“The shortest connection between two dots.” This is the definition of the straight line and it’s among these concepts where this project finds its inspiration. The main goal of this practical work is to create fine handmade pieces, by combining hand stitching with different unconventional materials in fashion, and allowing straight simple lines to connect random dots creating a complex surface, where an apparently three-dimensional composition appears by overlapping lines, and shaping new unexpected geometrical figures.

With the supervision of Masayo Ave and inspired in a previous project supervised by Hella Jongerius.

The pieces made for this project could also decorate like jewelry and were made from different materials as porcelain and wood paper, stitched to garments using yarn. In one of the pieces the pattern is directly embroidered with copper wire to the fabric.

Each piece is unique in its shape, due to the fact that they are all stitched following a spontaneous process, based on some simple rules that pretend to create a contrast between the spontaneity in the front side and the regularity in the backside.

This weaving project was inspired by Le Corbusier’s building “L’unité d’habitation” built in Berlin in 1956 was the 3rd of 5 modern residential housing projects built throughout Europe. As in the building, a mixture of colors and multiple geometric shapes was the concept for several samples with different proportions, where a double warp (one beige and the other one colorful) creates a contrast as the one found between the colors and the concrete in the facade of the building.

Process/

Surrounded by numerous everyday objects, we tend to unconsciously collect them and adapt ourselves to them, commonly ignoring their origin, importance, characteristics and aesthetic.

The aim of this project is to create a collection of textiles for fashion application with the topic “unconscious (re)collection of everyday private objects”. For this purpose a specific part of two or three different objects are merged into a new hybrid, which looks familiar and irritates at the same time. These dysfunctional objects call our collective consciousness and memory, showing their function and aesthetic in an ironic way. Sometimes it will be difficult to recognize them, and sometimes, at first glance, they will appear to be normal.

The idea behind using these prints for fashion application is to alienate and change the context of these objects in a radical way, making them a beautiful piece to wear and admire. The prints are done for specific pieces using silk as the main material and screen-printing as the technique. The dyes used are black pigment and acid dye for the colored shapes.

With the supervision of Linda Florence.

Inspiration/

Inspired by weaving techniques of native people in Latin America, the idea of this project is to re-use old advertising posters. For this purpose two posters with the same or different size were manually cut in stripes and then weaved together in order to create the warp and the weft. The final result shows how the posters’ information overlaps with the patterns, creating a new layer where the aesthetic of two different languages is mixed in a hand-made surface, that can be used as wallpaper or room divider.

With the supervision of Zane Berzina.
