CLOSET
• The lobby acts as both, a public as well as a semi-public area as some part of the lobby acts as a passage between the main entrance of the house and the drawing room and some part of it includes the dining area where only few guests are entertained. • The guest room acts as a semi-public area as when guests are over, my parents also spend some time in the room along with the guests. • The master bedroom and my bedroom are semi-private as they are only accessed by my parents and me but we also access each others rooms at times. • My closet is a semi-private area as it is mostly accessed by me but is also accessed by my mother at times.

Least Used Area Moderately Used Area Most Used Area
SPACE USAGE
• The drawing room is one of the most used areas of the house as my parents spend a lot of time there watching TV or entertaining guests. • The lobby and dining area are used a lot as they act as the central area in the house connecting all other spaces. • My bedroom is also one of the most used areas as I tend to spend almost all my time in it. • The balcony is one of the least used areas as it is only used by my mother and me but not very frequently. • The guest bedroom and the washroom are only used when we have guests over so it is one of the least used areas.
FORM AND SPACE
• There is a very strong sense of symmetry and balance in the right side of the house. The two bedrooms and bathrooms perfectly balance it. • When we look at the house as a whole, it is not very balanced.
CIRCULATION
1. There is not enough space in the kitchen for two people to work comfortably.
2. When the door of the drawing room is open, it becomes very uncomfortable for the person sitting on the sofa right next to the door.
3. There is not enough space to stand in between the side table and the wardrobe. There is a need for more clearance to access the drawers of the wardrobe comfortably.
4. This area seems to be a little congested if a person is carrying a lot of stuff and moving through this area.
CIRCULATION - OPERATIONAL FURNITURE
1. When the drawers of the table are being used, there is no space to walk or even stand between the table and the sofa.
2. While accessing the drawer of the side tables, it becomes difficult to use the cabinets underneath it.
3. The drawer and the cabinets underneath the two seater cannot be accessed from the front.
4. While the fridge is being used, the entrance to the kitchen gets blocked.
5. The cabinet underneath the washbasin cannot be used when the door is open.
3.
MOVEMENT
MOTHER FATHER ME
1. 2. 3.
4.
1. This area is feels very compact. 2. Moving here is difficult because if someone is moving from the
kitchen to the kitchen towards the dining table and if someone is moving from the drawing room towards the store room, there is a clash in the movement.
3. This path seems to be congested when the chairs are pulled out. 4. Movement in this area is very uncomfortable.

