During the foundation year at the Edin-burgh College of Art I undertook numerous projects investigating such themes as the city and its architecture. Working with differ-ent tutors in various workshops (amongst which construction, painting, printmaking) helped me to learn new art techniques and to develop an explorative and experiman-tal approach.

During the painting classes I mainly fo-cused on observational painting of spaces, their volumes and the atmospheres.

sculpture

Out of all fine art courses I especialy enjoyed doing sculpture.

I made a series of conceptural plaster and wood sculptures in which I tried to explore the subject of the city and space. Since I was a newcomer to Edinburgh I was especially sensitive to all its particu-larities. I deeply admired its historic architecture, but was equally disappointed by the twentieth century buildings which did not cor-respond to the context and seemed to be generic copies. I cre-ated three, almost identical volumes representing cities of a strong historic and architectural identity: Prague, Edinburgh and Gdańsk, asking myself what it would be like if only the 20-tieth century archi-tecture remained.

installation

The installation was a little space created under black bin-bags which completely pre-vented the light from entering. The interior enviroment was totally dark. There were loudspeakers with sounds of “mechanic work” playing. The whole enviro-ment was very hot and steamy as steam en-tered through a pipe from a kettle.

The only light was comming through a little opening, which was conected to my laptop-screan. From the inside this looked as if one was observing an outsite enviroment and was being obsereved at the same time by random pasers by.

The idea was to convey a feeling of exclu-sion and loneliness one faces and to pose questions on how our identity is shaped by how others see us.

Page 14: portfolio

performances

What I really enjoy about performances is the idea of playing with public spaces and modifying them by “out of place” behaviour, by wearing clothes that go beyond the conventional and gener-ally accepted way of clothing, transforming public into private etc

The photographs represent a series of performances which idea was one of taming the public space. Tranforming part of a train coach into a domestic space, making a pickinic on a busy shop-ping street, camping and preparing meals on a squere.

Page 17: portfolio

urban patch-workWith this project the task was to bring order and hierarchy into a square. Over time, the asphalt surface of the squere required some repairs turning the once ho-mogenous surface into an accidental patch-work of different shades and shapes. This in-spired me to bring the theme of a patchwork into my design. The coloured patches would mark various zones of the square, different hues and saturation would give them hierar-chy. At the same time the zones would be united in an overriding colour scheme. The paving would be made of coloured concrete slabs. In some places the slabs would be re-placed with trees that provide shading or with concrete blocks serving as benches.

first design stage: urban analysis

duration: 4 weeks

type: groupwork (groups of 2)

brief: Map and analyse different aspects of the district of Molino Nuovo (Lugano) in order to provide a basis for an upcom-ming design project aiming to give indentity to the place.Hypothesise on how the identity could be regained using analyzed elements.

My group’s focus was natural elements and sound.

realization:

Study of types of greenery, mapping of public/ private green zones, types of gardens and how they are related to differ-ent architecture and life- styles (contrast between old hous-es with vegetable gardens and housing estates with neatly moaned loans). Mapping points from which mountains are visible, zones with prevailing greenery, study of the river banks, silent and noisy zones.

Hypothesis included:

Reinforcement of the identity of the junctions with 360 de-grees views on the mountains, connecting three main parts of the district by bringing tipical types of greenery of the two bordering zones into the middle part of the district. Improv-ing the quality of the silent zones and creating a strong link between them; reinforcing presence of the river (hence cre-ating a landmark) by bringing its banks back to the natural state and creating a strong connection between the river and streets perpendicular to it; covering all the housing blocks with greenery so that only the old villas would stand out.

brief: Develop your own intervention on a chosen site.

realization:

My research focused on traces of the gone rural identity of the district. Together with an economic boom in the 60-ties a strong urbanization of the area occured. A chaotic urban sprawl resulted in a very defragmented urban tissue, with no planned structure or a prevailing architectural style. A big number of free-standing villas were replaced with high-rise appartment blocks resulting in a porous urban tissue. This resembled a collage- like maze composed of disjoined el-ements, rural buildings in vicinity of the modern highrisers. This chaos and lack of an overiding planning was a source of inspiration for me. I decided that my design should be in-cluded in this fragile identity and take from it. This varied and rich enviroment was full of traces of the passing rural identity which I decided to reasearch. Apart from old houses I have discovered old improvised structures such like gar-den sheds and pergolas. The main characteritcs of them was their “temporarity”, small size and translucency. I was drawn to their visual and sensual richness. Built by people and not by architects, they went well with the landscape, their cheap materials such as polycarbonate, plastic mesh, metal sheets gave them an interesting feel.

I decided to bring those characteristics (with a special focus on translucency) into my own design and to create a series of structures for community activities placed in already exhist-ing public spaces, adjusted to their confines, focusing on the idea of layering views.

The concept behind my project was to reinforce the presence of the public spaces in the disctrict of Mo-lino Nuovo and to bring life to it.

