Line Blenders: How do they work?
• High Intensity mixing and dispersion in a continuous
flow stream
• High mixer speeds and high power levels to produce
mixing uniformity
• Approx 65-100 Hp/1000 gall
• Mixer type is a direct drive Classic(can be an ECL)
• Utilizes two radial flow impellers
• Typical Applications:
• Waste Water Treatment: Most common app
• Dosing Chemicals for pH adjustment
• Chemical Processing, Petroleum Refining

How to Size Line Blenders
• Sizing Procedure is Simple
• Model Selection determined by:
• A desired retention time:
• Pipe Size selected based on the flow stream
• Flow rate
• Process Data: SG and viscosity
• Allowable Pressure Drop
COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL June 2, 2020SPX COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL 44
Step 1: Determine the vessel size
• Select Vessel Size based on:
• Flowrate: gall/min
• Retention time: sec
• One second retention time is a
typical goal
• Refer to TRB Sect 11 for curves

Which Lightnin Portable Do I quote?
Portable Mixer Selection will depend on:
• The Market and Application• Laboratory applications: GP2, LB2
• Food industry applications: • Nettco I and Series • Tendency to purchase low cost capital equipment• Washdown duty preferred
• Sanitary or Biopharm: • Nettco S series for noncritical Biopharm• SSO, SSI, SR, SSV, ECL,• Stainless, highly polished, cleanable mixers, Certs
• Industrial applications:I series, EV, ECL, Classic

Which Impellers do I use with portables?
Prop(A100)• Most commonly used on direct drive mixers
• Also used for elevated viscosity applications
• Hard-to-wet powder capabilities
Hydrofoil(A310)• Most often used on gear driven mixers
• High flow and low shear
• Ideal for low viscosity blending & solids suspension
• Sizes up to 20” diameter
• Portable mixers have lower D/T compared to heavies mixers• Typical D/T < 0.2
• Number of impellers: Determined by liquid level( i.e. Z/T)• Z/T = 0.7 to 1.0: Use a single impeller
• Z/T = 1 to 2.0 : Use dual impellers
• Suggested guidelines for when to use dual impellers?
• Tall tanks with height > diameter• High viscosity applications
• Fluids with different SG and viscosities• Surface drawdown of floating solids
• Typical impeller off bottom: approx. 1 diameter is common
• Typical impeller spacing:• 2 impeller diameters apart for gear drive
• 3 - 4 impeller diameters apart for direct drive
Rules to Optimize mixing zone of influence
Z
T
• Will it fit on the top of the tank?
• Is there sufficient overhead clearance?
• Will the Impeller will fit through the tank opening
• Any Unusual Startup or process conditions?
• Portable Mechanical considerations:• Shaft length should not exceed 90 X its diameter
• Be conscious of critical speed block out ranges
• P and Q units do not require Nc blockout ranges
• Review your mixer selection with customer and make adjustments per their feedback

How to Identify Your Competition
• The Mixer Nameplate• Most mixers have 2 nameplates: one for motor and one for mixer
• Includes:❑ Mixer model number
❑ Name and logo of the competitor
❑ N, Hp, year of manufacture, etc
• Understand the Mixer Model Number logic• Often indicates Hp, gear or direct drive, etc
• Color of the Mixers in the Customers Plant• Is it Lightnin Green?
• Color mix defines customer brand loyalty and mixer preference
