Portfolio Assignment– Resume & References Resume Directions:
Complete a resume to include your current work site (either under employment or volunteer work). The best resumes
are the ones that might appear to you to be “plain”. I HIGHLY suggest avoiding the use of a template from Microsoft
products or WORSE, an online template.
You must build your resume using Microsoft Word without a template. It is very simple. You just have to ensure that the
tabs and spacing line up. See the sample resume for more visual cues.
Put your Contact information into your resume by inserting a Header. This will ensure that your resume and references
match in the heading.
All resumes should strive to be one page.
Should not include ANY complete sentences
Should have at the bottom CENTERED: References Available Upon Request
Reference Page Directions: with a minimum of THREE Numbered references:
Your reference page should have the same HEADER or HEADING as your Resume.
A note about who should be a reference:
1. No one in your family should be a reference for you – Mom, Dad, Step Parents, Step Siblings, and Aunts/Uncle
etc.
2. No one who is in your friend group should be a reference for you
3. Avoid using Co-Workers who are your age/status at work
4. You should ALWAYS ALWAYS ask the person if they would be reference for you AND what information they
would like you to include about them:
a. Example: If you wanted a teacher to be reference, they may not be comfortable giving you their cell
phone number (or having their cell phone number in your references)
5. Always notify your references of the jobs you are applying for so that they are prepared to take questions about
you, should someone call them.
So, who should you ask? Religious leaders who have known you a lengthy time, former teachers who noticed your
skills, family friends who are employed, current employers/teachers etc., people from an organization you’ve
volunteered for, coaches (current and former); etc. See Ms. Boyer for questions.
You should have the following information for each of your references
Mr./Mrs./Ms.
First and last name
The type of reference they are to you: Examples: Former Employer, Current Employer, Family Friend, Character Reference, Former Teacher, Current Pastor, Volunteer Coordinator,
Their Company Name
Job Title
Designate what type of phone number. Example – Cell/Home/Work

The reference HEADER should match your Resume. See above.
Resumes must be typed, NO COLOR, DO NOT USE A TEMPLATE (they don’t age well)
It’s a FOREVER document. Don’t make more work for yourself by including false information as an “assignment”
Keep your resume to one page
Write in the active voice
Focus on these three skills - Even if you have no work experience, you should have examples of
how you show these skills o communication skills
o problem solving skills o technical/math skills
Pay attention to Action Words
o Some examples to start your sentences off with: assisted, implemented, contributed, organized, planned, trained, supervised, selected, earned, presented, mediated, taught, represented
Tell the truth- Avoid Exaggeration
References – You need these, but don’t offer references without being asked- you don’t want your contact’s information
all over town
Customize the resume with keywords - a job resume is going to be different from a resume for a college
application. SPELLING/GRAMMAR
Check, check and double check and then have someone else proof it For teens: OBJECTIVES - one sentence that states why you're sending the resume to them and it's a worthwhile place
to plug some positive characteristics. Phased out practice when you get more experience under your belt. For now, it is
good.
What to include:
Challenging or relevant workplace oriented classes you’ve taken in school.
GPA 3.0 or higher (do not have to include weighted or unweighted)
Work experience if you have any. Most recent job, what you did and for which company, list of duties
Volunteer or community service. Important particularly if you have little to no work experience. For work and volunteer time, List your title or role, what you did and for which company or organization, list of
duties. Talents or skills – technology skills, band, chorus, art, software, etc.
Honors and awards (academic, athletic, community)
- Be aware that many will not know awards that we have as a school consider examples like: o Renaissance award recipient for 2016, 2017, 2018 for all A’s and B’s Honor Roll
o Commended Cane for Physical Science, September 2018, Student of the month o Breakfast of Champions award recipient, March 2019, nominated by Senior English teacher
for English BOC Month
o Lettered in Varsity Basketball Cheer, 2016, 2017, 2018 o Voted VIP in volleyball game, September 2017 against Adairsville High School
Extra-curricular activities - clubs, associations, activities outside of school, hobbies and interests. - Be specific and intentional about the things you participated in while you were involved
Formatting: - Bullet points only – NO COMPLETE SENTENCES
- Addresses: You need ALL parts of an address
- SPELL OUT: club names, titles, Class names, and any other commonly abbreviated words. - Capitalization: You need to make sure you are using TITLE case in any important headings.
- Font: 11 or 12- ALWAYS in serif or sans serif. NO FANCY FONTS – EVER! - Never include salary information
- Always have an accompanying cover letter
- Is your email address professional? o Should be an extension of your name
o Do not use the Cartersville Email address – everything will be deleted when you graduate o Try not to make it too long
- What is your professional name?
o Called by your middle name? Examples for your resume: J. Olivia Smith; Jane Olivia Smith, Olivia Smith o Two Last Names? Include them
o Called by a nickname? Don’t include it o Called by initials? JR Smith For your resume: James Robert Smith, James R. Smith, James Robert (J.R.) Smith
