Design Philosophy Designing is a process that incorporates many different aspects to ultimately achieve a product that isn’t only aesthetically pleasing, but functions in an appropriate manner. It is my belief that each design should be treated as a piece of art, this is to say that it is delicate, yet intriguing creating an emotion that creates a memory that is associated with a design, just as a piece of art can evoke emotion on its viewers. A design becomes more than just a building, but an emotion that will forever be associated with a users memory. This is where a design becomes delicate in creating an emotion that is appropriate to the overall goal of the project itself. This emotion is created by the form, structure, finishes, smells, sounds, and colors all working together to create a moment that identifies a design as it’s own piece of art. It is each one of these elements chosen to work together creating a piece of art, yet unlike a painting, drawing, or sculpture architecture will always have another aspect, its functionality.

This functionality shouldn’t be viewed as a hindrance on a design, but rather seen as a dynamic aspect in creating an emotion. A building isn’t meant to be viewed hanging on a wall or standing in a garden, but rather experienced to the point that the users become apart of the artistic element of the design. This where a designer can create an experience that allows for each user to work within all the other aspects of a design to complete the emotion that is attempting to be evoked. This is where a architecture becomes a completely different form of art and this is the difference between a good design and a great design.

Location: Brazilian RainforestMy thesis aimed to create a design that allowed for the built environment to work harmoniously with the natural world. This was accomplished through emulating the structure of the natural environment in which the integration would take place. In this case created a layering affect that was the ideal model to introduce a built element.

Location: Tablerock Lake, Mo.The winery design was based of off a character profile of Jack Kerouac who was also our client. After determining his ideas of knowledge, morals, and beauty I created conceptual work that would inform the final design. The concept was creating order out of chaos which becomes a blending of opposites to form a clear perception.

Adamopoulos ResidenceArch 419 Fall 2010

Location: Volos, GreeceThis project involved the revamping of a historical residence to be used as a part of the Mediterranean games. The residence itself was to be used as a sports Hall of Fame displaying the accomplishments of different cities in Greece. Along with the remodel an addition of a cafe was integrated to celebrate the present games.

Location: Springfield, MO.This dormitory was designed for a summer weaving camp. Through studying the art of weaving I created these over lapping repetitive forms that sit on a 60% incline. The hierarchy created by the forms allows for dorms to work with the steep site and functionality of the dorms separating them into 3 independent rooms.

GREAT FOR USE ON: Wood, metal, wicker, plastic, pottery, concrete and more. Use for window trim, molding, furniture, lamps, doors and planters.

COVERAGE: Approximately 70 square feet per quart. Coverage varies based on color, surface porosity, and method of application.

SURFACE PREPARATION: Clean surface well removing all dirt, grease, oil, and dust with a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Remove visible rust with a wire brush, sandpaper, or scraper. Sand surface with 220 grit sandpaper. For best adhesion, lightly sand new or bare wood or previously painted surfaces. Remove dust with a tack cloth. Use primer on chipped surfaces, new wood, meal, or rusted surfaces to improve hide, adhesion and durability.

APPLICATION DIRECTIONS: Use only in well-ventilated areas. Use drop cloths or newspapers to protect surrounding areas from potential spills and drips. Drips can be cleaned with soap and water within 20 minutes. Use at temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees fahrenheit. DO NOT apply in direct sunlight. For best results do not use in humid conditions, as high humidity will increase dry time and decrease gloss. Use can opener or screwdriver to pry lid from paint can. Stir paint thoroughly using a flat paddle. Move paddle in a lifting motion from the bottom of the can. For best results use a high quality nylon or polyester bristle brush. Test paint for compatibility in an inconspicuous area. Apply 2 thin coats for best performance and coverage. DO NOT apply paint in heavy coats. Thinning is not recommended. Dries to the touch in 30-60 minutes. Can be handled after 2 hours. Recoat after 6 hours.

CLEAN-UP: Splatters and spills can be cleaned with warm water and mild detergent within 20 minutes. If paint has dried, use paint thinner to remove. Brushes may be cleaned with mild detergent and warm water within 20 minutes of use. Use soap and water to clean hands.

FlammabilityIf the paint is flammable this will be stated on the label, usually in conjunction with a red flammability diamond. Store products with these markings away from sources of ignition such as barbeques, stoves, heaters, lighted cigarettes etc. Do not use these products where there is a danger of fire. Remember the pilot lights on gas heaters can ignite vapours

Health HazardsState Government Poisons Regulations require that a number of chemicals be identified as poisons. Modern paints contain very few toxic chemicals and household paints are especially free of such chemicals. However, if you see the word POISON or WARNING on the label in red letters, read further and you will find a statement giving safety directions, for example:

“Avoid contact with skin and eyes” or

“Wear protective gloves when mixing or using”.

You will also find a first aid statement, for example

“If swallowed do not induce vomiting”.

The information given on this portion of the label will be sufficient for you to handle the product with complete safety.

Material Safety Data SheetsHowever you are well advised, if using a product labelled ‘POISON’ or ‘WARNING’, to ask for the manufacturer’s material safety data sheet. This will give you much more information about the product, in particular what protective clothing or equipment you should use.

Instructions for UseAll paint can labels will contain general instructions for use. Don’t assume you know all there is to know about stirring, mixing, pouring, applying, and cleaning up. You might just find that following the instructions more closely is the difference between an adequate paint job and a great one. If you don’t have the recommended paint brush or roller rather put the job off until you can nip down to the local hardware store and get the correct one. Good paint deserves the right treatment.
