  • NEW YORK UNIVERSITY. ABU DHABI, UAENOVEMBER 2010 - JULY 2012New York Universitys Abu Dhabi satellite campus is a 500,000 square meter design-build project. The project started in 2008 and began construction in 2010. It includes research and instructional facilities, student and faculty residential buildings, campus dining halls as well as a student center, library, gymnasium, and performing arts center. A highline level of pedestrian pathways connects the campus buildings, which were designed from Middle Eastern precedents. Narrow street-ways between buildings both mimics the Universitys familiar, tall New York streets, as well as acts as device for shade from the hot desert sun. Challenging site conditions such as sun, along with regional code requirements and clientele requests all went into the design development of this immense project.

  • With Rafael Violy Architects, I worked as a team leader for the two, twelve-story faculty residential towers as well as other campus wide areas of design and coordination. Managing a team of two coordinating architects and one draftsman, I was responsible for structural and mechanical coordination as well as designing to fire safety and accessible standards, as well as international building codes. As team leader, I also managed the entire drawing set for both residential towers, as well as reviewed shop drawings and sub contractor proposals as well as on-site and mock-up inspections. I also prepared client and contractor meetings both the office and outside. This included putting together slide shows, presentation books, and setting up large-scale models and other displays. 005

    APARTMENTS

    Together the faculty residential towers made up 40,000 square meters of the project. The west tower rests upon the experimental research building, while the east tower sits above the performing arts center. Close work with the client went into finding the perfect mix of apartments to meet their faculty and staffing needs. In total, there are 259 apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms. Projected living rooms and balconies add to each apartments interior appeal as well as the buildings interesting facades.

  • 00 TORRENS HOOK. SHOKEN, NEW YORKNOVEMBER 2011 - JUNE 2012The personal home of 00 Torrens Hook in upstate New York consists of two levels. A double-height main living area, a garage, and utilities room make up the ground floor. The second floor includes a kitchen and dining area, study office, master bedroom and bathroom and a secondary guest sleeping area and bathroom. At its early stages of design development, I worked closely with the architect in the design of his personal mountainside vacation home developing general layouts, faade construction and materials. My Main focus was the design of the custom joinery and millwork, which stood as the houses primary infrastructure. Large eight-foot tall cabinetry housed all of the homes mechanical, electrical and plumbing while separating and catering to each areas unique requirements.

  • INFLATABLE HULK. BROOKLYN, NEW YORKJANUARY 2010 - MAY 2010

    In 2010, a vast number of stalled construction sites swelled the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York. With over 50 stalled sites, a negative social attitude built up within the community as well as a large amount of dead space in the city.

    A Stalled construction site is a unique stage for architectural interjection. It subsides in a realm of temporality. Temporal in its material makeup and in its state, or momentary condition, a stalled construction site dithers on the spectrum of enclosure and non-enclosure, existence and non-existence. It offers a crucial point for architecture to explore the thresholds of experiential discovery.

  • The inflatable contrast the construction sites hard, dead space with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The experiential quality offers a sense of disorientation and mystique that stimulates all senses and allows for an escape from the city push. Through its translucency and thinness, the inflatable blurs the distinction between interior and exterior and the space between with self-challenging boundaries, similar to the indefinites of the stalled construction site. It has the capability to create space through the division of air or to create space by dividing air with air. Its lining is exact and definite, but also miniscule and negligible. It allows for physical boundaries to be tested and social boundaries to be explored.

  • The invasion of the pneumatic installation on Brooklyn, New York offers a surprise of experiential phenomenon while exercising a critique on the social affects and impacts these stalled construction sites are having on the people of the city. It also continues to challenge the definition of public space.

  • Cheap to construct and quick to deploy, the inflatable offers to return a measurable quantity of space back to the public. In its It exploits an encounter both of familiar and foreign experiential quality. The scale of its existence is exhausting but appropriate to the quantity of stalled sites in the city and the first of their projected undesired quality in the public realm. Temporality or inflation and deflation, the pneumatic may stretch beyond Brooklyn to other areas of stress.

  • CULINARY VOID. CHICAGO, ILLINOISSEPTEMBER 2009 - JANUARY 2010Drawing inspiration from back-of-house procedure, the design of The Second Culinary Institute of Chicago strives to explore void space as a visual advantage for culinary exposure. Through manipulation of void, vantage points are made across all positions of process in the harvesting, preparation, catering, consumption and critique of food whilst supplying a population of students with the necessary facilities for culinary education. By over exposing all stages of the culinary experience, the students educational practice is uninterrupted yet intangible. The introduction of an oblique surface both excites the precedented void space and enhances visual connection between the processes of the culinary experience and education.
