Vol. 27, No. 32 | Richmond Surburban Newspapers | December 8, 2010STOPS AT EVERY HOME IN TOWN
Retailers would have us believe that the Christmas season should start as early as Halloween, but for many Mechanicsville locals, Christmas hasn’t fully arrived until
it’s time for the annual Christmas parade. Begun by John Clodfelter in 1985, the parade has since been taken over by the Rotary and Ruritan clubs and has become a Mechanicsville tradition.
Beginning at 3 p.m. last Sunday, this year’s parade had an
impressive turnout, both in units participating in the parade and in spectators, with people coming out as early as 1:30 to stake claim to their spots along the parade route. Despite the chill, there was an air of cheerful preparation in the hour leading up to the event,
snippets of carols floating through the air as high school marching bands ran through last-minute rehearsals and the occasional elf zoomed past on roller blades. One little girl, bundled tight against the cold, shot out of her seat when the
Chill in the air can’t stop parade’s warm feelingBy Forrest Gladstone
For Th e Mechanicsville Local
In December 1985, John Clodfelter and his wife, Gloria, organized a Christmas cele-bration at the windmill bank. They enlisted local scout troops and students from Lee Davis High School to help with preparations and music and decorated with old-fashioned crafts like seed-dipped pine-cones. And at the center of the festivities, John Clodfelter sat as Santa Claus, inviting chil-dren up onto his knee and encouraging them to tell him their Christmas wishes.
“We just felt that there should be a time of year, at least one, when we could do something good,” Clodfelter said. “It had a great turnout, and pretty soon people began asking if we were going to do it again the next year.”
By the time Christmas rolled around again, interest in the event had grown to such an extent that Clodfelter restruc-tured it into a community parade. The Mechanicsville Christmas Parade had 32 units its first year and has grown
steadily since. Clodfelter orga-nized it for nearly 20 years and served as Santa Claus until 2009. It is for him, and always has been, a labor of love.
“It’s for the kids, really. That’s why I tell people, when I’m being Santa, I need as much time with the children as they need to give me. Because you never know what they are bringing with them.”
John and Gloria’s son, Kenneth Clodfelter, was one of the U.S. sailors killed in the 2000 terrorist bombing of the USS Cole, and Clodfelter commented that after his son’s death many people wondered if he would stop his work as parade organizer and Santa Claus. Clodfelter shook his head at the thought.
“I couldn’t think of a better reason to continue. Kenneth helped me make the first parade a success. I couldn’t stop doing it.”
Though the parade finally got too big for Clodfelter to organize on his own, he con-tinues to serve as Santa for the Mechanicsville commu-nity, this year playing the role for Cracker Barrel and a local Cub Scout troop as well as for the children of soldiers sta-tioned aboard the USS Cole. He noted that though anyone

Field Day of the past breaks attendance records
Dennis Gammon and Louise Holland cut lumber into two-inch sections so that Thomas Cozart can turn them into broom handles at last weekend’s Field Day of the Past. It was the 19th year for the Rockville event. Field Day organizer Melinda Gammon said attendance broke all previous records, exceeding the 34,000 who attended last year, although a fi nal count was not yet in at presstime.
The Goochland Sheriff’s Office is ask-ing for help in determining what led to the death of Billy Lee Maxwell III, 17, who was found in the middle of Broad Street Road just east of Maidens Road early Saturday morning.
Goochland Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chad Hatton declined Monday to call the incident a case of hit and run.
“It’s too early in the investigation,” said Hatton. “We are trying to find out exactly
what happened.”Hatton said it does appear a vehicle was
involved. Unresponsive but still breathing, Maxwell
was found “in the middle of Broad Street,” according to Hatton. He died around 3:30 a.m. at the scene. His body has been taken to the Richmond Medical Examiner’s office where toxicology tests will be performed.
Authorities said there was no one at the scene when the incident was reported or when authorities arrived.
Investigators want to hear from persons who may have seen anything in the area
of Broad Street Road between Oilville and Maidens Roads from 1:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday morning.
Hatton said the Sheriff’s Office is work-ing closely with Virginia State Police and reminded the public that any information is wanted.
“We are looking to talk to anyone,” he said. “They can always call Crime Stoppers anonymously,” said Hatton.
Anyone with information can contact the Goochland Sheriff’s Office at 804-556-5349 or Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
Goochland teen’s death still under investigation
Goochland County schools will benefit from a newly passed federal program to the tune of more than a quarter of a mil-lion dollars, said superintendent Linda Underwood at last week’s school board meeting.
“We expected to get maybe $60,000,” said Underwood. The money comes from the Education Jobs Fund Act, passed by Congress in August.
“Much to our surprise, we got $260,000,” Underwood told board members. Nationally the legislation provided $10 billion for education jobs.
Underwood said Goochland will use half the money this year and save half for next year.
Five jobs will be funded with this money, said Underwood: one middle school teacher, three classroom assistants (one for each elementary school) and a classroom assistant at Goochland High School.
Earlier in the meeting Underwood produced a sum-mary of positions reduced in the current budget.
All told 18 positions were reduced in the current budget: nine teaching or instructional support positions, three instruc-tional assistant jobs, one clerical
position at the high school and one at the middle school and three central office positions.
In addition, the new budget reduced hours for contract clean-ers and instituted four furlough days, said Underwood.
The board also discussed plans for an all-day retreat in the first half of October to begin discussion of a revision of the school board’s comprehensive plan. A date for the retreat, which will be held locally, has not yet been set.
One topic of contention was a request for approval for a Spring Break trip by the Goochland High School baseball team to Disney World. Although no school funds are being requested, board member Raymond Miller balked at approving the trip.
“I would prefer this request be included in the September 28 presentation,” said Miller, referring to the scheduled pre-sentation of by GHS and GMS will present the board with a proposed budget for the athletic department.
In other news, Underwood announced that two empty posi-tions in central office have now been filled.

WEB DESIGN
Daily Deals webpageThe concept behind this webpage was to use Twitter as a medium to give advertisers, grouped by business category, the ability to update their advertising message at any given time while tapping into the Richmond Suburban Newspaper’s website audience. The sales initiative failed to gain traction in our rural markets and was eventually shuttered in favor of a corporate instituted Daily Deals program.
