Gulf LNG Energy Terminal Update 4
December 2010
Port Facts... •The State of Mississippi reaps hugeeconomic benefits because it issurrounded by major navigable waterwaysand deepwater access to global markets. The Mississippi River is most of the state’swestern boundary, the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway flows though thenortheastern section of the state, and thesouthern border of Mississippi is the Gulf of Mexico.• The Port of Pascagoula is one of sixteenports in Mississippi – twelve river ports andfour ports along the Gulf of Mexico. Thedeepwater Port of Pascagoula is by far thelargest port in Mississippi transportingover 39 million tons of cargo in 2009.
An easy to overlook, yetvery important, roleplayed by the JacksonCounty Port Authority inport and economicdevelopment is our role asnon-federal sponsor of thePascagoula HarborNavigation Project. Partnering with several
federal agencies forconstruction, operation, andmaintenance of Pascagoula’s HarborProject is essential for providing thereliable, economical, environmentallyresponsible access on which our keyindustries depend. The Projectencompasses nearly 20 miles ofdeepwater channels and almost 7 milesof upriver, shallow-water channels, aswell as the associated turning basins, disposal areas, and other supportelements. In addition to ongoing maintenance
dredging activities, the Port Authorityand Corps of Engineers, along with ourother federal, state, and industrypartners, have several projectsunderway that will ensure thewaterway remains safe and viable for
years to come. ThePascagoula River DredgedMaterial Management Site, scheduled to beginconstruction in early 2011,will accommodate thedredged material from thePascagoula River Harbor inan economical and environ-mentally responsible wayfor the next 20 years.
Widening of the Entrance Channel from450 feet to 550 feet will allowincreasingly larger vessels to transitour waterways. It is scheduled tobegin construction in the fall of 2011.Last, but certainly not least, the study to determine the feasibility ofwidening the channel leading into ourBayou Casotte Harbor from 350 feetto 450 feet is underway. Scheduled to be completed in December 2012,preliminary benefit/cost ratios arepromising. We remain committed to ensuring
that the safe, reliable, economical, andenvironmentally responsible deepwateraccess our industry partners and publicterminals require remains available tobenefit Jackson County and Mississippi.
