The “Porte Aperte al Trasimeno” initiative was designed to increase awareness of the Trasimeno region, which encompases eight towns: Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve, Magione, Paciano, Panicale, Passignano sul Trasimeno, Piegaro and Tuoro sul Trasimeno. The blue of the lake is surrounded by charming hilltop villages and lakeside towns steeped in history, in art and culinary tradition, very real treasure troves of culture and tradition all of which give the Trasimeno area its distinct characteristics. The quality of the environment is constantly monitored by the Regional Environmental Protection Agency, which collects and analyses the air, water and soil to ensure conformity to both Italian and European quality standards. Life around Lake Trasimeno is slow-paced, everyone knows one another and you can see the locals chatting in groups on the piazzas just as they have done since time immemorial. A unique sense of tranquil harmony reigns here, one that the Etruscans regarded as something of an earthly version of heaven, a place where life is good, where hospitality and warmth come naturally.

Learn about the many treasures hidden within the alleyways of town, the churches, decorations and flowering balconies that, together with City Hall on Piazza della Reppublica, are what give the medieval town its innate harmonic beauty. The tour then leads out into the countryside for a nature walk to hunt for interesting wild plants with an expert who will also offer advice on how to use them in recipes to prepare healthy, wholesome dishes.

The “Porte Aperte al Trasimeno” event at Tuoro, the site of the Battle of Trasimeno between the Romans and the Carthaginians, begins at Campo del Sole, near the pier. The mini cruise will take visitors around the lake’s biggest island and then dock there for a brief tour. The visit to the ancient fishing village includes the lace museum. Irish Point lacemaking was introduced in the early 1900s by the Marchesa Elena Guglielmi. An increase in the demand for lace encouraged several of the local women to start up their own artisanal industry. The museum houses some fine examples of the magnificent work these ladies did.
