Reported changes in capacity during 2011-12

• Increased capacity to secure funds: 34% ‘Somewhat’; 22% ‘Considerably’

• Increased exposure or profile: 53% ‘Somewhat’; 25% ‘Considerably’

• Increased capacity to engage and influence: 52% ‘Somewhat’; 3% ‘Considerably’

Over 2,250 members managing 1,500 properties208 new members recruited in 2011-12, managing 135 properties

Other funding in 2011-12Australian Government Community Action Grants:10 groups received $185,060 for 11 projects

DSE’s Communities for Nature Grants:19 groups received $821,592 for 5 projects

Australian Government Caring for Our Country program:1 group received $226,930 for 1 project

2011-12 Victorian Landcare Grants$380,000 went to 61 groups for 30 projects and 33 support grants

65.8% of private rural land covered

54 of the groups have formed 10 Landcare Networks

75 Landcare Groups covering 673,370 hectares (52.6% of the region)

The 2011-12 Victorian Landcare Grants delivered:

• 151 events attracting 1945 people

• 18.5 Ha of revegetation

• 623.5 Ha of weed control

• 9 Ha of remnant vegetation fenced

Volunteers contributed an estimated value of $498,000 (time and resources)

During 2011-12, landcare was supported by:

• 1 Regional Landcare Coordinator funded through DSE’s Victorian Landcare Program

• 7 Community NRM Coordinators (5.4 FTE) funded through a combination of Melbourne Water, Australian Government’s Regional Landcare Facilitator Initiative, and DSE’s Vision for Werribee Plains Initiative

• 7 Local Landcare Facilitators (3.5 FTE) funded through DSE’s Local Landcare Facilitator Initiative

• 3 local Landcare Facilitators funded through other sources such as local government and bushfire recovery

During 2011-12, the PPWCMA delivered the following support activities:

Regional• 2 “Give me some credit” seminars to help local landholders adapt their land management practices to a changing

climate (100 people)

• 1 “revitalise your landcare Group” workshop to develop the capacity of groups to engage and influence landholders and to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Landcare (53 people)

Local • 5 Catchment Action Round Tables to improve coordination and collaboration for natural resource management (83

people)

• 26 local events addressing such topics as grant writing, property planning, plant identification, horse property management, land management, platypus, erosion, fire-affected waterways, care and management of natural resources, revegetation, grazing of native pastures, river health and land slips (800+ people)

This report reflects the activities undertaken by Landcare groups and networks only. Additional work undertaken by volunteers, individuals and other community groups is extensive and beyond the scope of this report. Data is based on surveys completed by 31 Landcare groups, and PPWCMA Community Grant Project final reports for 1 July 2011 – 30 June 2012.

The Port Phillip and Westernport CMA (PPWCMA) is one of ten regional Catchment Management Authorities in Victoria. The PPWCMA provides leadership to a range of stakeholder groups and works to deliver integrated catchment management and sustainability of the region’s catchment assets by building cooperation, coordination and partnerships amongst these groups.
