GHOST LAKE PASSIVE HOUSEGhost Lake is located in the Alaskan wilderness and features expan-sive views, high winds, and an extreme climate. When Seattle firm Olson Kundig was approached to design a series of Passive Houses on a large plot looking down onto Ghost Lake, they decided to bring the idea to my third year studio first. Working in a team of two we researched and learned about Passive House standards and materials designed to keep out the cold while retaining visual appeal.

GHOST LAKE PASSIVE HOUSEAn important aspect for the client was the site. A serene contrast of meadow and forest was to be preserved at all cost. The top layer of grasses is very thin in this area and takes years to grow back from even the smallest inscision. The solution was to design two modules for the roof system and supporting wall system that could easily fit into as few cargo containers as possible and not require a crane to set up. These components had to be strong enough to resist the weather and last for years as well as to insulate and eliminate any thermal bridges.

A PALOUSE MONUMENTDuring my third year I was provided with a site with an existing grain silo and a view of Kamiak Butte. I was given the stipulations of us-ing masonry and being ADA accessible to create a monument to the Palouse. Using tall walls of varying heights that plunge deep into the ground this project at its lowest displays the layers of soil that have built up over thousands of years and at its highest raises the viewer to a series of lookout points that frame special aspects of the Palouse like the rolling hills, the modern farming techniques, and the previously volcanic mountains that dot the landscape.

HAY BARN SERVICE PROJECTMy studio professor during my third year was approached by a lo-cal horse rescue to aid in the design and construction of a series of hay barns that were destroyed in a recent storm. With a small budget of $4,000 the class set out to find discounted and reclaimed materi-als. The metal siding came from leftover and modified lighting covers. After the design was finished I was in charge of a team of five people prefabricating the trusses due to my background in manufacturing. The trusses came together quickly and we transported them to the site. Working during studio time and on the weekends the project was finished two months later and came in under budget.

STEAM PLANT RENOVATIONA conceptual project during my second year of study with an existing building on the site, I was tasked with creating spaces that could serve community functions as well as offices. Penetrating the surface of the original brick facade with steel and glass while utilizing the window openings of the orignal building helped me meld the two into a cohe-sive design that looks to the future as well as the past. The site rests on the border between the campus and the city is an important transi-tion space and my design opens itself up to the surrounding commu-nity as it follows the slope of the hill up to the university.

SPOKANE APARTMENTSDuring my fourth year we began to look into urban revitalization and performed numerous typological studies of successful and failed downtown areas. We began working in groups of three on the individu-al units. Once we had a general idea we began to aggregate them into one building. We focused on the exchange of ideas among residents and created a number of shared gallery spaces and work rooms within the layout. I conceived of and built a section model with 10 layers of plexiglas etched with sections of our building taken every 10 feet. The end result was a multidimensional effect with sections that could be taken out individually and viewed.

FURNITURE DESIGNI love to work with my hands. I have been designing and building furni-ture for a few years mainly for myself and family. I focus on repurpos-ing reclaimed materials and am always searching for new sources of old materials. The concept behind most of my designs is to enhance the basic rituals of everyday life in the most passive way. I accomplish this by giving piece of mind through material responsibility and ensur-ing that the base needs of rituals like enjoying a morning’s coffee, wak-ing up, and preparing a meal.

GRAPHIC DESIGNI had been interested and studying graphic design long before I en-tered the architecture program. Album art originally piqued my inter-est which grew as I designed the website for the music store where I worked. Through my work in the signage industry I gained a working knowledge of graphics in a physical form. Through years of daily use I have mastered programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Flash, and Apple’s xCode for iOS programming.

PHOTOGRAPHYI have been a semi-professional photographer since 2006 and have since shot close to 200 events. I attempt to capture as passively as possible the special moments of events, like weddings, in a way that a participant might remember it. Looking back at their photos in subse-quent years it is my hope that my clients will remember not that I was there taking their photos, but recall their own memories and emotions.

HAND DRAWINGSSketching and an interest in alternative mediums has been very im-portant to my growth as a creative thinker. In some cases it has led to design solutions I otherwise would never have discovered. Sketching is the most relatable skill to architecture but charcoal and sumi-e have become a passion of mine. The importance of white space and the simple contrast of the ink has helped me think of architecture in new and unique ways.