ACCESS & PROXIMITY - MASTER BEDROOM
• The kitchen is very far from the master bedroom which makes it difficult for my mother to access at times. • The drawing room is also far from the master bedroom and sometimes is inconvenient to access while the dining area is being used by guests. • The balcony is also very far from the master bedroom and is only accessed by my mother. Since it can only be accessed through the drawing room, it is inconvenient to access at times. • The dining area is just outside the bedroom which is disturbing at times as there is a lot of noise that enters the room.
ACCESS & PROXIMITY - MY BEDROOM
• The kitchen is very far from my bedroom which is hard for me to access at night. • The drawing room is very far away from my bedroom and that could be one reason I don’t spend a lot of time there but its also good as I get privacy in my bedroom. • The balcony is also very far from my bedroom and that is one reason It is not accessed much by me. • The dining area is just outside the bedroom which is disturbing at times as there is a lot of noise that enters the room.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN - PROPORTION & DISPROPORTION
1. In the drawing room, the eight-seater sofa seems to be a little large as compared to the other furniture pieces.
2. In the three bedrooms, the wardrobes seem to look a little disproportionate somewhat because of the size and also because of the colour of the wood.
3. In the closet, the wardrobe occupies a huge amount of space and seems to be somewhat out of proportion.
4. The refrigerator in the kitchen appears to be very huge.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN - BALANCE
1. The drawing room seems to be balanced in terms of how the furniture is kept but when we look at each façade, the drawing room seems to be left heavy because of the window placement.
2. The three bedrooms are not very balanced as the wardrobes seem to be a strong point of emphasis which makes it look heavier.
3. The closet doesn’t seem to be very balanced. The wardrobe makes one side very heavy as compared to the other side which includes the two-seater.
4. The lobby seems to be well balanced as it has the dining table in the centre and one table on each side.
5. Even though in the plan the kitchen looks very well balanced but the size of the fridge makes it heavier on one side.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN - EMPHASIS
1. In the drawing room, the eight-seater sofa, the two centre tables and the two-seater sofa act as the point of emphasis. Not only because of the size but also because of the large window behind the two-seater sofa.
2. In the guest rooms, the corner acts as the point of emphasis because of the presence of a window.
3. The upholstery in all the bedrooms acts as a point of emphasis.
4. In the kitchen, the stove and the window act as a point of emphasis. It is because of light through the window and also because it is the first thing that is visible while entering the kitchen.
5. The dining table is an important part of emphasis throughout the house as it is centrally placed in the lobby. It is also the first thing that is visible while entering the house.
6. The table acts as a point of emphasis because of there are things kept on it all the time. Its also because there are paintings hanging on the wall.
The Monsoon Retreat By Abraham John Architects
The Villa showcases Five Bedrooms (optional Media Room) with attached Bathrooms and balconies. In addition there is a Staff Room, a Kitchen and a Powder Room. Also, it is surrounded by a private swimming pool and evergreen gardens.
N
This 8,363 square foot villa located in Khandala, Mumbai is formulated on seemingly antonymous concepts of privacy and openness. The orientation ensures a sense of enclosure. It is only upon entering that one suddenly experiences the expanse of a double-height volume.
The current structure of the villa has been derived by subtracting spaces out of a cuboid. Firstly, by Creating the courtyards on the sides then creating the upper floor terrace & swimming pool and finally creating sloping roofs in keeping with the climate conditions.
The overall ground floor plan seems to be asymmetrically balanced but in few elements like the kitchen and dining area a lot of symmetry can be seen. On the second floor, the two bedrooms facing north are symmetrically balanced.
On the ground floor, the staircase and the dining room act as a point of emphasis. On the second floor, the glass wall of the master bathroom and the bedroom ceiling with wooden rafters act as a point of emphasis.
Ground floor First floor Ground floor First floor
Dining room Kitchen
There is fluidity of spaces as the open floor plan makes the Living – Dining – Swimming Pool and Deck areas feel like an expansive lounge, offering abundant light and natural ventilation, while a continuous wall serves as a textured backdrop, lending it a rustic feel.
Private Semi-Private Semi-Public Public
There is a clear demarcation of spaces between the public and private. The indoor/outdoor boundaries disappear as every room opens up to a private outdoor space (terrace or garden). Also, the spaces created harmonize with their surroundings and encourage sustainability by using “green” materials that accentuate warmth & transparency.
Ground floor First floor Ground floor First floor
In both these cases the wardrobe and the door cannot be accessed at the same time.
The carefully chosen, limited palette of materials ensures consistency in design, minimizes maintenance and encourages sustainability.

Bubble Diagrams
Design Brief: •There is no proper segregation of public and private spaces. The lobby and dining act as the buffer zone so a more defined lobby and a buffer zone is required. •The dining area is not defined and when guests are over, it creates a problem so a formal and more defined dining area near the living room is required. •The living room is the only lounging area in the house and is generally used to entertain guests. Also, it is away from my bedroom which leads to less interaction between my parents and me. Keeping this in mind, different areas for the family and guests are needed. Also, there needs to be some point of interaction between my room and my parents room. •There is less storage space in the house so more storage areas are needed. •The lobby, dining and my room do not receive any natural light so some source of natural light in all spaces is needed.
Pros: Clear demarcation between the public and private spaces. The family lounge is close to the den as well as the master bedroom. All the areas that are used more are placed on the ground floor. The living room is a double height space giving it a feeling of grandeur. The staircase is close to the public areas which is convenient as the guest room is on the first floor and there will not be any disturbance in the privacy of the family members. The spaces are staggered which gives a different feel upon entering another space. There are two entrances to the house, one being the main entry and the other being the service/private entry. There is a lot of storage space in the house.
Cons: The dining area and the powder room are very small. The shape and structure of the kitchen are not very affective. The private entrance is very narrow.

Sun Path Analysis
All the areas in the house receive ample amount of natural light. This is not only because of the windows but also because of the two skylights on the roof and the walk-on skylights on the first floor.

Family Lounge and Puja Room
The family lounge is designed keeping in mind the contemporary style and that it should be very comfortable. The Puja room on the other hand is traditional with complimenting furniture.
Gym Terrace Garden and Bathroom
The terrace garden and the gym are designed keeping in mind the openness of the space. The gym seems to be an open space because of its glass wall. Due to the openness of the gym, it creates a fresh and energetic environment.
