border patrol on dutyBetween the cities of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo,

the Rio Grande constitutes the international boundary. On the map this political boundary

falls directly in the middle of the river.

adjacent surfaces create ambiguous zones along international boundary

altitude of pools helps to distinguish connected and disconnected surfaces

pool inset into river gives access to both sides [under recreational terms only] and blurs border

influx of river re-directs pool surfaces creating access to riverfront

border patrol on dutyAs opposed to the hard-lined boundary drawn down the middle of the river, in its occupation the river has no such division. Recreational users, of any citizenship, are permitted free access to the entire width, so long as they do not touch the land of the other side. In contrast, users of the river deemed as illegal crossers are given no access

whatsoever and are removed from the water upon notice.

Border Patrol on DutyThe proposal situates a public pool complex on the

banks of the river in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. It utilizes a recreational program to expand the possible

territory for free mixings of people from either side and provide a much-needed public amenity.

It expands the river access for residents of Nuevo Laredo, while aspiring

to provide a new “cover” for the illegal crosser.

hub of hedonismDensity, camouflage, and

sensory stimulations were used as vehicles to achieve anonymity within

the space. The phenomenology of the interior facilitates anonymous interaction between patrons, allowing them to feel comfortable in

acting ways they normally would not consider. The complex geometries give the illusion the physical

space is transformed by the energy within.

Hub of HedonismWhile the architecture encourages outlandish behavior, it is ultimately the people who transform the malleable surroundings. With such an open floor plan, everywhere becomes ‘the stage’ as patrons call attention to themselves

as performers.

elementary school To mimic the site, the form is derived from flowing circulation paths that serve as the focus of the building where the classrooms and other masses become additive. The pathways allow for flowing circulation throughout the building and invite the natural surroundings inward. While there are rigid paths that become physically accessible, there are less definable paths intertwined. Where the noise traveling from the gymnasium to the upper loft meets the solid corridor or the sunlight gleaming through the light wells in the library fall on the dewey dot decimal path the

stacks follow.

science laboratoryCaught in a paradigm between the natural and built environment of the river flowing downstream and the train moving uptown, the lab serves as a place for demonstration and experimentation. With a portion of the building that physically moves to survey the surroundings, it attempts to bridge the two worlds together. The shifting portal uses a framed view to become an “extension” of the site and further experience the

atmosphere intended.
