    Why AdvisoryIt is not a

    new idea

No educational program can besuccessful without attending to thepersonal learning needs of individual

studentsAdvisement is one of the keycomponents of personalized education

and understanding it involves sorting out

the various definitions of guidance andcounseling.

    (Keefe, J.W 1983 .Advisement--a helping role. The

    Practitioner: NASSP).

    AdvisoryIts a solid idea!

Student advisory programs provide anopportunity for middle level schools tointroduce an adult advocate into the life

of every student in the school. Manyyoung adolescents suffer from feelings of

    isolation and loneliness, and advisory

activities allow them to connect withcaring adults and other students to help

them through the rough spots during themiddle level years

    leading middle level reform, 2006)

    What Research Indicates

When students make a lasting connection with atleast one caring adult, academic and personaloutcomes improve. A significant adult who

provides support and direction during difficulttimes is an important factor in helping students

avoid academic failure and a variety of other

    problems (Galassi, Gulledge, & Cox 1997, p.303).