I have decided to design small structures placed in proximity of the confines of the site I worked on, which could be used as workshops, bars etc.

These structures are inspired by rustic, improvised “architecture”, such as little sheds, pergolas, green-houses etc, that can be found in the district. This ar-chitecture makes part of the rural history of the place. My design incorporates particular qualities of those “improvisted” structures such as translucency, small dimensions and an impression of temporality.

04 exhibition design

duration: 10 weeks

type: individual project

The project was made in collaboration with the Museum of Culture in Lugano. The task was to design an exhibition of religious objects of an Indonesian etnic group.

It was important for me to fully grasp the significance of the objects as well as the potential of the exhibition space. I concieved the exhibition as an explorative journey through various enviromens, engaging visitors’ emotions and only sug-gesting the meaning of the objects with little written information. Its aim was to intrigue attention of the visitor and gradualy give them a clearer understanding of the culture in question.

In the first design stage I worked a lot with imagery. I produced many drawings and paintings to visualize my ideas as well as to explore potential atmospheres, space sequences, light and colours. Later I made a 1:50 model and I tried to verify my imagination with the reality. I tried out different materials, colours and manipulated the lighting.

In the final stage I had to design display cabinets as well as construct a 1:1 scale prototype of them. I also had to decide on specific lighting fixtures and materials. I designed pole- like structures (which related to the wooden pieces used in reality) which appeared to be placed at random in the central area of the exhibition space. This seemingly chaotic arrangement was supposed to conjour up feelings an ocidental observer may have when encountering this fest. The poles were divided into two categories: onces that served as display cabinets with glass protection on top and onces for viewing images. Small pictures of the ceremony were placed on the top of each pole and were visible through a hole on the side. The image was reflected thanks to a mirror placed on a 45 degrees angle. This simple solution allowed for viewing images as if “peeping” through a hole, emphasising a feeling of looking at something that is unaccesible for an occidental viewer that can only be understood by a careful obsevation.

My idea was to explain the meaning and the use of objects in an indirect way using little description.

The concept was to create a journey through various enviro-mens engaging visitors’ emotions and suggesting the mean-

ing of the objects.

Exhibition sequence:

1.once entered a visitor sees a central space being closed of by coloured translucent panels. Can hear the sounds com-ming from this space as well as can see siluets of people moving inside. The journey proceeds so that one is always in contact with this central yet unaccesible space. The first part of the exhibition functions as kind of a mental preparation for accessing this space.2.Visitor enters 3 different spaces. Each of the spaces focus-es on different aspects of the objects in question: Their matu-facture in the domestic enviroment, their esthetic values and the third one the tradition behind their manufacture. Each of the sections gives an indirect information that the visi-tor has to work out himself. 3. Afterward the main area is entered in which the section expaining the main ceremony is placed. This area is entered through a narrow “corridor” to create a sensation of accessing something difficult to compreherd, of a special value. 4.The last two exposition spaces break away with the previ-ous convention as whats exposed there has no longer a re-ligous meanting but speaks of secular. The very last room is both a suvenir shop and a conclusion of the exhibition. Once entered one is immersed in a supermarket- like space, with objects for sale placed on supermarket shelves with big price-tags and an amplified “ beep” sound of a products going a check-out. This space is a comment on occidental consump-tionism, that has just as much importance for us as the reli-gion for the Borneo people

The task was to convert a former watch fac-tory into accomodation for young people in-terested in communal living.

I decided to create habitable units of minimal dimensions, for one or two students each, which appear like little houses inside the builing. Between them piazza- and street-like spaces are formed favouring a com-munal living. This solution avoides having anonymous corridors and lifeless spaces.

My project brakes with the rigidity of the ex-isting structure and at the same time main-tains a sensation of the former open space. I achieved it by inserting volumes of irregu-lar forms which cut through the facades and floor of the builing and create an interesting and dinamic interior spaciality.

To emphasise the difference between the existing structure and my intervention I decided to clearly distinguish between their materials. My intention was to create an impression that the existing spaces were kept almost in their original state whilst the new volumes appear as something added later, of a new identity. The old stucture is kept simple with greyish rasin flooring and white walls favouring views on the surrounding land-scape. Whereas the rooms are made of wood to give an additional feeling of temporality and cosiness.

During my studies I have gained a good knowledge of rendering engines such as v-rey or key-shot. Although I personally prefer models and hand drawings I believe that it is also possible to create poetic im-ages with the computer.

In my renderings I like using simple, staight angles which allow for a good overview of the space and which do not distort it.

The building combines two functions: a restaurant and a space for living. Placed on a lake side it offers incredible views. The interior lay-out as well as terraces correspond with the open-ing vistas. The playful arrangment of shifted horizontal planes and transpacency of the walls opticaly takes away some of its volume and makes it sit well in the surroundings.

