01 In 1918, whenTransylvania and Romaniawerejoinedinunion,Clujwasa modern, prosperous city,in line with the spirit of thetimes.Intheperiodbetweenwars, the town continuedto prosper and becameone of the main cities inRomania. After the war, thecity went under changesprovoked by communistindustrialisation, but it kept its status as a student cityandtheacademiccentreofTransylvania.Today, the city is under fulleconomic and culturaldevelopment,andattractsalot of investment. Each year,events and conferences are held inCluj, such as theTransylvania InternationalFilm Festival, Medicalis International Congressfor Medical Students andYoung Health Professionals,Transylvania International

Guitar Festival, and so on. Hence why the new stadium,Cluj Arena and the newMultiPurpose Hall were built inCluj.For my degree project, Iproposed a new building thatwouldcontributetotheculturaldevelopmentofthecity.Itisaconference centre, placed like the other two buildingson the banks of the Somes,the river that crosses the city.The Transylvania conferencecentre is one of this series of buildings on the quay, aimingto revitalise and attract the attention of the public on the promenade.The idea was to create afluid architecture that mimicsthe movement of the water.The water and the walls faceeachother,likeadoublemirrorsystem. The hallways insidethe building allowing accessto the twoconference rooms,the foyers and the expositioncenter,areallorientedtowardsthewater.

Situated in the heart of Transylvania, in ClujNapoca,TransylvaniaEXPOisthe largest exposition centre in thecentralpartsofNorth-Eastern Romania, active forover a decade and a half, duringwhichithaswelcomedRomanian industrial fairs,expositions and many otherevents. Over the years, withthedevelopmentofthecity,the architecture of the old expositions pavilion was nolonger adapted to the needs and the size of the eventsthat it had to host. Under the SpecialStructures project, wepropose a new pavilion,with a metal and woodstructurethatwillbeinstalledin the Feroviarilor Park, and that will be able towelcome conferences andexpositions. The ExpositionCentre is modulable andinterconnectable and adapts to all possible configurationsto better suit each event.

On the night of the 20th of May 2012 anearthquakeshookthemiddle-northern part of Italy, razinghundreds ancient buildings andtransformingmanyinnercities in abandoned ruins.Where current economicalcontext - widely recognisedasaperiodofcrisis-makesreconstruction impossible,designersareinvolvedwithina fundamental debate: isit possible to think about concrete solutions, capable of overtaking a conception of mere refurbishment /restoration / reinstatementfor highly anthropizedenvironments? YAC aims to rethinkand redesign the quake-inflicted gaps left insideancient urban tissues. Thisendeavour pints to revampsuch scarred ecosystemunder cultural and economical keys, with thegoal of finding out urbanperspectives and social possibilities once undisclosed or unconceivable.
