My initial reaction to the site was to question what was hidden below or behind. This launched an investigation concerning viewpoint and mystery.

My curiosity concerning viewpoint led me to produce this drawing which projects“view paths” from windows, public corridors, and streets. The projection results ina layering of paths. The blank zones suggest areas of limited visual exposure.

Upon entering the Travelers Center, the majority of travelers will enter from a long on ramp onto the salvaged bridge. Once parked at the top level, the uninformed traveler will receive a full view of the Providence skyline. Soon after, the traveler is brought down under through a lifted fold of a lattice roof. Now submerged and disoriented, the traveler will make way through a shaded and hung system of paths underneath the lattice structure. At the end of the paths, the traveler will enter into a sheltered but airy space where orientative resources may be found. Finally, departure will occur through a long path which will direct and connect the traveler to the existing city-bound board-walk.

Unconscious ConsciousTime and Occupancy:

Fig 1: Within a dwelling, the body moves into a combination of vertical and horizontal positions. This diagramdisplays the movements through a 16 hour period one may spend within adwelling.

Fig 2: After translating the diagram into a section of a dwelling, a split between the unconscious and the conscious states became aparent.

Fig 3: The section was then extruded forfurther experimentation.

Occupancy and Light:

The intention is to prepare its occupant for departure. To supposrt a smooth transiation from a slumberous to concious state, the occupancy of a space determines the width of its apertures. For example, a space capable of greater occupancy will have greater apertures for light. As you can see from the sections, occupancy decreases from the dwellings entrance to its final resting place, the bedroom.

Objective:

Intervene on the Place Lalla Ydouna, located at the centerof the Medina of Fez, to provide economic growth and stability.

Personal Objectives:-connect common people to the Place area -connect the worker to his/her craft or product-connect to the existing green networks north and south of the medina

elGenerally, the rooftops accomodate programs lateral to and below its surface. The rooftops’ program is primareily one of leisure, however varies as it hovers over four main programs within the Lalla Ydouna.

More specifi cally, the rooftop above the prototype studio, in Place Lala Ydouna, is treated as a point of interest along the greater rooftop network. The intention of the diagram on the right is to suggest a series of centers or prototyping developments along the network of connected roofs within the medina of Fez.

Traditionally, women of the medina occupy rooftops while the men claim the paths below. Given this, I began to think of each sexes relationship to water collection. We can say women look to the sky and men look to the ground.

I am interested in widening the separation in this observation by creating an independent feminine space up on the roof. Its walls will be heightened to block the views of the ground below, gather water, and fi lled with sweet perfume.

Green Network:The medina lacks softscape for its growing population. Proposing a system of green space on the ground level is perhaps too non-negotiable given the lack of available space. The rooftop, however, is able to accommodate a network of softscapes, which may ultimately connect the forest north of the medina.

Pants: Rose, Mint, Bay Laurel, and Rock Rose; all of which have an aroma.

Vertical Circulation

To descend or ascend, the inhabitant will always enter or exit through a puncture of the roof. In effect, the inhabitant is always above and below a roof; within a roof.

51

The roof serves as a stream as it collects and transports water to particular points for storage. Grading of the roof as well as streams carved into the roof surface aid in the movement of people and water.

Unforlding of the Path

Above is a study which examines the textures of materials found on the ground as well as facade’s along Westminster and North Main St., Providence RI. The data was captured and recorded through sound waves using a field microphone. Data from the field recorder was taken and later transformed into a 3D graphic which begins to communicate complete transparency or empty space.
