About the display• When you press u (N for the remote control) after changing the CD or turning off and on

the player, the total number of tracks in the CD and total playing time appear for about twoseconds.

• During play, the track number and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear.• Between tracks, the time to the beginning of the next track appears with the “-” indication.• During pause, the elapsed playing time flashes.

If the volume level does not increaseIs AVLS set to “LIMIT”? Set AVLS to “NORM.” For details, see “Protecting your hearing(AVLS).”

Playback starts from the point you stoppedYour CD player can recall the playback point where you stopped and then resume playing fromthe same place (resume function). There is no ON/OFF switch of the resume function on this CDplayer.

Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat play)

You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, single, shuffle and PGM play modes.

During playback, press REPEAT/ENTER.

Note on ./>During Repeat play, you can locate the first track after the last track by pressing > repeatedly.You can also locate the last track after first track by pressing . repeatedly.

Playing a single track (Single play)

During playback, press PLAY MODErepeatedly until “1” appears.

Playing tracks in your favorite order (PGM play)

You can program the CD player to play up to 64 tracks in your favorite order.

1 During playback, press PLAY MODErepeatedly until “PGM” appears.

2 Press . or > to select a track.

3 Press REPEAT/ENTER to enterthe selected track.“00” appears and the playing order increasesby one.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 to select the tracks in your favorite order.

5 Press u to start the PGM play.

To check the programDuring programming:

Press REPEAT/ENTER repeatedly before step 5.During the PGM play:

Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “PGM” flashes, then press REPEAT/ENTER.Each time you press REPEAT/ENTER, the track number appears.

Notes• When you finish entering the 64th track in step 3, the first selected track appears in the display.• If you select more than 64 tracks, the first selected tracks are erased.

Emphasizing the basssound (SOUND)

You can emphasize the bass-boosted sound.

Press SOUND to select “BASS ” or“BASS .”

“BASS ” enhances the bass soundmore than “BASS ”.

NoteIf the sound is distorted when using the SOUNDfunction, turn down the volume.

The selected sound mode is displayed.

G-PROTECTIONfunctionThe G-PROTECTION function has beendeveloped to provide excellent protectionagainst sound skipping while jogging. Thisfunction provides a higher level of shockprotection than the traditional one.While jogging, be sure to hold your CDplayer with the OPEN switch facing upward.

Set G-PROTECTION (under the lid) to“ON.”

To turn off the G-PROTECTIONfunctionSet G-PROTECTION to “OFF.”

NoteSound may skip if:

– the CD player receives stronger continuousshock than expected or

Protecting your hearing(AVLS)

The AVLS (Automatic Volume LimiterSystem) function keeps down the maximumvolume to protect your hearing.

Set AVLS (in the battery compartment)to “LIMIT.”

To turn off the AVLS functionSet AVLS to “NORM.”

Flashes when the volume is turned upand beyond a certain level.

Locking the controls(HOLD)

You can lock the controls on your CD playerto prevent accidental button presses.

Slide HOLD in the direction of thearrow.

You can use the HOLD function with boththe CD player and remote control. You canstill operate your CD player using the remotecontrol when HOLD on the remote control isset to off.

Turning off theoperation beep soundYou can turn off the beep sound that is heardfrom your headphones/earphones when youoperate your CD player.

1 Remove the power source (ACpower adaptor, rechargeablebatteries or dry batteries) from theCD player.

2 Connect the power source whilepressing x/CHG on the CD playeror x on the remote control.

To turn on the beep soundRemove the power source and then connectthe power source without pressing x/CHGor x.

Connecting a stereosystemYou can listen to CDs through a stereosystem and record CDs on a cassette tape.For details, see the instruction manual thatcomes with the connected device.

Be sure to turn off all connected devicesbefore making connections.

Notes• Before you play a CD, turn down the volume of

the connected device to avoid damaging theconnected speakers.

• Use the AC power adaptor for recording. If youuse the rechargeable batteries or dry batteries as apower source, batteries may become completelydepleted during recording.

• Adjust the volume properly on the connecteddevice so that the sound will not be distorted.

When using the connecting cord• You cannot adjust the volume of the

headphones/earphones on the CD player orthe remote control.

• If the sound is distorted, connect the deviceto the i/REMOTE jack.

• The SOUND function does not work.

Connecting your CD player

Using your CD player ina carYou can use your CD player in a car byconnecting it to the car cassette deck.

You cannot use the car mount plate for thisCD player.

When you use your CD player in a car,install it securely in a location that does notinterfere with your driving.

Optional car accessory neededTo connect your CD player to a car cassettedeck, you need the following car accessoriesin “Accessories (supplied/optional)”:• Car battery cord, and• Car connecting pack*For details, see the instruction manuals thatcome with the optional accessories.

* Noise may be heard if you use an optionalconnecting cord. It is recommended that you usea Sony car connecting pack to reduce noise.

