I’m an easy going, 26 year old, recent graduate living in Cape Town, South Africa. I recently completed my Bachelors Degree in Industrial Design, which has been my ever growing passion and has completely consumed me during my 4 years of studies. I came to Cape Town from a small coastal town in the Eastern Cape and am extremely happy and privileged to be in a city where I am constantly surrounded by people from such dierent walks of life and cultures. I'm inspired, dedicated and punctual to a point that I annoy myself. I have a love for nature and the ocean, music (that is played with instruments and not mashed together on a PC), and most of all for my girlfriend and soulmate Melissa. As a young designer, I place high priority on the sustainability of all of my work to ensure that my eect on future generations of consumerism is a positive and meaningful one. My modernist inspirations are evident in my work in the sense that I try to keep everything as simple, minimalist yet bold as possible.

Strengths Include:

-Hard working and deadline orientated.-A passion for prototyping and testing.-Highly pro-active applying design thinking to all aspects of life.

Year 2012 - 1st Year of Studies

Brief In groups, collectively design a set of wooden toys with a strong theme being applied to all the toys in the range.

Design

The final concept for our wooden toy collection came from a combination of Robot figures with a strong African aesthetic. In a group of students, our figures were designed in three sections - Head , Torso and Legs. The joining mechanism between these parts was kept consistant throughout our groups collection in order to interchange body parts and create new and dierent characters.

2013 - 2nd Year of Studies

Brief

From a selection of household furniture pieces, the student was required to select one of the options and design the piece through the design lens of an assigned iconic furniture designer.

Design:

My piece, simply titled Arm Chair, was inspired by the minimal yet functional style of Naoto Fukasawa. The chair is designed in flat pack style allowing the user to buy it in a box and assemble the chair at home. I have used contrasting woods to accentuate the chairs unique form as well as EVA closed cell padding to improve the overall comfort. The arms of the chair are their for support while sitting but where also intended to aid in the action of lifting the body to move o of the chair.

Brief

Design a stove top kettle through the lens of Italian Product design company Alessi - However the design is to have a bold African feel as if it has been deigned for an African Alessi corporate branch.

Design

My design utelises bold African-craft inpired forms along with the intricate finishing and intuitive colour placement that Alessi has become known for. The design combines elegance with a slight quirkiness and utelises materials which are indigenous to our beautiful continent.

Brief

Design and prototype a mobile gas heater in the style of any selected design movement or era.

Design

My mobile gas heater, titled Luften (meaning- to ventilate), is based in the Modern move-mentThe main inspiration for my interpretation of a modern mobile gas heater was the work of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and more specifically Falling Waters- arguably one his most iconic master pieces. The aesthetics and form of this gas heater place it in the house with the selection of Wright’s signature colour- Cherokee Red as well as the bold use of poilshed steel in contrast with raw concrete and glass.

Year

2015 - 4th Year of Studies

Brief

As part of the Btech Industrial Design curriculum, students are required to set up a small business to design, develop and sell a product in order to make a minimum of R5000 net profit. In our case, the company is White Bison, with the intent to create a successful sustainable business through the sales of the portable SOOC photo studio by the end of 2015.

Design

The studio is a lightweight, portable all-in-one solution to small/medium scale product photography. The design folds up forming a bag for transportation needs, with allocated storage spaces for the LED power source as well as the Infinity curve backdrop. The lighting and materials are ideal for smart phone photography allowing amateurs to procuce professional looking photos.

Design

SWIMS are bodyboarding swim fins designed specifically for dropknee riders. The movements and actions of the DK style mean that riders need to be able to get up into position without obstructions, as well as catch the wave with ease.

The key features focus on increased grip while riding, ecient foot pocket drainage as well as aiding with any cramping issues associated with wearing swim fins. The final design resulted from a list of design requirements generated during Ethnographic Research and supplemented by focus groups and user testing sessions . By focussing on the principles of user-centred design, SWIMS provide dropknee riders with the only swim fin they will ever need.

Details

Tomohawk Design is my first outlet for freelance design work and has allowed me to get a feel for designing for real clients. The initial idea was to create a range of multi-fuctional minimalist furniture for people in the city who have limited living space. This focus has shifted slightly due to the demand of once o pieces from clients but the core values of my products being simple, highly functional and aesthetically pleasing still remain. Trained as a generalist during my years of study, the services oered to my clients include product, furniture as well as graphic design solutions.
