    Ports play an important role in stimulating economic activity

    In India Ports handle 95% of international trade cargo by volume and 70% by value

    India has a long coastline of about 7517 Km

    Ranked 18 th in the world in terms of port tonnage

    Total volume handled at the ports was560.7MTPA for year ending 2010

    The Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Indias largest container port

    Classification of Ports

    Major Ports : 12 ports which function as Autonomous bodies under the Ministry of Shipping

    Minor Ports: There are 187 notified non-major ports across 13 maritime States.