This office buidling was designed for Stahlton-a producer of engineered concrete and is placed in proximity of the company’s factory. It provides an opportunity to create a concise local architectural character, which not only makes a connection with the immediate context, but also with long-range landscape and settlements.

Placed in anonymous potpourri of a quiet industrial area, it stands out becoming a landmark of the village of Frick.

The required high flexibility and the future scope for development is reflected in the choice of a logical open system. The spatial organization is also a response to the chaotic local situation and particularly aims to pro-vide a pleasant open working places of great potential for identification.

By a simple principle of stacking of arms, an exciting spatial structure is being established.

The offcies are placed around a central area, which promotes internal communication across the floors. The flexible basic principle allows for a creation of smaller as well as open-plan offices.

urban design

The given task was to design a self- sus-tainable ecological neighbourhood in the outskirts of the city of Gdansk.

The site is situated at the north- east edge of the city of Gdańsk. It is well connected with the city.In its surroundings many natural elements can be found such as small lakes and for-ests.

The existent site is inclined towards the south and is characterized by a rich bio-di-versity. Various types of plants and trees can be found within it as well as a small waterway with a pond.

Project

The project seeks to oppose the poor-ly planned small housing existent in the sur-rounding area (chaotic urban sprawl) creating a sustainable neighborhood containing shops, relaxation areas and many green spaces.

Separate car and pedestrian routes were designed with continues tree coverage. The latter ones are privileged over the car routes linking the central square and natural areas and a park with the pub-lic communication. Positioned between the housing provide a calm, pleasurable and safe way of travel-ing, encouraging inhabitants to reduce use of cars.

A greeway is designed along the existing water-way providing inhabitants with a very natural and calm walkway. There is a big number of green shared courtyards which open up towards the public area, creating intimate semi-public spaces.

There are several pedestrian as well as cy-cling routes establishing a connection with the natural reserve, forests, lakes and the city.

individual project (self-invented brief to build up my portfolio)duration: 3 months (01.2013-03.2013)consulted with different tutors at Technical Univeristy of Gdansk all the images and work included made by Alicja Nowicz

The site of my project is located in a Polish harbourcity- Gdynia built during the interwar period. Althoughbuit in a modernist style its urban fabric is createdaround the idea of a street. However, the city plan was never fully completedbecause of the outbreak of the Second WorldWar and the communism which followed. In result many urban voids exist in the city and its northen part is characterised by a gradual dispertion with a number of loosely positioned buildings.

This is where the site of my intervention is situated.

Although placed on the edge of the city centre it is a poor area which remained “forgotten” for a long time.

Despite this fact, this area possesed a strong identitybecause of the remaining old buildings(cottages, detached houses) which created an un-usual atmosphere (“an urban village”).

At the moment the city is demolishing them andreplacing with new builings imitating the ones built in the the interwar period . The history of theplace is being lost.

I propose to create a cultural centre (with manycommunity functions) in order to animatethe district . My intervention takes place on a plot surrounded by various structures. An old oridinary build-ing typical to the district stands in its middle. I propose an intervention which preserves it and adjust itself to it.

cultural centre

The site is situated in a northen part of the city where a gradual dispersion of the street- based urban fabric can be ob-served

It is where two different structures meet: remaining pre-war settlements, interwar period buildings and recent architecture. A variety of different archi-tecture can be noticed: detached houses, small tenements, pre-war mod-ernist buildings, communist block, contemporary buildings imitaiting the modernist style.

confines (various plots) movement through the site: there exists a number of routes, many build-ings are accesed from “the back”. Type of an “informal inner enviroment” is created. Because of the buildings placed in the middle,a semi-public space in the middle was formed.

Page 57: portfolio

The defragmentated urban fabric of of the dis-trict is very chaotic and lacks any public spaces. Therefore, I wished to create an intervention which influences positively the context and pro-vides not only interior but also outdoor public spaces. The volume of the building not only faces the street but also follows the continues of the plot and creates a courtyard in the middle: an inti-mate public space.

Its minimal language does not refer to the ex-isting architecture, it is rather its form and ma-terials which create a connection to the context.

The structure is based on an idea of flexible circulation. There is a permeable to movement reception area giving acces both to the gallery spaces and to the courtyard around which many public and semi- public functions are located ( a restaurant, workshops, performance spaces) The courtyard can be entered both directly from the street or through the main building creating a circular movement. The old structure resulting from its central position gains a special meaning.

In the core of the building (facing the street) an art gallery is located. It is characterised by a simple inte-rior lay-out. The vertical distribution is located in its central part, the void creates a visual connection between the floors and exhibitions spaces.

Despite its simplicity it offers a variety of exhibition spaces, each of different volume or lighting conditions .

The building offers many perspectives and workes with an idea of intriguing and drawing people in by offering visu-al connection between the street, the inside of the gallery, courtyard and the restaurant places at the rear (through the windows placed in line with each other and gallery entraces).

The building strictly follows the existing confinesand buildings
