The original barn structure was converted into a dormitory in the 1950’s and used as such until the summer of 2011. Due to the age of the building and poor construction of the rooms, the building was gutted and completely redesigned. The main program focused on a new performance hall for master classes and a waiting area for students and pre-concert events. The ground floor houses two new teacher studios and the second floor houses 4 teacher’s assistant studios and a standing room balcony overlooking the performance hall.

Alcatraz Island has been home to a fort, military prison, Federal prison, Native American Occupation, and is now a National Park Preserve and tourist destination. The gashes respond to the layers of suppression and injustice that have taken place on the island. Remnants of the gashing become bridges and paths for individuals to explore. Visitors take a short trip through the main prison structure, witnessing the destruction and debris of the past events, and leave empowered to instigate change elsewhere. Occupiers who chose to stay on the island longer and explore the many levels of the intervention become organizers of future protests and occupations against human rights injustices.

The brutalist, enclosed nature of Boston City Hall rejects the notion of a government for the people, of the people. The public movement from the subway station located below the plaza of City Hall drives upwards creating a direct connection to City Hall. This movement rises up to the former Mayer’s Office, cuts open the unused courtyard in the center of the building, and ends in the former courtroom. The public is now free to enter City Hall and has “Occupied” the building, opening up the government to the people once again.

Proposing a mixed-use tower to bring housing, small business offices, and a performance hall to the Mission Hill Neighborhood. The ground floor has a green roof park for the public, as well as a private park for the residents. The residential units house small families in two or three bedrooms, with a private balcony and vertical garden screen system. The “archway” between the two residential towers allow for maximum natural lighting and views out. The cross bracing floors allow sky parks on the green roofs for residents.

Located in a residential neighborhood, adjacent to a community music school, the addition connects to the primary hall of the old building, bringing students new rehearsal space, an exhibition hall, and a performance hall. The space supports the program needed for the music school as well as provides for the fine arts, theatre, and dance. The community is drawn in by the front amphitheater stairs and the open interior space used for public events. The building skin facing residential buildings is made of tightly woven panels allowing light to the interior, but few views out, retaining the neighborhoods privacy. The scale of the building connects to the intimate feel of the area, while the performance space is raised up, referencing the importance of the space within the greater urban context of Berlin.