Switched ignition function (whenusing the car battery cord)With this feature, your CD player stopsautomatically when you turn off the carengine (turn off the ignition key) even if thebatteries are inserted in the CD player. Thisfunction is invalid depending on the carmodels.

NoteUse only the car battery cord listed in “Accessories(supplied/optional).” If you use any other carbattery cord, a heat, smoke or malfunction mayoccur.

You can use the following power sources:• Rechargeable batteries• AC power adaptor (see “Playing a CD”)• LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries

Using the rechargeablebatteriesCharge the rechargeable batteries beforeusing them for the first time. You can useonly the following rechargeable batteries foryour CD player.• NC-WMAA• NH-WM2AA

1 Open the battery compartment lid.

2 Insert two rechargeable batteriesby matching the 3 to the diagramin the battery compartment andclose the lid.

3 Connect the AC power adaptor tothe DC IN 4.5 V jack of your CDplayer and an AC outlet, thenpress x/CHG to start charging.If the AC power adaptor does not fit theAC outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.

The CD player charges the batteries. The“CHG” indicator turns on in the display,and the indicator sections of lightup in succession. When the batteries arecompletely charged, the “CHG” and

indicators turn off.If you press x/CHG after the charge hasalready been completed, the indicator flashes and “Full” appears inthe display.

4 Disconnect the AC power adaptor.

To keep the original battery capacity for along time, charge the batteries only whenthey are completely depleted.

Notes• The indicator sections of roughly shows the

remaining battery power. One section does notalways indicate one-fourth of the battery power.

• Depending on operating conditions, the indicatorsections of may increase or decrease.

When to replace the rechargeablebatteriesIf the battery life becomes shorter by abouthalf, replace the batteries with newrechargeable batteries.

Note on the rechargeable batteriesIf the battery is new or has not been used fora long time, it may not be chargedcompletely until you charge and discharge itseveral times.

Note on carrying the rechargeablebatteriesUse the supplied battery carrying case toprevent unexpected heat. If the rechargeablebatteries and the metallic objects arecontacted, heat or fire may occur due to ashort circuit.

To attach the battery compartment lidIf the battery compartment lid is detached byan accidental drop, excessive force, etc.,attach it as illustrated below.

Using dry batteriesUse only the following dry battery type foryour CD player:• LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries

NoteBe sure to remove the AC power adaptor whenusing the dry batteries.

1 Open the battery compartment lid.

2 Insert two LR6 (size AA) batteriesby matching the 3 to the diagramin the battery compartment.

Polarity of the plug

• When disconnecting the AC power adaptorfrom the AC outlet, grasp the adaptoritself. Do not pull it by the cord.

• Do not touch the AC power adaptor withwet hands.

On rechargeable batteriesand dry batteries• Do not charge the dry batteries.• Do not throw the batteries into fire.• Do not carry the batteries with coins or

other metallic objects. It can generate heatif the positive and negative terminals of thebattery are accidentally contacted by ametallic object.

• Do not mix rechargeable batteries with drybatteries.

• Do not mix new batteries with old ones.• Do not use different types of batteries

together.• When the batteries are not to be used for a

long time, remove them.• If battery leakage occurs, wipe off any

deposit in the battery compartment, andinstall new batteries. In case the depositadheres to you, wash it off thoroughly.

PrecautionsOn safety• Should any solid objects or liquid fall into

the CD player, unplug it and have itchecked by qualified personnel beforeoperating it any further.

• Do not put any foreign objects in the DCIN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.

On the CD player• Keep the lens on the CD player clean and

do not touch it. If you do so, the lens maybe damaged and the CD player will notoperate properly.

• Do not put any heavy object on top of theCD player. The CD player and the CD maybe damaged.

• Do not leave the CD player in a locationnear heat sources, or in a place subject todirect sunlight, excessive dust or sand,moisture, rain, mechanical shock,unleveled surface, or in a car with itswindows closed.

• If the CD player causes interference to theradio or television reception, turn off theCD player or move it away from the radioor television.

On handling CDs• To keep the CD clean, handle it by its

edge. Do not touch the surface.• Do not stick paper or tape onto the CD.

• Do not expose the CD to direct sunlight orheat sources such as hot air ducts. Do notleave the CD in a car parked under directsunlight.

On headphones/earphonesRoad safetyDo not use headphones/earphones whiledriving, cycling, or operating any motorizedvehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and isillegal in some areas. It can also bepotentially dangerous to play your headsetsat high volume while walking, especially atpedestrian crossings. You should exerciseextreme caution or discontinue use inpotentially hazardous situations.

Preventing hearing damageAvoid using headphones/earphones at highvolume. Hearing experts advise againstcontinuous, loud and extended play. If youexperience a ringing in your ears, reducevolume or discontinue use.

Consideration for othersKeep the volume at a moderate level. Thiswill allow you to hear outside sounds and tobe considerate to the people around you.

MaintenanceTo clean the casingUse a soft cloth slightly moistened in wateror a mild detergent solution. Do not usealcohol, benzine or thinner.
