As architects, the hardest task is to introduce the new into the outdated, to phase out the insufficient and transform the space to meet the evolved needs of the user groups. This project embodies that idea, evaluating how the site is used now and what the site could hold in the future for the students, teachers, and the community. The clients’ vision to create a stimulating, school for would include close to twenty classrooms, several bathrooms, a space for eating and gathering, a larger kitchen, and space for the administration and teachers. This proposed design meets and surpasses all of these goals.Working with the existing church and the concrete slab of the building behind, the classrooms were arranged around the perimeter of the site line to create a large, open space with free flowing circulationinside. This arrangement created several courtyard type spaces that were then distinguished to several different user groups on the site. In relation to the courtyards, thresholds also became an important design concept. The thresholds into the site

and the thresholds between courtyards came to signify which user groups were encouraged in each space. Lastly, introducing shading throughout the site was found to allow for more pleasant outdoor spaces to accommodate the increase in student numbers. Working with these concepts the site transformed from muted concrete classrooms into a site that reinvigorated the learning process in spaces outside of the classroom.Throughout the design, the focus was constantly directed on the different groups using the site: the three to five year-old students, the two year-olds, the teachers, and the community. Designing through these perspectives allowed the integration between existing and desired to transform into a space to benefit all. The classrooms planned for the two year-old daycare were immediately placed in the front of the site, next to the church to allow for easy drop off for the parents and creating a separated area throughout the day to cater to the mothers staying at the school. As you move through the site, the additional classrooms jump up

the thirty foot grade change and create another courtyard for the three through five year-olds to experience. To accommodate the grade change at a comfortable scale for children, stairs are incorporated throughout the site. Some stairs are purely circulation and provide the means to travel from point A to point B, while other stairs were built to become interactive and an additional play area for the students on the condensed site. To address the community needs, the existing church wing provides classroom spaces which are also close to the proposed kitchen. These indoor and outdoor spaces are meant to foster a learning experi-ence to educate the community on better nutritional habits. The proposed design will give new life to the site and desired interactive spaces for the students. The site will give a sense of renewal in the Fond-des-Blanc village and will hopefully lead to a revitalization throughout. With architecture, this design not only has the power tobetter teach children but also demonstrate to adults that a little change can create an expansive ripple.
