sort out but it will bea great pity if the event does not remain in thecentre of town. Certainly for me, having the hugenumber of Club supporters cheering you on atjust about every corner (thank you for the supporteveryone), far more than makes up for the roughsurface in a couple of places. A great event thatmakes it worthwhile keeping up the training.

Holloway Memorial Races - Junior Results

The Holloway Memorial Races were held on anew course this year in the now retired AscotGolf course at the former QE2. Most of thecomments I heard were in relation to the groundbeing fairly soft underfoot but a nice course. Wehad some new first time runners in this eventincluding Chucka’s young boy Selwyn-Jack whomade mum and dad pretty proud carrying on theBayliss legacy. After he’d finished the race hekept running through the finish line and lookedset for another lap around the course!!.Paul
